Praised by The Atlantic Monthly as "...the finest pictures ever taken of cats," Cats in the Sun is now available in a stunning paperback edition. An international favorite since its original hardcover publication in Spring 1994, this spectacular collection of enthralling, full-color photographs portrays an array of serendipitous and thoroughly charming cats against a backdrop of the beautiful Greek Isles. Combining the romantic beauty of the Mediterranean and the delightful behavior of felines, Cats in the Sun will appeal to cat lovers, travelers, and photographers alike.
For my cat obsessed 3 year old, there is nothing better than images of jumping, eating, sleeping or bathing, so this wordless collection of photographs of cats (close up or hidden by the scenery) has already provided her with hours of intense study and giggles.
We've had Cats in the Sun and The Mediterranean Cat since they were first published, and they're cherished books. But it was time to send them on to other cat lovers -- two nieces (sisters) who receive our cats books now and then as we cull books. I kept delaying sending these two Silvester collections because I wanted to look through them "one more time." These are not "cute" photos of "cute cats." Silvester reaches the profound in these photos, and it's best to peruse them in silence. As the Atlantic Monthly reviewed Cats in the Sun in 1994, "these must be the finest pictures ever taken of cats, both for the variety of the actions and for the absence of any attempt by the photographer to make the animals anything but their feline selves."
The introduction was so interesting, talking in depth about cats’ individuality, napping, street culture, etc. Some really cool facts, too: Cats were vital to protecting food stores from mice on ships back in the day and in fact, the French lost the battle of Agincourt in 1415 because they didn’t have cats like the British did, so rats gnawed through their crossbows! “If architects paid more attention to the feelings of cats, we would live in much more pleasant homes” (!!!) In terms of the pictures themselves, each one told a story and was so expressive even beyond the objective adorableness of each one. Thank you for inspiring me and Kate to retire in Greece <3
If any of you have ever read warrior cats, The ultimate edition with all the drawings of the cat characters directly copied many poses and patterns from this book, do i have proof? Nope! But if you lay them side by side some of them look the EXACT same as the pose.
Putting that aside, this is a wonderful book, especially if you need references to draw cats. Sadly i lent my copy to a kid I was babysitting and her dog chewed up one of the pages. Aint that just the way. Anyway 10/10
Excellent photographs with wonderful subjects. I would have to say my favorite is page 121. I love the composition and the hopeful cat is very humorous.
