For eons, the truth about human evolution has remained hidden. Until now...
Extinction Code
Geophysicist Jack Greer believes he may finally have found the resting place of the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs sixty-five million years ago. A few miles off the Yucatán coast, Jack and a team of scientists tow an aging drilling platform over the impact crater with the aim of securing a sample. But buried deep beneath the earth lies a shocking discovery that threatens to shatter everything we think we know about our species.
A world away, geneticist Dr. Mia Ward receives a mysterious delivery from her former boss and mentor, Alan Salzburg. In it are clues of a dire warning hidden inside the human genome, one which foretells man's very extinction.
His instructions to Mia are simple: keep the information safe and, above all, trust no one--words all the more chilling after Alan turns up dead. But who wrote the message and what does it mean? Only Jack Greer holds the answers, but can she reach him in time to save the human race?
Extinction Countdown
Dr. Jack Greer's startling discovery beneath the Gulf of Mexico proved to the world we were not alone in the universe. But when images from the Voyager One space probe reveal an alien doomsday ship hurtling toward the Earth, the human race seems marked for extinction.
As news of the approaching ship spreads panic around the globe, signs of a sinister plot begin to emerge--one that threatens to unravel the already fragile fabric of society and everything Jack and Dr. Mia Ward have fought for.
But could a mysterious signal emanating from inside Greenland's ice sheet unlock the secrets hidden within our genome and prevent humanity's destruction?
From the frozen fields of Greenland to the bustling Indian subcontinent and the cobbled streets of Rome, the race is on to stop the deadliest countdown to extinction the human race has ever known.
Extinction Crisis
With the doomsday ship only days away from impacting the Earth, humanity's demise seems all but assured. In every corner of the world, news of the impending destruction has led to chaos, looting and the collapse of the rule of law.
As the foundations of civilization crumble around them, Jack and Mia must race to find answers to perhaps the most important questions of all time. Why have the Ateans repeatedly eradicated life on our planet? And could the key to ending the cycle of extinctions be locked somewhere within the Salzburg Chromosome?
Unraveling the mystery will mean journeying deep into the heart of a perilous alien world and facing off against the very beings who created us.
The series started out as entertaining and clever, but then it devolved into spectacle and absurdity. The fact that all the characters were comprised of stereotypes and cliches didn't help. Ultimately, it had the feeling of a straight-to-video movie.
Meh. 2,5 stars really. All ingredients are there, potential first contact, gene editing, AI/consciousness, atavistic telepathy etc. But it was all too much, too many ideas, it ended up just a stew of indistinction. Fought my way through all 3, but in the end I kind of let it run by me (audiobook), not caring. Mostly waste of time, book 1 maybe not.
I was lucky enough to be sent this complete trilogy; Extinction Series, which includes Extinction Code, Extinction Countdown, and Extinction Crisis. Volume one chronicles the discovery and inspection of an alien craft buried in the ocean floor. The boarding and inspection of the alien craft have triggered an impulse from the craft that is effecting the DNA of all life on planet earth. The story goes on to present us with an introductory lesson in gene therapy, chromosomes, and DNA. Our group of scientists continues to determine the purpose of the alien craft and how to stop the impulses emanating from it. Volume two proceeds with various theories and conspiracies on the purpose and intent of the alien craft. A new discovery of an identical alien craft in space heading towards earth gets everyone’s attention. Another impulse, similar to the one from the submerged alien craft, is identified coming from deep under the ice in Greenland. Our group of scientists heads for Greenland to investigate. Volume three begins to tie loose ends together. The approaching alien craft is uppermost on everyone’s mind. The threat of mass extinction has that effect. Figuring out what the aliens’ purpose is the key to this final volume. The theory of the beginning of life on earth, along with the mass extinction events are quite interesting, if not a bit drawn out. The characters are well-developed and you get to know them quite well. The conclusion to this tale may surprise you. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This review addresses three novels. Extinction Code, Extinction Countdown, Extinction Crisis. Read them in that order, or listen to the audiobook box set. Plot. A research crew investigates the crater near the Yucatan peninsula that extinguished 75% of all life on earth. Surprise find? It isn't a meteor beneath the sea, but a space ship. We're off on a journey across the world in a race to prevent another apocalypse when we learn of another ship beneath the ice of Greenland, and yet another - earth-bound now!
Liked. It's a fascinating "what if" story, if only from the standpoint of what if we are not alone in the cosmos...thought provoking. Stretch your mind and enjoy some wild concepts. Very listenable, easy to follow, many likable characters, good guys, bad guys, and aliens!
Not so hot. Way over the head of anyone without an understanding of genetics - gets pretty deep into science that might make the nerds among us happy, but others will stare across the room and mutter, "Huh?"
Extinction Series is a good story, well worth a credit for SciFi fans. No sex, no objectionable language, no issues with narration or production.
Written by James D. Prescott, narrated by Gary Tiedemann, about 25 hours of listening, released in June 2019 - self-published.
A friendly reader note, but a non-spoiler: Be aware that if you begin Mr. Prescott's FIRST book of his Extinction trilogy that I suspect you will be hooked on reading the other two that follow, since the plot line and most major characters (at least those not killed off earlier) continue through all three books.
That said, I am personally glad that I encountered these for I found some of the ideas in it original and appreciated the several plot twists that unfolded throughout these pages.
Without wishing to spoil anything for new readers, let me just tempt you with this: A scientific team is attempting to go down into the crater left in the Gulf of Mexico by the 65-million year old asteroid strike that precipitated not only the end of the dinosaurs, but over 90% of all life on the planet, including the oceans. HOWEVER, when a submersible discovers that what lies below is NOT rock but, rather, some kind of metal, both one's imagination and the story-line are off and running.
One of the more original -- and charming characters -- is a "female" AI who is constantly evolving throughout the three books and, frankly, is easily one of the more likable "persons" you'll encounter there.
The Author gets nods of approval for putting a lot of science into this SciFi series. In fact, the BEST part of these books, was the tail end where he offers scientific insights into things he wove throughout the stories. But, it’s the stories that kept this series from getting 4-stars — The Author maintains several different, but parallel and sometimes converging stories — and frankly, it’s difficult for The Reader to keep it all straight. The final nail in the coffin, though, was the somewhat abrupt ending — it was like The Author just severed the tale, thinking (and being 100% right!) that maybe he’d written enough, and things had to come to an end. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t a clean ending, and the angles were not necessarily well written.
Very interesting twist of known facts into suspensive and thrilling ride into saving the human race. Well written, story in each of the books speeds up nicely and gives plenty of action. However, the endings in each book are somewhat sudden and too fast. Had a feeling I sometimes get with movies that evidently ran out of production money = "lets hurry up and wrap it up". The ends do not do justice to the whole story and the way of storytelling. That being said, I will definitely read another Prescott's book, as I like his ideas and his style.
After reading the glowing reviews around here I had high expectations. The idea is definitely captivating but where this book fails is in the execution. A lot of things don't make much sense and not much happens. If anything it feels stale, there's a lot of description, lots of details of things that don't really matter at all in the end. The writing style does not salvage the contents either, it's dry with almost no wit. So in nutshell it was boring.
I only read the first book in the series and won't be reading the rest.
Audible:I loved this series. The fast pace and character dialogue was exciting! The history of human evolution is on the brink of discovery. The things found deep in the earth point to E.T. probablilties. Smart genes and a human like robot play their part. The bad guys are everywhere, sometimes people change sides. It is all up in the air until the end. Gary Tiedermann was an excellent narrator. While the author and I view the world from different perspectives, I found this a fantastic series to read. Well developed characters were interesting and compelling as well as an exciting story with many twists and turns. I was very intrigued throughout the entire story and enjoyed the technical aspects of the story as well. Good series!
This series changed the way that I perceive the universe(s). I have always been fascinated by the path that humanity is taking which seems to be directed forwards the stars and this series shows that our imaginations know no limits further supporting my belief that sooner or later we will hopeful travel among the stars.
This event is pursued throughout 3 volumes, with well-honed characters, both villains and heroes, and with an exciting pace to the plot. The fictional elements are based on scientific concepts, enhancing the believability of the story.
This is a fascinating adventure into possibilities suggested by truth mixed with fantasy. Sometimes a bit too much depth but still intriguing enough to maintain your attention. All in all a really good read.
I got this on Kindle Unlimited. I read it. Then bought the audiobook and listened to it. The whole series gave me much pause for thought. Not your standard SF story. Great story.
Many things going on at once but wonderfully orchestrated. I’ll take a break from genetics and conspiracy for a little while to catch up on my Bible studies, but I’ll be back soon. Thanks for the exciting ride.
An awful mishmash of a book. Xenoarchaeology means conspiracy theory with thriller elements, human/Android love, moving between worlds. In the end we don’t actually progress very far at all. I just wanted it all to finish. Two days later I could scarcely remember the ending.
Excellent plot development! Great characters. I couldn’t put it down & read the whole series in 3 days. Exceptional science & I learned a lot of actual science. An excellent series. If I could give it another star I would.
This starts out almost like an archeological adventure, but quickly turns into an apocalyptic sci-fi. It is pretty fast paced and very suspenseful. The characters är well written, and the science is believable. This was a very good read.
Fascinating concepts of evolution and extinction of the human species, alien interactions, and conspiracies! Raced through the series on audio very quickly.
More of a Science read, than Science Fiction. Was expecting more action but I’m half way through book 2; no aliens have arrived, and I’ve lost interest.
This was great series... Well thought out. I really enjoyed reading it. Some of the science was wah over my head, but th hat makes for interesting reading..
