Eric Young is the first child android to be trialled in society, but he doesn’t know that. He does know that he’s just moved to Ashland from London, so it’s important that he makes new friends. Not just any friends, but the right kind – the kind that would be interested in skateboarding and the new Slick trainers his Uncle Martin sends him. He’s already growing his social media presence, but he knows it’s important to make friends in the real world too.
Danny Lazio doesn’t have any friends, but he doesn’t care about that. He would rather not be friends with someone like Eric, who’s had seemingly everything handed to him. But when Eric takes an interest in Land X, Danny’s favourite game, Danny thinks he might have found a real friend… if he can figure out the mystery behind Eric’s sudden disappearances and strange lifestyle. As their friendship grows it becomes harder to ignore the weird events that happen around Eric, from weekly “dentist” appointments to inexplicable medical mishaps. But uncovering the truth is an act that might cost them both, as powerful forces soon move in around them.
The daughter of South American parents, Monica Meira Vaughan grew up in Spain before moving to London at the age of five where she learnt English by watching Sesame Street and reading every Roald Dahl book she could get her hands on.
On leaving school, and after a brief stint in public relations, Monica decided to train as a primary school teacher. She has spent the last eight years working in special needs, mostly with children with emotional and behavioural difficulties.
Monica likes to start writing after midnight and it has been, until recently, her secret hobby. On the weekends she likes to try to catch up on her sleep.
I liked the characters and the ending was good but it didn't have much plot. I liked slicks perspective it was so unique. I think they could have done a lot more at the end to save slick, they took his Id chip but couldn't get his body back, so they uploaded him into a game. I think this book needs a sequel, the story has potential for more, can they find slick another body? Is the company going to take over the world with robots?? I'd like another book.

Great book. Some interesting ideas. Struggled to get in to it to start off with so may not recommend for a relucatant reader, but realised how essential it was to the story about a third of the way through. Would probably recommend to year 4 + robot/technology/digital interested kids. So gripping by the end!
Recommended by my daughter. Slick embodied many traits that found in children with ASD and this can be a good book to use to introduce the subject. Ending is bitter sweet.
A really interesting story about an AI that is more than just a robot. The friendships in the book are so wholesome and you can see how this AI/boy slowly learns and figures out his surroundings with the help of his new friends/family.
It’s a little younger than I usually read, but I keep coming back to it- I just can’t get over how brilliantly creepy the whole thing is. Once you reach the big twist, the entire book reads differently. Properly chilling.

As a teacher, I read this for school and as part of the UKLA Book Awards Shortlist. Very easy read, couldn't put it down but I was a little disappointed by the ending
So intriguing. Discovering your friend is a robot. Discovering you are in fact a robot. A picture of our world today and a possible, quite scary, place we could well end up.
