This is one of my favorite fairytales. I have seen the Walt Disney Short of this many times and the little signet is so cute.
This is a story about finding your place in this world. There are times for people, when the people who are your tribe, your family, are very different than you. So many of us feel alienated from the people around us. We have to go searching for where we belong. It's a painful journey of being pecked on the head and thrown out of different nest until we find the people we belong to. Then, something clicks and there is belonging.
I know it wasn't written for this idea, but it's such a perfect metaphor for people in the LGBT community and so many others. I have met many people of all types and they haven't fit in with their family, or in school they never had friends. When they do find their tribe, their people, there is such joy and there can be trust issues and other things, but also loyalty.
It's one of the most powerful fairytales about the truth it tells behind the story, much like the Wizard of Oz. I think those 2 have some of the most truth. I simply love this story so much. It's like being a book nerd and finding your book community or book group to belong to. Your peeps.
Anyway, this is a book of the cartoon story of the Ugly Duckling and everyone can benefit from reading it.
There is nothing like the classics; and this one is truly one. A swan egg got mixed into a duck nest and when he was hatched the ducklings and Mama duck didn't want him around so he went in search of finding himself. When someone that looks like him found him. And he realizes who he really is.
OK, I have to admit that I had never read The Ugly Duckling before in my 40 some odd years on this earth. Gotta admit that I was really saddened by this book, but I loved it. The illustrations in this version were simple, but beautiful.
