It’s almost field day, and Webster is worried. He can’t run fast, he trips on the jump rope, and his Frisbee always lands in a tree. How will he help his class get the medal? Webster is sure that God forgot to make anything special about him. Join Webster and his class as the whistle blows and he discovers a few God-given skills that just might save field day. This whimsical, illustrated picture book reminds young readers that they were each wonderfully made by God!

What's So Wonderful About Webster? is aimed at elementary aged students. This is a large book, measuring about 8 by 11 inches with a dust jacket and nice heavy pages. The words are dark and easy to read and the illustrations by Daniel Fernandez are bright, cheerful and fun. Between the story and the high quality of the physical book, What's So Wonderful About Webster? is a great book for kids who are reading on their own or to be read with an adult. This book also has the Parent Connection page with the Bible verses to read along with this story and questions to ask for a good discussion. This book would also be fun to read with a group of children for church class type setting as a reminder that we are all special and have unique gifts.
I received this book from BH Kids publishing group. All opinions in this review are my own.
WHAT'S SO WONDERFUL ABOUT WEBSTER?, a 2019 picture book from B & H Kids, written by authors and brothers, Stephen and Alex Kendrick; and illustrated by Daniel Fernandez; takes its reader on a "School Field Day" with fourth grader Webster.
Throughout the 29 pages of conversation (third-person viewpoint), Webster is characterized as the kid who needs encouragement about everything, it seems. But, when he receives a biblical answer from Dad and Mom, Webster still cannot believe in himself. The book's full-color illustrations allow kids to identify with today's school classroom setting, and with a boy like Webster. So, what happens that opens Webster's eyes to the real truth about himself? Is it through Mia, Caleb, or Hannah? or Ms. Pumpernickle? or Mom and Dad? Webster's lesson learned isn't without some disappointment and trepidation. Yet, the end result surprises even Webster himself.
A Parent Connection page follows the story's end, and helps to round out the book's theme, taken from the scripture, Psalm 139:14, "I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made."
Teaching children that the Creator God formed each one of them with great thought and love, validates in them how special they truly are.
What's So Wonderful About Webster? is a book that seems to be about learning that everyone is different and unique. They all can help by just being them. God seems to know what you are good at even if you don't. This book focuses on that.
What's So Wonderful About Webster? Is about Webster trying to find out what he good at. The concept is that you may want to look to god. As he already knows. This book is good for children and parents. Parents can read it to their children so that they learn the lesson that god as a plan for them.
The pictures tell the story. The pictures are done well. I see that Webster kind struggles with he good at. But websites parents try and help him out or at least guide him. That God knew before he was born at what he was good at.
Boys and girls, just like men and woman, are created in God’s image. Unfortunately, we don’t always see how that applies to us. I think that children often confuse their lack of ability in a certain area for being less than. Less than their friends or classmates, less than a sibling or cousin, less than everyone else. Human nature leads us to focus more on what we can’t do than the one or two areas where we excel. So, What’s so Wonderful About Webster? By Stephen and Alex Kendrick, with illustrations by Daniel Fernandez (B&H Kids, 2019) (inspired by the film Overcomer) comes along at an ideal time. We need to get over giving participation trophies, and acknowledge the unique person that God created each of us to be. A person with unique gifts and talents. Webster, in his opinion, has no talent, he’s a klutz, and probably reminds you of the kid who always gets picked last at recess or in gym class. And now it’s time for games day at school, it’s a fierce competition between classes, and Webster is convinced that he should be sick and stay home from school so he won’t be a liability for his team. He goes to school and realizes that God has given him a special gift, a gift that ultimately helps his class win. A delightful way to teach children that we’re all a part of God’s family, and each member of the family brings something special to the table. I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. There was no requirement to write a positive review. 5/5
