A surprising short story that begins innocently enough but soon becomes as complex as the recipes it mentions.
Michael Turner - a top food blogger, a celebrated chef, and a bit of a snob – is devastated when he loses his top rank on the blog charts to a newcomer named Amy Williams. What infuriates him even more is that he was the first to highlight Amy’s recipe by giving it a 5 star ranking, never dreaming that she would overtake him on the charts. Now what can Michael do to win back his much-deserved no. 1 spot? With the upcoming food competition providing the perfect opportunity for a show-off, Michael begins investing day and night into getting the perfect recipe, much to the dismay of his wife who feels he must remember why he began cooking in the first place. Read the story to know what happens next.
I simply loved the first person narration of Michael. It was funny to see his thoughts begin from the irritated “How dare she?”, moving to the insecure “Is she better than me?” and the depressed “I don’t know if I can do it.” The story works much better because of the first person voice and the strong character it gives Michael.
This is a sci-fi short. (I had forgotten to expect the sci-fi!) The tale started off innocently but around the 15% mark came a revelation that made me go “Whoa!” in surprise. I loved the futuristic infusion into what would otherwise have been a regular story of rivalry and one-upmanship. The way the potential tech of the future has been balanced with a morbid depiction of what happened in the “past” of 2038 is both mind-blowing and dismaying to read.
All in all, I loved the family values, the technological innovations, the gastronomic offerings, and the characters. It is a unique story and makes a great impact.
This tale is a part of the “Human Kind” collection but also available separately on Amazon as a short. The author is a sci-fi and technofantasy author from Kyiv, Ukraine. The war has upset his writing schedule but he still lives in Kyiv and is working on his first nonfiction to bring stories from Ukraine to the world. Do support him by trying/buying his books. This story has been translated into English by Simon Geoghegan.
Caveat Emptor: Do NOT read on an empty stomach. The blurb is right for once!

In a post-apocalyptic world, real food has become a dimly remembered luxury of the past. But in spite of bland artificial stuff becoming a worldwide staple, foodies still exist. So do food-blogs where practitioners of gastronomic science display their ingenious mouth-watering creations which are invariably garnished with enticingly homey names. Unfortunately, the inevitable outcome of such efforts is a cutthroat recipe competition where the participants will do whatever it takes to ensure a win.
Exasperated by Amy Williams, a popular chef whose appealing recipes threaten his spot at the top of the charts, Michael Turner goes into overdrive trying to design a flawless award-winning dish. But even with the aid of state-of-the-culinary-art technology, is such a thing possible? Follow Michael as he goes on a quest to discover the secret to perfect cuisine.
I really enjoyed this short story from Anton Eine - his writing style is so unique and clever, and his foodie descriptions are mouthwatering at points. The book has such an original concept, exploring our relationship with food through a future chef experimenting with 3d-printed meals. Bizarre, but a really enjoyable short read that many will enjoy.
*I received a free ARC of this short story with thanks to the author. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*
The blurb isn’t lying about this story making you salivate. I suggest stocking up on eggs before reading it, because if you weren’t craving them before, you definitely will be afterwards!
The story is told in the first-person narrative of Michael Turner and set in the not-too-distant future, where food has become such a global problem that entirely synthetic solutions have had to be implemented. This is where Michael and his ilk come in – making printable recipes that recreate the tastes and textures of food-gone-by.
Michael goes on a journey of self-discovery through the short length of the tale. We meet him as he is frothing with rage, jealousy and competitiveness, as he attempts to create a competition recipe to put him back at the top of his field. During the process though, he learns a lot about being human, perfection, and what is important in life.
And he describes some absolutely mouth-watering food. Seriously, don’t go into this story hungry!
For the past five years, my name has deservedly topped the list of the most popular food bloggers. Everyone knows that I, Michael Turner, lead in the field and that my recipes are works of art married to the latest innovations in culinary science. “Plus, of course, a teaspoon of home-spun magic”, I used to joke in interviews, at a time when I could still laugh and have a joke.
