Now I know, him better, thought Marilyn bitterly. Blair Barron van Heiden would allow no woman to lure him in any direction. He would pursue a relationship as far as he desired, then walk away from it as though it had never been.
Holiday romances never lasted. She should have repeated those words again and again.
And if she had fallen in love with Blair -- it had been her own stupidity.
Lilian Margaret Peake was born on 25 May 1924 in London, England, UK. During the World War II, she moved to the countryside.
Her early ambition was to be a journalist, and she ended up working at various newspapers and magazines around England. She also married and started a family, and eventually she decided start to writing romance novels. She wrote over 65 romance novels for Mills & Boon from 1971 to 1996 as Lilian Peake.
I have read very little by this author and now I know why! This was entertaining only from the standpoint of watching the heroine do one stupid thing after the other. Was the word "no" too complex a term for her vocabulary. Wow...talk about a pushover.
I ended up rating this one three stars, simply for comic relief that had me rolling my eyes. I mean how can you "dis" a book that keeps your eyes rolling from one page to the next!
There was potential, but it was generally dumb. They were just too dumb, both the hero and heroine that was. The story felt very long and dragged out. I couldn’t believe I was only 30 pages in when it felt like an eternity. They bickered about everything and anything…it hardly does anything and there was no story at a certain point. Same shit, different day. Yes, they were on a cruise and it was a relaxed and doing nothingness feel but the romance was lacking. He might really be a stalker, nearly around her nearly 24/7, and there was no excitement. And while he constantly dissected her body with his eyes and is entitled to ask personal questions, when she returned them he only gets angry and patronized her for trying to learn anything of him! Wth! Are you or are you not interested? Do you or do you not want her to be interested? A bunch of idiots!
Yes, the heroine is unhappy with the hero because he has a girlfriend who wasn’t on the cruise, but he wasn’t averse to stringing her plus another young woman along. Why? Did the heroine forgot she also claimed (lied) she has a boyfriend waiting for her at home, yet still went about freely with another passenger-man and the hero? Why is the pot calling the kettle black? Half of their bickering wasn’t consistent. He probably doesn’t even know what he want or why he was mad. He should be more mad and devastated about her having a boyfriend at home than her modeling for another passenger, but then again he was adamant she was sleeping with the latter. Well, which is it, dude? Goodness, please make it make sense! And the ending wasn’t near great. Overall, not satisfying. DNR.
A cruise romance! 3,5 stars How to find a rich husband in 10 days on a cruise on Rhine!
The book is badly dated, the hero is abusive and often manhandles the heroine leaving her in bruises, and don't forget biting the heroine's head every time she asks him a personal question.
Nevertheless, I liked the book. It isn't boring - passionate fights followed by the verbal fights (and sometimes physical shoving) and insane accusations...
The heroes butt their heads from the start when Marilyn meets her mysterious next-door neighbour on a cruise. A Dutch blonde businessman who happens to be the ship's owner in disguise.
"The Sun of Summer" is the story of Marilyn and Blair.
So this whimsical tale takes place at a cruise ship. Heroine is a teacher on a vacation, hero is a mysterious man onboard. They're at loggerheads in the first half, with the hero buzzing around the heroine yet being completely rude and condescending. Second half has an amorous photographer, a fake fiance, some OW shenanigans, loads of anger, jealousy and sunburns, drama and a love confession. Smitten hero/ obliviously woe-is-me heroine.
It wasn't a 'really great' read and I don't think I have read many of Lilian Peake's books. But I rated this 4 stars because this was a better one. The holiday setting was good and I liked the verse which is still with me, so something must be good about her writing. Then too at that time, I read Mbs by the spades and I don't think I disliked any of them. Still this book had left a favorable impression.
