One of the more down to earth and realistic weight loss books I've read- to the point where I almost gave it 4 stars, rather than the 3 I settled on. The information and tips are solid and the book isn't fat-phobic. That said, the last 25% of the book are recipes, the vast majority I am way too picky to eat, let alone cook (lots of mushroom/eggplant/onions😖), so 3 stars it is. Nothing groundbreaking, no information one couldn't find on any online weight loss message board community, but the authors voices aren't grating, so better than most weight loss books.
Coming on the heels of the informative, The Mediterranean Method (you can see my review here), is The Permanent Weight Loss Plan by Janice Asher, MD and Jae Rivera, both of whom lost weight by following a version of the Mediterranean diet. To say that this is a wonderful, inspiring book for anyone contemplating weight-loss as well as the serious life-adjustments that go hand-in-hand would be an understatement.
Asher and Rivera are upbeat but pragmatic and pass this on to the reader. From reiterating how you must be kind to yourself to ignoring your evil twin who wants to tempt you with all the things you are choosing not to eat, they convey the wisdom that comes from having been there and done that. And they are honest without blame or judgement.
Studies show most people who lose weight gain it back again. These women are in the minority of those who lost weight and have kept it off. They reveal what they have learned in this book.
Much of the content deals with evaluating the relationships to our bodies and food. They write about being kind to ourselves and letting go of shame. They encourage us to feel good about ourselves, an attitude that will result in weight loss rather than the other way around. They write about goal setting, about emotional eating, and about having a mindset toward having a healthy body rather than focusing on weight loss.
This book is full of information on how we think about ourselves and food as it relates to our well being. I have read many weight loss books yet learned more from reading this one. I like that Asher and Rivera add their individual takes on the various topics. Their difference in age, occupation and pounds lost add additional insights. There are some great recipes included too.
There is good information in this book and it is a good addition to the health and wellness genre. It is good for people who want to understand why they eat and want to receive some practical strategies for losing weight and keeping it off.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
I was enjoying the book to begin with. The goal setting and visualaion is motivating but sadly nothing new. I was disappointed at the demonisation of fasting and animal fats. At that point I stopped believing. If you want to be a vegetarian, then this book is for you. With new data coming out everyday about the benefits of animal fats, ketogenic diets and autophagy, I found this book dated, and cliche.
I was looking for a book with strategies and concepts for healthy eating to promote weight loss, versus a specific eating plan, and this fit the bill nicely. The authors do suggest a plant-based, Mediterranean diet, but the focus of the book is on general tools to help the reader focus on a holistic approach to weight loss and maintenance. The steps are straightforward and practical, and I can imagine referring to this book often in the future. I look forward to trying some of the recipes that are included.
