I loved this book so much as a child that when I married and described this book to My wife, I had to go on a hunt to find the "book about a mouse on a pirate ship". Of course, I didn't actually remember the name or author of the book I had in the early 70's Asa young child. Years later, I found it and bought it off amazon.

The story is of a mouse With dreams and a adventure gone bad and ultimately a happy ending. For a lad of 5, the illiteration, the artistry, the pirates and story were awesome. As an adult, i still love it. Imagine my surprise when the illustrations were done by someone who illustrated the lord of the rings, my favorite adult fantasy not to be discover for another 10 years....

This was probably my favorite book as a child. This should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me...

I'd forgotten about it, but one time while visiting home and spending time with me little niece, I discovered it in a stack of her other books. I was so excited that my Mom hadn't given it away at some point. My niece insisted I take it home with me, so I'm proud to have it as part of my collection now--a little worn, probably a little water-damaged (many readings at bathtime), but well-loved.

Ok, so it is not in print anymore! But, I have it memorized if you need to know anything about it.....Down by the sea where great ships sailed lived Scuttle the Mouse with the long curly tail. He love the sand the sea and the foam oh how he wished he had a permanent home.......

This was one of my favorite books as a child. Several decades ago I was gifted a copy of it by a very thoughtful friend (it is long out of print). It was a beloved possession that lived on a shelf in my bedroom until my oldest grandson visited my home for the first time. It quickly became apparent that it was going to become his beloved book and I gifted my copy to him in 2015. He loved that book almost to death. In 2018, I found another copy to replace the one on his self and brought my copy, now inscribed to and loved by my grandson, home to retire among my treasures. I am going to make a recording of me reading it to send to his teacher so I can ‘read to the class’ tomorrow for his birthday. He will have his second copy with him and I will read from his first. Thank you, Scuttle, for stowing away in my heart and giving me these sweet moments.

This was a clever and fun tale about a mouse named Scuttle trying to find a home to live in, but the giant rats keep scaring him away. He braves the high seas and sets out on an adventure, but lands on a pirate ship bound for battle. When the ship crashes into an enemy ship and sinks, Scuttle is afraid his life is about to end before it even begins, until something changes the course for him... This was a fun story (told in rhyme), with wild illustrations that I loved, and a satisfying ending. Out of print of course, but worth it if you find it. My rating - 5/5
