Javier de Isusin "Marcosin piippu" (Like, 2009) on espanjalaisen sarjakuvataiteilijan albumi, jossa Vasco-niminen päähenkilö etsii kadonnutta ystäväänsä meksikolaisten zapatistien parista.
No, semmoista se joskus on.

No defrauda.

Vasco arrives at the peace camp in La Realidad, Chiapas, looking for a vanished friend. Indigenous villagers, European volunteers and the EZLN in the same frame, and Fernando Goitia in El Semanal puts the book’s work exactly: it demystifies what was left of the last great revolution of the twentieth century, with irony.
The party a Basque traveller in a solidarity camp is least able to afford rendering honestly is the solidarity crowd, and that is the one he goes after.
A game of mirrors where everyone has something to hide and nobody is who they say they are. That structure does real work here rather than being a thriller device, because the visiting European’s claim to be there for the cause is one of the things under suspicion.
The potential cap. Vasco is the only interior in the book, and the villagers are the ground his search crosses. That is the traveller’s structure. Is it enough object to know whether the series breaks out of it?
The route to settling it, and it exists. Claudio Maringelli wrote a full academic monograph on this tetralogy, Descolonizar la aventura, Astiberri 2021. His argument is that the series dismantles the adventure form rather than performing it, and this goes to 5.
Because it is a first volume and the number has decided, I shall go on to read the rest.

Nicely old fashioned in style but current in themes “The Pipe of Marcos” is a tale of a man who is looking for his lost friend in South America. The beauty of nature and the wobbling stability of politics are tangible as our gringo looks for clues in a small village filled with suspicious and frightened people. Not the most dramatic of tales, “The Pipe of Marcos” isn’t quite as sharp as one might hope, but it’s a pleasant read inviting the reader to join in on future adventures.

While neither the artwork nor the characters are as solid as the book's successor, La Isla de Nunca Jamás, this is still a solid graphic novel. Apart from telling an engaging story, it manages to make some interesting commentary, primarily stemming from the Zapatista General Marcos and his emblematic pipe.
A solid first book in what looks to be a fantastic series.
