Alan Emlyn Williams was a journalist and foreign correspondent, reporting from notable hotspots worldwide including Hungary in 1956, Algeria, Vietnam and Northern Ireland. In 1962 he started writing thrillers which brought him the accolade "the natural heir to Ian Fleming" but it was his well-researched spy stories such as The Beria Papers and Gentleman Traitor (which featured real life traitor Kim Philby) which brought him international success.

I placed Little Teammate on my "Children's" shelf, but I could have just as well placed it on my parenting shelf, or coaching shelf, or baseball shelf, or "winning" shelf. Alan Williams delivers a simple mantra parents would do well to memorize and implement. I have coached five sons in baseball, coached Jr. High and JV Basketball, and watched a daughter play competitive soccer though college. And I have witnessed too many parents (myself included at times) go overboard in their efforts to "bring out the best" in their student athlete. Without preaching or moralizing, Williams points us to a better way. The illustrations by Stephen Marchesi are stellar too.

I love this story! It's about the little teammate getting his father's approval when he wins the game... but it's ALSO about him getting his father's approval when he LOSES the game. A very nice lesson/reminder that winning is nice, but good sportsmanship is the best! After all, in round robin elimination, only one team gets to win EVERY game; everyone else will lose at least once.

Recommended for little teammates who may need a little encouragement!

My children absolutely adore this book. Reading literature is so important to the development of a child's mind, and I cannot think of thing I would rather do then sit down to read to them in the evenings. Imagination and growth are so vital in those so young.
