The choice between love and duty has never been harder.
Valis is on his way to free his father from the enemy compound, but it seems like everything is working against him.
The team sent to eliminate the last Anchor of Qos needs his help. Tavros falls ill after an accident, and if he doesn’t get help quickly he’s going to die. And the constant blizzards mean they are moving so slowly Valis is afraid they may be too late to save anyone.
With so much at stake—lives, family, his heart—one wrong move may cost Valis a price he’s not willing to pay.
His army needs him. His husband needs him more. Valis can’t afford to fail either. The race to save his family is on.
If there’s one thing Devon likes most, it’s chaos. They have a chaotic mind and a messy house, and they throw their characters into every calamitous situation possible. When they aren’t writing, they’re editing or formatting other authors’ works, building websites, creating graphics, reading, playing video games, or watching Fortnite streams on Twitch. They like to stay busy. So yes. Chaos.
OK, so I really, really love this series like you wouldn’t believe, but the cliffhangers are leaving me a tad miffed. And having NO idea when the next one is coming, is leaving me a bit on edge lol. I NEED the next book. I need to know Dare is ok and going to make it so it doesn’t destroy everyone and oh my gah. Book hangover. Valis had more than proven himself time and time again with his actions and quick on the draw thinking. It has saved his life and the lives of those around him more than a time or two. But this book tests everything he thought he knew. In the first battle they get to, after he scryed and saw the village needed help, his boundaries are pushed to the limit. Until he retreats long enough to figure out what was happening and regroup. Once he did, they won the battle, but it still did a number. While on their way to another battle, after seeing his brothers and sisters dying horribly from a Qos high priest, they encounter another battle that tests Valis’s limits. But again, he thinks on the fly and is able to gain a victory. But these battles have not come without a cost. Tav almost died on him twice, and his father that he’s trying to rescue is getting worse. And now that they are on their way to find and rescue him, will they be able to find where he is and will they make it in time to save him? You know, I love this series for so many reasons. One, it’s just that damn good and well written. Two, it’s a fantasyland that is amazing because I love all the gods and history and stuff. But most of all for me, I have loved seeing Valis grow from a scared, shy boy to a Grand Master in charge of hundreds of men and women. Men and women who have vowed to serve under him and help him whenever he needs it and no matter who they have to go against. I’ve watched him go from helpless to a very strong and powerful magician with very good fighting skills as well. He’s smart, can think on the fly, cares about his people first, especially his husband, and so much more. He has more than proven what a good man he is. And why people are willing to follow him because of it. It’s been a beautiful journey to watch. Not to say there haven’t been heartbreaking moments. Moments that we wish we could erase. But they’ve made him into the strong man he is and it’s pretty awesome. If you guys haven’t read this series, you are missing out. Really missing out.
Once again Devon Vesper has blown me away with another book in this series. Definitely a series that you cannot read as a stand-alone and must be read in the order that it was written or you will definitely be lost. This is a book that will leave you on the edge of your seat more then once. And there may be a surprise or two as well with Valis and his group of friends that I absolutely did not see coming but made total since when it happened.
In this book Valis, Tavros, and many others start their long journey to try to find Valis’ dad Darolen. Everyone knew that this journey was going to be a hard one especially since it is durning the winter time and the risk of blizzards are there but everyone’s spirits are high and ready to take out as many nests of Qos as possible.
Along the way Valis receives a vision of future events and so he decides to change the course the group is taking to try and help the ones that he sees are in danger. This of course will make their trip longer and therefore more dangerous but Valis knows that neither he or anyone traveling with him can ignore the vision and leave those in danger without help.
As things heat up and the danger in creases Valis is faced with many horrors that he did not foresee coming and Valis along with his men must learn to accept what they have to overcome what they cannot change.
Valis constantly feels the need to protect those that he considers family and will go to whatever lengths he needs to in order to do so. But sometimes things are out of our control and Valis has to learn to live with it or it will drive him crazy. He has to keep his faith or all is lost.
This book is definitely the most action packed, dangerous book so far. The things that Valis and his team face is not only life threatening but also life changing. In this book I seen Valis continue to grow as an individual and I love that. The growth that he is constantly under going is not only making him a better man but also those around him as well. I think that is definitely my favorite thing about these books. That and the love that I feel as it flies off of the pages that these individuals have for one another. Devon most definitely knows how to The the heart pumping and the reader on the edge of their seat. One more book to go in this series and I know that it will be the book of all these books. I cannot wait!! I will once again be impatiently waiting for the next book but it will be worth it when I receive it!!! Definitely a highly recommended read series!!!
Was given this galley copy for free for an open and honest review
This book is the first to show how the different factions of Avristin's army are going to work together. We have a young, and relatively inexperienced Grand Master Aesriphos, leading a hodge podge group of trained laymen and battle mages. Valis already had the loyalty of the mercenaries and the Kalutakeni, but with the sanction of the mission, he gained Aesriphos and Reliquary Aesriphos as well.
Their mission is to root out nests of Qos followers and find the lost God Jar, hopefully saving Darolen along the way. At the same time, Thyran has sent teams of Reliquary Aesriphos after the three remaining anchors of Qos. The army is traveling into the winter, and the weather continues to worsen.
After an unfortunate accident, Tavros is injured, and then suffers from an illness after being healed. This causes the momentum of the army to slow drastically, as well as lower the morale of not only Valis, but the other couples as well. Valis has also had visions of the anchor teams, and has reason to fear for one of the three.
The army has fought extremely dangerous battles, and they have proven that Valis is not infallible. The enemy is able to hone in on the army's weaknesses, and at times it seems that the Avristin army might not survive. At one point, they must divide forces, but they reunite for the denouement of the storyline. The final conflict in this book is harrowing and desperate. But at the darkest moment, our hero comes through.
Overall, this story obviously has the most action of the saga so far. It also shows the desperation felt for each other and when it seems all hope is lost. But the army survives to continue with its mission, although the remaining members of the anchor team are in turmoil. The ending is reminiscent of a dream, or maybe it was a vision?, that Valis had once upon a time. The end is near, and I cannot wait to see how it plays out.
Happy reading!
* I received an ARC of this book and I am leaving my honest review. *
I so love this series! I want to see how it all ends, but I don't want to say good-bye to Valis, Tavros, and all their friends and allies. What a conundrum! First order of business - you can not read just this book and expect to get the flavor of what is going on. Valis has come an incredibly long way since he was first found by Darolen and Kerac. He has tread a continuous path of growth and enlightenment throughout the series, and you really need to read all the books and in order for the fullest enjoyment. That said, this latest book is full of action and adventure, suspense and danger. Valis' path has never been smooth and easy, and that isn't going to change now. So many people rely on him as a leader, and fate just continues to throw obstacles in his way. I highly recommend this series!
Only one more book to go and I expect it to be quite a culmination. I can't wait!
Wow!! Simply Wow! This second book in the saga (book 8 in the series), is again a page-turner, full of action and danger magical story, a worthwhile continuation on this amazing series. With every book the plot is getting better and better and I cannot wait to see what will happen in the next one. I loved how every single character had evolved and how the relationship of Valis and Tavros is as strong as ever. Wonderful reading!! I'd recommend to read it as part of the series for a better enjoyment and understanding of this interesting plot. I received this book as an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.
Almost to the end, and this book definitely didn’t pull any punches. There were a lot of tense stressful moments as Valis, Tavros, and their army make their way on the rescue mission to save Darolen. As always, the love between these two is truly felt, even more so as we see the tender way in which Valis cares for Tavros in this installment. The battles were fierce and bloody, and of course, we were left with a cliffhanger that might make me scream, but will definitely make me buy the next book.
So Valis is off to find his Father and he's taking an army with him. Lots of action and drama in this episode. The only aspect that felt off to me was the attempt to write Valis and Tavros dirty talking to each other during the sex scenes. It felt incongruous with the rest of the writing throughout the books, but even so, it didn't spoil the adventure. Crushed that as of this date, the final book in this current trilogy arc is still not out. Hoping to see it out soon.
This is the second in the last trilogy. Valis heads out to get his father from the enemy but it seems like everything is going against him. Tavros falls sick after an accident and must receive help, or he will die. I absolutely love this series, I’m hooked! It is well written, with strong characters and has a fantastic story line. I am voluntarily leaving a review form an ARC that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
Not as engaging as the rest of the series. My main complaint was SO much time spent on Tavros’ sickness. In previous books, Valis was able to use magic to raise his core temperature, but he never thought to use his magic on Tavros in the same way? Sloppy plotting (IMO). The two battle sequences were very good though.
This fantastic, grab-you-by-the-feels, nail biting, keep-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat, and totally awesome story hit the ground running and never looked back. I was hooked from beginning to end, and can't wait to see what happens next.
This is such an adventure I hate to see it end but I’m anxious to get to it to see what happens with Valis and crew.. he’s been through so much and has come so far off to the final book..
Tavros and Valis become the Grand Master Aesriphos, youngest and strongest in history. Valis is leading an army of Aesriphos, Kalutakeni, and mercenaries, to save his father. The army has to overcome several body and soul breaking obstacles in their seemingly endless mission.
I haven’t really mentioned Tavros and Valis’ intimate time. Very slow burn which goes from hate, to friendship, to trust, and ultimately becomes an undying inferno.
I’ve felt the theme of these books is family. As you go through life you draw people you can love into your sphere of being. Giving them the importance you need in your life to ground you. In a lot of cases, this family is more real and caring than your born family. A lot of time in these books is devoted to the donning and removing of armor. When you need protection your armor gives it to you. When you are in a safe place armor isn’t needed. Family gives you that safe place.
I can’t recommend this series enough. I fell into this world created by the author.
The beginning of the end, it's really full of action and though there was a thing in the storyline which I didn't really understand the logic behind so it felt a litle off, it was very entertaining and gripping.
I loved every minute of it. As always I was drawn in from the first page, Valis and Tavros had a really hard road this time around. I love how even though Valis is powerful AF he's still not some unbeatable "hero", he still has to think thing through to use his power effectively and sometimes he fails but he never gives up. I'm so torn right now because I cannot wait to read Incursion but I'm so not ready for the series to end.
I thought the story had a nice pace and characters were likable. I loved the story. Hope others enjoy the series as much as I did. “I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book and was not required to leave a review.” Thank you for sharing your book with us.
