Shawn MacKENZIE is a life-long student of the strange and mysterious—myths, arts, religions, sciences, the occult—as well as all creatures, seen and unseen, real, cryptic, great, and small. She’s the author of The Dragon Keeper’s Handbook, Dragons for Beginners, Llewellyn’s Little Book of Dragons, and the upcoming Tarot of Dragons, as well as numerous essays and fictions. Minnesotan by birth, she now lives in the shadow of the Green Mountains with ten cats, a guinea pig, and an Amazon parrot.
I must add a disclaimer before continuing along with this review. I genuinely cannot tell whether the author believes this book or not. The “organizations” mentioned are, well, not what I was expecting—especially from Llewelyn.
The book was a flash back to my first experience with Witchcraft. My friend invited me to a full moon ritual and my only context was our shared obsession with the House of Night series. I wasn’t sure what to expect as a 13 year old with next to no religious or spiritual experience. I only the fictional books to guess from. Llewelyn’s Little Book of Dragons gave me the same exact nervous, questioning, curiosity that I had all those years ago. Except, unlike my full moon ritual where I learned Wicca was a modern religion similar to those of the old ways like the tribes we learned about and the ancient Egyptians. This book… this was as if we’re taking the House of Night series as legitimate.
The “history” if you can call it that, was laughable. How convenient that there are zero artifacts left behind? Trying to suspend disbelief became impossible.
This was not what I expected from this book. From Llewelyn I’m disappointed and far more hesitant to trust their books now. Absolutely nothing relating this to Witchcraft or Paganism. It’s a strange underground cult at best, at worst it’s merely a fantastical story that people play along with. The book never discusses this either.
I loved Shawn MacKenzie's/Llewellyn's new "Little Book of Dragons." The writing - which obviously honors extensive expertise and research - is rich with facts and stories and lore and history and humor. Be sure to read every word because MacKenzie includes some laugh-out-loud zingers throughout. The tome regales us with the language of Dragons, about Dragon species, assorted stories on the history of Dragons, living with Dragons, about festivals and fun, and - for those who dare - where to find them. The design and layout is candy for the eye with multiple interesting sidebars, lists of tips, and Dragon art throughout. This book is beautifully put together. Every page was an adventure. A most enjoyable read. A true delight!
Well written but not what I expected. I thought it was about a personality type. But it’s not. It’s written as though someone truely believes that dragons are real. A very in-depth account that reads like a txt book on how to look after dragons - dragon types and histories. With only two very short stories and some healing recipes for dragons only to consume at the back. I haven’t read anything quite like it before.
Cute little book about dragons, the history, some stories, and a general easy and fun read.
This book doesn't delve into crazy specifics but it does go into a lot about dragons, practically covers everything you need to know about them.
I do wish there were more stories and myths of dragons included but it was a cute little book I found at a crystal shop a long time ago. It's one of those books where you can pick it up anytime and read a few pages and then come back to.
It's been a while since I got excited by a book, but Shawn MacKenzie's Little Book of Dragons soothed my inner child that had stopped believing that these things could be real.
This book was not what I expected. I expected history, teachings on difference dragons, ways to work with them now. What it ending up being is a dragon hunters guide.
