Reviving the Commander

Rate this book
Crowns Legacy, Book One

She isn’t looking to capture the Commander’s grieving heart.

Opal Whilstead knows she has a reputation: a reputation as a bright, giving, upright woman—smiling and laughing her way through hopeless spinsterhood. It's been so long since she's had serious feelings for a man, but now she finds herself taken with the Commander Exemplar of Diachona's army.

And she regrets it.

Not only is the Exemplar a widower still longing for his wife, but he's the father of the reigning king. Even if a man of such prestige could find love again, he'd be unlikely to search for it among the kingdom's old maids. Besides, Opal dreads being found, due to a grievous secret she carries…

Enjoy this gentle, later-in-life romance from another time, in a fictional world.

Sweet story of love and second chances.

Opal longs for marriage but believes it is not likely given her age. She spends her time serving to help fill the hole in her heart. Throughout the book Opal shows admirable strength, courage and compassion.

After losing his wife, Staid Alexander has a hard time moving on. When his son decides on Opal for a playmate, Alexander soon becomes interested.

This story has wonderful themes of redemption, compassion, and healing.

Favorite quote: “You’ll have to decide what’s more important to you at this point. Love or fear.”

*I received a free copy of this book, with thanks to the author. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

This is a sweet, lovely mature romance, which avoids the clichés and tired, old tropes you get from some clean fantasy novels featuring ‘bright young things’ finding love for the first time.

Opal and Staid are both older, wiser and have already dealt with plenty of challenges in their – very different – lives. There is no silly drama or game-playing between them; instead we see genuine emotional depth and some of the realities of adding a new family member to an existing circle that has suffered a traumatic loss.

I got a little bit of a The Sound of Music vibe from the story: a widowed, noble father of six meets a gentle, good-hearted, virgin spinster, and the children both challenge their relationship and also help to spark it.

The writing is warm, witty and well-crafted and despite the fictional historical kingdom that forms the setting, the characters are real and believable.

I would definitely recommend this book to any gentle romance fans looking for a story about second chances at love, and historical blended-family romance.

She realized that in the circles she moved in, she was known as Opal, the bright and ever cheerful: visiting hospital patients, elderly citizens, and children in orphanages. Opal, the ever present and dependable: preparing and delivering meals to families when they fell on hard times. And (more quietly) Opal, the ever overlooked and hopeless spinster: attending church and social functions without a spouse or a beau. For, people surmised in whispers, wasn’t it a sign of some hopeless issue if a woman so agreeable and upstanding had never been able to land herself a husband? Ah, others replied in equally whispery tones, but not every woman had want or need of a husband, had she? Surely, if one so bright and agreeable and upstanding as Opal Whilstead hadn’t entered the marriage estate by now, then spinsterhood must be her preference. Yes?

Well I really enjoyed this one.

Romance isn't something I usually choose to read, but I was drawn to this story because it featured two people in their later years, having a second chance at love, which makes a refreshing change from stories featuring young love.

I haven't read any of the author's other books, and that had no impact on my enjoyment of the story. This can easily be read as a stand-alone.

The characters are well-drawn, and the love between Staid and his children is real and deep. I also like the slow way in which he and Opal came to love each other. The writer has fully mastered 'show, not tell', allowing the characters to be themselves and in such a way discover their shared values of service and loyalty.

I also found the fictional setting intriguing. The setting felt real, sketched in but not dominating the narrative.

Highly recommended.

Reviving The Commander by Nadine C Keels is a Christian romance and the first in the Crowns Legacy series.
The book revolves around the theme of love in later life. You are never too old to fall in love. We must not exclude ourselves from life when God’s not finished with us. If we are still breathing then God has a plan for our lives. There are no retirement plans in God’s kingdom.
There is a wonderful family atmosphere throughout the novel. Family is important from the youngest to the oldest member. There were some delightful interactions between two year old Joshua and Miss Opal.
Within the novel the reader witnesses an awakening of a character. It is beautiful to see the blossoming from a dormant state.
Reviving The Commander was a great start to a new series.

A panoramic view of a sunrise over rocky hills, with The Movement of Crowns Series boxed set sitting on one hill, and a castle on another hill in the distance

Well! It wasn't in my original plan to write multiple spin-off series from the Movement of Crowns at the same time. But characters make demands that authors must follow. 😉

Reviving the Commander, first in the Crowns Legacy series, picks up about a year after the Movement of Crowns series ends.

A panoramic view of a sunrise over green, rocky hills, with Reviving the Commander sitting on a hill and a castle in the distance

Eubeltic Descent, first in the Eubeltic Realm series, picks up more than a century after the Movement of Crowns series ends.

A panoramic view of a sunset over green, rocky hills, with Eubeltic Descent sitting on a hill and a castle in the distance

While it isn't necessary to read the different series in the order of their chronological histories, it is best to read the books within each series in their numbered order.

There's also Hope Beyond, a series of tales with both distant and close ties to the Eubeltic Realm. These stories can be enjoyed on their own or as companions to the various Eubeltic series. The first one I wrote is Eminence .

Picture the most cliché fantasy heroine. Unnaturally beautiful, young, innocent, slightly naïve, and abnormally prone to forcing second-hand embarrassment on readers. Now, (if you're like me) insert an eye roll. Then change the picture to someone who is still beautiful, but has a few wrinkles around her eyes and lines around her mouth from years of smiling, with a touch of gray in her hair. She's not a teenager, she's not quite as innocent as she first appears, and while she is kind to everyone, she is not naïve. But best of all, she doesn't give readers second-hand embarrassment. And there you have Opal Whilstead.

Honestly Opal was my absolute favorite part of this book. As I've already mentioned, she defied so many stereotypes for this genre of heroine, and she did so quite well. It was refreshing to have this new perspective, and definitely added a lot to the story. The best part about this, though, is that she didn't sit aside and wait for marriage. She served her family, volunteered at the orphanage, participated in community events, and overall had a very full life. Opal is a phenomenal role model of sorts - one that I would love to be more like.

Continuing on my Opal rant (and revealing the communication major in me), I was so impressed with her interpersonal communication skills. She meaningfully engaged with everyone from toddlers to royalty to military rejects. Even with Staid she kept her graceful communication style and effectively avoided making me cringe from any awkward interactions.

Moving on, Staid was great, Joshua was adorable, and the story was engaging. I really only have two complaints - first, it was too short. I say that about every book that I enjoy and is under four hundred pages, so it may or may not be a valid comment? The second complaint is just that there were a few sections where the dialogue got a bit confusing and I wasn't quite sure what the speaker was saying. But this only happened two or three times, so it's not a huge deal. Overall it was a very enjoyable read!

I received a copy of this book from the author for the purpose of this review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

A second chance at love merges with an engaging cast of fictitious royals in a new series.

Author Nadine C. Keels uses older characters as the focus of Reviving the Commander, which serves as the first installment of the Crowns Legacy series.

From the beginning, the story captures our imaginations with a breathtaking wedding between a young king and his bride. However, the king’s father, Staid Alexander, also deserves attention. Having lost the love of his life after she died in childbirth, he’s left with six children ranging from his now-grown son recently crowned to a toddler.

Opal Whilstead may radiate happiness and good cheer, but she has a growing attraction to the king’s father. A chance encounter sparks his interest, which opens the door to a closer friendship.

Ultimately, Opal and Staid must determine whether love or fear is more important. Whether it is fear of loss or a secret being revealed, does it outweigh the promise of love?

I found this to be a delightful story filled with humorous twists. It’s rare to find a romance featuring older characters, so kudos to the author for recognizing that love occurs at all ages.

Reviving the Commander delivers a speedy read packed with all of the right ingredients to kick off a new series. ~ Amy for Novels Alive

Reviving the Commander had been on my to-read list for a while. I was intrigued by it being a romance involving a couple beyond their 20s or 30s. It was also the first book I've read by Nadine Keels.

I very much enjoyed this relatively short Christian romance. The writing was good, the story held my interest, and the characters were easy to root for. (Staid is hardly an old man, and as a successful leader and devoted father, he's appealing. Opal is clear-headed, plainspoken, and loving, and you want her to find happiness - finally - with Staid.)

I'm not a big fan of fantasy, but this style of historical fantasy is something that I can enjoy. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.

This book was great! I found a new author to follow 😊

Reviving the Commander is the first book in Nadine C. Keels Crown Legacy Series, and wow what a start. From the first page, Nadine drew me into the wonderful community of Diachona, it really does feel like you become a part of the royal family. The Commander Exemplar (Staid) is a father and widower, whom we see some of his struggle with losing his wife and continuing to raise his family. We also see his joy, happiness and strength found with his remaining children and future wife. One of my favorite quotes by him in the book gives great depth into his character:

“Being a soldier is about protecting and preserving vital principles we live by and that our land thrives on. But behind our principles are people. If not for the human lives and their well-being to safeguard, then our principles, our laws, our symbols- they would all be worthless. People are what matter.” -Pg. 52.

Throughout the whole book, he exemplifies a man who fully trusts that God has all things under control (not to say that he doesn’t struggle). Opal is the female lead in this book, and she is also developed very well. Nadine C. Keels feeds us little bits of Opal’s strengths and weaknesses in every page. With some surprising twists that I honestly didn’t expect. Opal really shows a good deal of strength and happiness about her circumstances that is wonderful to see. I truly loved her interactions with the royal family and the soldiers that she talks to. It was as if I could imagine her standing across the room and see her expressions; that’s how well she is described.

This story’s premise was very unique in that it deals with a middle-aged couple (not a whole lot of books are written about that age demographic), a fantasy country that felt like a great big community, and for the patriotic feel, the whole of Diachona’s population displayed (I wish we saw more of that in real life). I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars for all the above and because it left me anticipating reading the next book in the series.

I enjoyed this wonderful story. It had everything I like in a book -- strong characters, a delicious setting, royalty, pomp and circumstances, and of course, a burgeoning love between two people.

A strength of this book was the mature characters. Opal and Staid are 'past their prime' or are they? You're never too old to fall in love, and experience all the sweetness of something new. I loved the formality of the language in this book as well, as the scrumptious details. The political intrigue, subtle, sets the tones for what I am sure are other books in the series.

I loved everything about this book!

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Reviving the Commander by Nadine C. Keels is a beautiful book about finding love not only with another person but with yourself as well.
Can Opal fill the hole in the Commander's heart? Can the Commander get Opal to see how worthy she is?
Opal Whilstead
Opal Whilstead is our female lead character, and she is a great character. She has some significant flaws going for her and a desire to have a family while not divulging why she doesn't have one. Opal doesn't seem to mind living the life of a spinster even if she wants a husband and a family. I love a lot of things about her, and a lot of them are spoilers so that I won't say, but Opal is an excellent character that despite what she can't do Opal does things that fulfill her in a way that other items do to some women back in this period.
Reviving the Commander CRCommander Alexander
Commander Exemplar Staid Alexander is the father to the new King of their country because his wife was the Queen. He has holed himself away for two years because of a fear of his own that I can't disclose (spoilers again), but he does change throughout the novel. Staid is a great father to all of his kids and wants what is best for them. He is another excellent character that grows with the book, and Staid is better with Opal by his side.
Five Stars
Ms. Keels has another excellent book on her hands with this one. I love Reviving the Commander by Nadine C. Keels; I couldn't put it down even though I didn't want to read it to fast. On that note, it's getting a five-star rating, and I'm recommending it to anyone that loves historical romances that have some royalty.

Eubeltic Realm is made up of 2 nations: Diachona & Munda.
Topaz, Diachona. The royal wedding & the sacred vows just took place between King Alexander Matthias (son, Diachona, Sovereign Regnant of Munda) & Queen Vale Elisabetha Hanna (Diachona).
Commander Exemplar Governor Staid Alexander Matthias (Diachona's army, widower, father of 6, Diachona’s National Council member) watched from 1-side.
Constance (Staid’s wife, mother, former Queen of Diachona, Sovereign Regnant of Munda) had died giving birth.

Elder Whilstead (father, National Council member) & Dowager Queen Grace (living mother, Grandmamma) were very proud.
Opal Whilstead (aid society group) & Rebecca (Opal’s BFF) watched from the other side.
Staid/ Constance’s family members consisted of: Laurel (wife, eldest daughter/sister), (husband, lawyer), Josephine “Josie” (17, daughter/sister), Ruby (15, daughter/sister), Eunice (daughter/sister), & Prince Joshua (son/brother). Bethany is Joshua’s nanny.
Later, Princess Laurel gave birth to Junia (daughter).
Lady Naona Greenly (wife, chemist, Diachona’s chief apothecary) & Chieftain Philip Greenly (Naona’s husband, National Council member) came to see the newborn.

2 yrs. later. Topaz’s palace ballroom. Opal was invited to attend the gala event.
Josephine & Ruby delivered a medley of dramatic recitations as a part of the princesses’ yearly scholastic requirements.
Opal & Staid passed out the books to young boarders in the school’s library. Their job was to shelve them in numerical order.

What medal was Opal awarded?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.

A very awesome book cover, & proper great font & writing style. A very well written Historical Romance book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great Romance movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. It wasn’t as exciting as I hoped so I will only rate it at 4/5 stars.

Ever read a book and feel called out? Didn't expect to feel that way with this one, but I did. I was thinking it would be this sweet little second chance love story between two older protagonists. But it was more complex because of them being older.

I'm not middle age yet, but I am mid thirties and single. I loved reading about a lady who finds love later in life, as I hope that may happen for me. But I did not expect to connect to Opal on more than just that level. This lady has been through it. A lot of it. And her choice to be happy, and yet still have secret bitterness and a low opinion of herself and her worthiness for real love...hit hard. So hard in fact, that I felt kinda scooped out and raw when I closed my kindle.

So, reviewing this book is rather hard. Because it was so good. But it brought some things to my attention that I really needed to hear. (and didn't wanna!) Mostly about self forgiveness, and giving others a chance to see you as you are. My gosh, I was not expecting a life lesson from this book. But I got it, and I'm still chewing on it, trying to decide how to feel.

The book is gorgeous. It's got a great moral to it, and some very personal things from characters who could easily be real people. That said, there are some trigger warnings for this book. They are mild to moderate spoilers however, so read at your own risk:

Content wise there is no violence, there are hints at bullying in the past for being husbandless/childless on our heroine's side. There is no language. There is no sensuality besides kisses, which are mild and not graphically described. There is but it is not detailed at all, just the basic facts. They do openly speak of women's monthlies and fertility, so if that bothers you, it's in there. Very respectfully handled though. Not gross at all. One of the issues dealt with is also from the widowed father of six children courting a new woman and dealing with that new dynamic. Basically there is a lot in here that could trigger people with different life experiences so be careful and aware, but know that everything is handled sweetly, truthfully, and with a deft compassionate hand.

Will a widower and a spinster give love a chance?

It's been awhile since my last jaunt to Diachona so I was pleased to find out that Nadine C. Keels had started a sequel series called Crowns Legacy. I started Reviving The Commander with great gusto and then a little way in I realized that one of the main characters was the surviving spouse of one of my old friends from the previous series. That set me back a little bit, needless to say. But after a few minutes of thinking I forged on ahead, and, I can say that I'm very glad I did. It's a wonderful story!

I think that the sadness on my part at the loss of that particular character actually allowed me to connect even more with Reviving The Commander. I was able to understand the grief a little bit more and the reluctance to try romance again. Which brings me to why I enjoyed this story so much. I loved how Nadine C. Keels took the pain, loss, and mistakes of the past and wove them into a story of hope and second chances. I'm also a big fan of starting out the Crowns Legacy series with slightly older characters. Most fantasy books feature young romance so it was nice to see a tale where romance is possible after 35. Yes, the hero has adult children in addition to his adorable toddler son, who, by the way, I totally fell in love with.

The technical aspects of Reviving The Commander were very well done. Nadine C. Keels has a real knack for worldbuilding without becoming bogged down in minutiae. Her realms are diverse, not in creatures but in people, which makes a much more interesting world. The story kept me engaged, invested in how things would turn out, and was well written. I can't wait to read book two in the Crowns Legacy series!

*This book was sent to me for review purposes by the author. All opinions are my own.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The more time I spend in Keels’ fictional world, the more I love it. Her stories stand out because they’re so unique. The genre that they’re in is inspirational historical fantasy. It’s a unique mesh of genres that allows for a lot of creative freedom. This is not specifically a Christian, historical or fantasy story so Keels’ is able to totally create her own world and isn’t bound to the typical “rules” or expectations one might have when writing in those genres. I feel like this allows for a wide variety of readers to enjoy her books.

Our two main characters are Opal Whilstead and Staid (pronounced stayed) Alexander. I really loved both of them. If you read any of my book reviews, you’ll know that I place a ton of importance on character depth. Detailed characters, or lack thereof, can make or break a story for me. Depth is not an issue here because both of the main characters are very well rounded. They have their wonderful qualities but they also have flaws and issues that they’re dealing with. A bonus is that they’re both middle aged. I find, at least in the books I read, that that’s not typically common for romance novels and it was a refreshing change of pace.

This book is appropriate for preteens and up. As with Eubeltic Descent, I really recommend Reviving the Commander for lovers of clean romance, fantasy and history.

Opal Whilstead is cheerful with others and regularly participates in charitable endeavors with the ladies of society. But she worries about spending her life as a spinster. Commander Exemplar Governor Staid Alexander has preoccupied himself with watching his children grow up and his oldest son get married, along with his official duties. But he still grieves over the loss of his wife Queen Constance.
Neither expects their loneliness to end.
One evening, a chance encounter unearths their repressed feelings. One day, Opal is invited to accompany Staid during his tour of the military. As they get to know each other more, Staid begins to think he can start a new chapter in his life. Meanwhile, Opal keeps discouraging herself from hoping for more than friendship with him. Toward the end of the tour, Opal and Staid realize they have found more than a companion in each other.
However, not everyone approves of the relationship between Opal and Staid. The greatest threat to their romance is the bitterness, jealousy, and resentment from those who disapprove of having a commoner enter the exclusive circle of nobility.
Reviving the Commander shows that one can find true love without compromising his or her principles. Opal and Staid had opportunities to have a relationship with anyone but chose to wait for someone with whom they felt comfortable sharing their lives. As the title suggests, Staid is the one needing help to enjoy life again, for Opal overcame her grief by giving and receiving love through charitable endeavors, and by maintaining a positive attitude.

Five stars

Prose: 5/5
Romance: 5/5
Characters: 5/5
Plot: 4/5
Prose:

Nothing much to say in this category, I liked the simple yet detailed style and I"m unsure how to describe it. I felt drawn into the story and there wasn't a time where I was shocked out because of bad prose.
Romance:
Lovely! I liked the non-traditional storyline of an older couple who aren't all swept up in romance and such. I also liked the few plot twists with Opal- although I do miss Constance!
Characters:
All lovely- Opal is the only super-important new one (other than the children- and we see some of them at the end of the Movement of Crowns series)
Plot:
Very good, fairly slow with not as much politics as some of the previous books, but still quite enjoyable.
Overall:
I loved the new story for Alexandar- and it was a good follow-up to the Movement of Crowns series. I'd definitely say that you could read it as a stand-alone, but there was so much more depth for me, having previously read the other series.
Content:
Not really much to say here- one kiss between an engaged couple. Mentions of a couple being married and sharing a room. Mentions of being pregnant/having a child.

Thank you to the author for giving me a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review

This was a very sweet and lovely short read. I don't often read romance, but this was a sweet book that left me feeling all warm inside.
I have not read the rest of the series, but that didn't hinder me from understanding and enjoying this short story. This book was easily read as a stand-alone, but I am definitely interested in reading the rest of the series.
The writing was beautiful, understandable and descriptive, there wasn't even a hint of bad prose. The character were well written and the characterization was smooth and believable. I loved how the book didn't just completely revolve around Opal and Staid as if the world had stopped just to watch them get to know each other. When they interacted with different characters it felt important and just as when Opal and Staid interacted as they were involving themselves in each others worlds.
A beautifully written romance that I fully enjoyed.

I really did enjoy this sweet, heartfelt romance. It was different from your typical romance novel: the heroine wasn’t a young, gorgeous girl trying to decide which of the multiple handsome, eligible young men she should choose to dance with at the next ball (not that those are horrible stories, but…). Opal is a woman of middle years who has pretty much given up on finding love and instead spends her time serving others. She is more inspiring than I imagined she would be. And more complex.

We all know that there will be a happy ending for Opal and Staid, but there was enough of a twist in the story to give the reader a desire to know just how obstacles will be overcome to reach that joyful conclusion. I can easily give Reviving the Commander 3.5 out of 5 stars. It was a light read with heavy moments that I would recommend to fans of historical romance.

Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this novel for review purposes. I was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are my very own! 🙂

Reviving the Comander, by Nadine Keels is an excellent book. I have to admit that I was reluctant to read this book after the first chapter. I felt like it was not going to be something I enjoyed. I even put it down for over a week. Keep reading! The story is enchanting and the characters interesting. I really enjoyed how the development of the characters kept evolving throughout the story. It was like a rose blooming and then the petals dropping one by one to get to the center essence of the personality.
If you like fairy tales with wonderful surprise endings and interesting character you will love reading this book.

Such a special and unique love story!
This is the story of Opal Whilstead. A woman that is long passed the age for marriage. But her heart still moves for someone. Although, he's someone she could never have.
This was such a beautiful and moving story! I loved it thoroughly. The romance was so sweet and tender. The plot developed coherently and smoothly.
Opal is such a wonderful woman! She's cheerful and has such a tender and true heart and nature. Also, she's funny, strong and resilient.
I loved the writing style! It was so poetic and well-constructed sentences. Lovely book!

I enjoyed this book. "Reviving the Commander" is a Historical Romance book and the first of Crown Legacy series.

It is a book about the love of two in their middle-ages. The male character, Commander Exemplar Staid is a widower, and even if he struggles with losing his wife, he continues to raise his children, and he puts his trust in God because He know God is in control. Opal, the female character in this book, is a surprise for me. You see her strength, and after that, you discover that even so, she has also her struggle and thinks that she doesn't deserve to be loved.
But when God has a plan for you, you cannot fight against it. He knows what is best for you. This is what was happen with these two.

I loved the storyline. There are also those surprising moments you've never thought about, and I like that.

I can't wait to read the second book of this series. Hope you also enjoy it.

I throughly enjoyed this story; it was beautiful! I love the conversations between Opal and Staid, and I love how the author wove in the faith element. I also like how the author handled the dinner scene with Staid's kids. She didn't gloss over the kids feelings just to create a feel-good romance. She also didn't make the heroine perfect. Opal had flaws that she needed to tackle so she could move forward with her life.

A feel-good story.
This story about love in later life was just charming. Opal and Staid were grand characters and reading about their romance were really interesting and somewhat realistic. The interactions between the characters were so enjoyable. Ms. Keels is a new author for me, but I will be looking for other work by her. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

I enjoyed this quick read of romance blooming later in life.

Opal is a wonderful character full of life but doesn’t really believe she will find love. But then the young prince curls up on her lap and she finds a glimpse of it there.

Then Staid isn’t sure if he wants romance again, at least he doesn’t want it thrown at him and his eyes begin to open to Opal.

A nice read and a very quick one at that.

I loved this book. Being back in the kingdom created by this author was wonderful. Finding out how things are continuing was super. The love story between Opal and the Commander is very well done. The interweaving of faith is also quite well done. Highly recommend this wonderful story. I received an advance reader copy from the author. Opinions are my own.

This story was both enchanting and refreshing to read. The characters are likable and relatable with character flaws as we all have. They are also a slightly older generation who have a second chance to love someone. Great character development and a wonderful setting.
