If you thought death was the end...you’d be dead wrong.
Life was barely manageable after my mom was murdered three years ago. I wasn’t sure what my purpose was anymore. But then on my twenty-first birthday, I drank a little too much and fell from the roof of my nine-story apartment building.
I died. Then... I un-died.
Enter Hayden, my really bossy (and hot) guardian angel whose duty is to train me to be the next “Soldier of Light.”
Sound fun? Well, it’s not. I save dead people, helping them move on to the World of Light. And to make matters even worse, they are all troubled souls stuck in the Dark Realm with the devil and his army of demonic creatures. They roam my city’s streets at night, waiting for me to screw up.
The Afterlife is one of Death’s best kept secrets, and I’m living proof. I’m pretty sure I’m the wrong person for this job, despite what Hayden thinks. Guess I’m stuck saving the dead.

“Paranormal elements, action, drama, friendship, struggles, mystery, life and death, romance….all put together nicely, and driven by a strong female MC.”
“An absolute must-read for fans of novels such as “Hush, Hush,” and “Twilight.”

Ireland Gill has spent well over a decade preparing the story line for this new YA series: Negative Zero. It was originally created with intent to be a graphic comic book, but instead turned into a full length novel...and kept growing. Having experienced the sudden loss of her father as a child, Ireland's fascination with the idea of the afterlife grew, along with her imagination throughout her adulthood which further inspired memorable characters whose stories had to be told.
Having been diagnosed with MS on Friday the 13th of September, 2013, Ireland decided she would no longer sit on her series idea that had been mostly already written. Eleven months later, "Negative Zero" (self-published) is not only the first book of her series, but also her debut novel which hit Amazon as of August, 2014.
Ireland is a happily-married nightowl whose further inspiration comes from her husband, three daughters, and lots and lots of music - particularly the band, RED.

I was given an ARC of this book in an exchange for an honest review 💭 all thoughts and opinions are mine though 😉
✏ So I read this one in almost one day.
At the begging it was a little "awkward" if I remember correctly at the first chapter, but once you pasted that one you started getting into the point.
✏It would be a lie to say that I didn't follow the story untill the end of this book and also that the story itself wasn't good enough. As always what happens with the first book of every series is that it's a warm up and it was. At the end , it left us hanging but it's okey it's a series.
✏ The first chapter not my favourite as I said.
✏The cover also :not fun
✏The title I get why is there and maybe that reason will play some role in the near future. I get that. In combination with the cover it's a no for me.
✏Well written. It was obvious that the writter wants to show us that she didn't made up the story right there. That was at least what I understood but I can't be sure, I read only Vol 1 of this series
✏It reminded me of the "Hush hush" if you like that one check this one out. They are similar.

Giving this a neutral 2.5 rounded up to 3 even though I don't usually rate DNF's. Evika and Hayden were my main reasons for dropping this. They are specific types for a specific audience and that's not me. The annoyances with them just slowly built up until I couldn't handle it anymore and I was real-life angry at them. Since the book description didn't tip me off to this, I figured I'd write a cautionary tale type review. What I didn't like:

Also, judging by the specific mistakes in this book like using wrong words (bulked/balked, incident/accident) and the sheer amount of infodumping, I'm thinking this was a self edit and it needed a professional one (at least I'm hoping that's the case). I'm still not even sure how being a Soldier of Light works because I still hadn't gotten to that part even though I was 51% of the way in.

HOWEVER, I think for people who are into LI's like Hayden or this specific couple dynamic, the editing and infodumping might be tolerable because of their interactions. Hence the neutral rating.

This was a great redemption story and start to the Soldier of Light Chronicles! After her mother’s death three years ago, Evika has lost her purpose in life and still isn’t sure how to keep continuing on. On her twenty first birthday, she drinks a little too much, falls out if her nine story apartment window, and dies. Hayden, her guardian angel, brings her back to life months later to become the next soldier of light. Together, Hayden and Evika are supposed to free seekers, souls that are imprisoned to Alysto (the devil), that are still evil. This book has an unique and interesting twist of the afterlife, god, heaven, the devil, and hell. I liked that she didn’t automatically accept her new role and that she struggled with it as her journey progressed and she starts seeing things that she never had a desire to see. Evika is selfish and stubborn, but throughout her new life, she finds purpose, more about her family history, and self discovery.
J did a really good job with this narration. I liked the different voices that she used for each character and spoke at a steady pace.

I watched the book trailer and I thought to myself.. “I must get my hands on this book!” The story intrigued me from the beginning till the end. Evika struggles daily. I followed Evika throughout her journey in the story and at times I thought she was a little selfish but I feel like that feeling is part of her journey...Of her discovering her TRUE self. Luka is my fave character. He just seems like we could be best friends. I hope to see more of him in the future.

Audio:
I felt like the narrator, Elizabeth Anderson did a fabulous job portraying Evika. I felt like she was Evika. Her voice was perfect. She portrayed the male characters well too. Five stars.

I have to say I saw the cover which is pretty cool so I read the blurb and knew I had to read this book and boy am I glad I did cause it was awesome! Well written I adore Evika and her guardian angel Hayden and their searing hot chemistry! The author has done a fantastic job with the world building and the storyline just grabs you from the start with its action, drama, mystery, life and death and romance and I cannot wait to read more in this series!

Great new series

This is a great start to a new series. Hayden has the makings of being a great book boyfriend.
I really enjoyed this story. It is well written, keeps you engaged from beginning to end and the characters just pull you in so much that you want to know more about them. I can't wait for the next one

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

This is the first book in the Negative Zero series. It is a standalone book with no cliffhanger ending but it certainly does set up the continuation of the series.

This is an interesting twist on the afterlife and guardian angels. Evika is a very well-developed tragic 21- year-old character. It's her birthday - and sadly, also the anniversary date for the death of her mother - when she drinks too much and falls out of her apartment window, dying. But to everyone's surprise, she miraculously comes back to life due to her guardian angel Hayden's intervention. Poor Evika has tragedy oozing from her pores - yet you are riveted by her as she learns the truth about herself and her family history. This book is well written with very good world building.

Narrator, J. Elizabeth Anderson, did a great job and really complimented the written word.

I had a lot of fun reading this! The characters have depth and are entertaining. The guardian angels are very "human" in their personalities and behaviors, and I really like Luka, he's the best friend everybody wants (even though he has a lot of work to do with Evika and Hayden...).
Evika is also interesting. She is stubborn, but still tries to consider different opinions. She is good heroine material, but isn't perfect and boring! I related to her and even felt frustrated at some of her actions like I would a friend.
All in all, I look forward to reading the next installment in this series!

This first book in this series, really kicked everything off wonderfully. You'll have to forgive my brain if it doesn't make much sense it's very tired.

this clearly is representing my brain right now

Tiredness aside there was truly a lot to enjoy about this book. It dives fairly quickly into the story but doesn't information overload you. The information was slowly spread out throughout the book but not in a way that had you bored or anything. If anything it kept you interested as you wanted to work out what Hayden was not sharing.

Speaking of Hayden...he's Evika's yummy overprotective guardian angel. Those two together is kinda hilarious. They are seriously like opposites. But opposites attract right? hehe. But there's nothing quite like havin a Guardian Angel that has a calming effect on her when she has a raging temper. Let's just say the first time she learns what he did to her emotions she was not impressed. But that aside these two definitely have some epic blowups. Or well Evika blows up and Hayden trying to be the level headed practical one gets irritated when she can't see reason.

Okay so a little about the story. The story surrounds a girl who just turned 21 she hasn't had it easy after her mum died 3 years before. She never quite let go of her loss and the boiling rage of losing her mum all to soon. Can't really blame her. But she's lost her path and falls into alcohol to help with the pain. When one night goes to far at her birthday bash she ends up falling of a 9 story building and gets lost in past memories with a guy she learns is her Guardian Angel, one she had in fact once dreamt about. She wakes up in a hospital with months passed by unsure as to how she survived. In fact everyone in the hospital believes it was a miracle that she had survived with the levels of alcohol in her body alone and well from falling off a 9 story building!

When she wakes literally everything in her world changes. She learns that there's more to the world than she ever realised. Like that she is what is called a Soldier Of Light. A being created that had a relatively strong soul would be marked with a gift of the Creators choosing. The human would be guarded by their Angel throughout their life, like all other humans are, but once their First Death took place they were reborn in a sense into their new life and destiny, remaining with their Guardian Angel as they worked together to release what are called the Seekers or souls that were prisoners of Alysto (think of him like the devil I guess - holding souls that were evil even once their penance was done). If I explain too much more I think I might give most of it away. But basically she finds herself in a life of new experiences and facing a future that although she has semi accepted in part. But she has this ability that shows up on her first Seeker and she struggles accepting that she has to let the soul move on otherwise she risks something much bigger from happening. You know that saying about opening a proverbial can of worms? its akin to that.

And since I feel like I've given enough information on the story front to hopefully shed some light (hehe the irony right? lol) on the book and what its based around I'm zipping my lips shut.

I really loved the characters in this story and although at times Evika did seem a little childish I also saw just within this first book she did grow a lot and I felt with Hayden by her side she will continual to do so. Although that temper of hers isn't going anywhere I feel she'll continue grow and annoy Hayden in the process. Having said that...we all know its obvious he's gonna be the love interest. Buuut I'm not sure how that'll work out. I'm guessing its probably a big no-no for Guardian Angels and her being who she is...but

It'll all work out because I accept nothing less derh.

I'm still obviously waiting for that ↑ to happen but it will.

Be ready to be thrown into a new unique world on the typical Angel, Demon spin of things. I'm sure you will enjoy every minute of it.

What a rollercoaster!

So I finished this audiobook and wanted to review it and each time I went to write that review the feels came rushing back...

Voice is clear and everything is well pronounced so no trouble following along.

Story: Okay, so this might be oversharing but due to my past, this book will forever be dear to me. It resonated with me on a personal level after having experienced a fall from the 6th floor myself with some alcohol in my system and it definitely not being a suicide attempt but getting the judgement that it simply had to be an attempt from the hospital staff. All the feels about myself in hospital, the people closest to me and Evika herself... yeah, I can relate. Great job btw to the author for how she translated all that commotion to paper, very realistic (well, not that I’m a Soldier of Light but all that stuff in the hospital I can relate to). And please don’t worry if reading this gets you the idea it’s a drama or suicidal related book, it’s not. It’s just an intro, a reason for the main character to die (slipping from a balcony after having drank too much), dying often has an amount of drama to it but it’s just that one moment. That’s it. It just happens to be an emotional rollercoaster for me personally, every single detail from that minor part of the story hits me like a ton of bricks.

I love that the guardian angel lifted Evika’s mind (or soul) from her body to the Memory Realm while her body was recovering. It was informative and touching all at once.
I have to confess that at some times it did feel like this book was more meant as an intro into the series. Not that it’s a short story or anything but it’s all just starting up in this book. It’s all new of course and I do believe the next book will be more fast paced just because the whole ‘being the Soldier of Light’ has already been explained in this first book of the series. But the whole idea that this is a bit less fast paced can easlily just be my feelings talking because I did need to collect myself again after some scenes before I could read on. It was a rollercoaster filled with emotions for me. I also love the take on the good and evil in this book.
So about the story itself: the Soldier of Light has the role of saving the lost souls (Seekers) who became stuck in this particular intriguing realm (that you just have to read about yourself) and can’t cross over as they’re meant to. And the Soldier of Light sort of becomes “active” after dying. That sort of jump-starts your destiny as the Soldier of Light, before the heart gets that jump-start there really is no way of knowing what part that person (in this case Evika) will play once she (or he) has died. Afterwards she’s as alive as she was before but after that first death (which is named “the crossing”) she, the Soldier, is able to see the dead and her Guradian Angel who will guide the Soldier of Light through every step of her duty. Not only can she see the dead and her own Guradian Angels but the other Guardian Angels as well and more (won’t spoiler the other new entities on the playing field but I will say those creatured are well chosen and feel very logical and mysterious enough to elaborate on in any of the next installments so I can’t wait to discover more about them).
All in all I love this book and can’t wait for book 2!

** audio book review **
This was a very cool, unique paranormal story. Evika, a girl full of pain, dies due to a bad decision on her part. Now she is seeing the man from her dreams. His name is Hayden and he is her guardian angel. Quickly he tells Evika how she is special and why she was brought back to life. She has a supernatural job to do. A job that runs in her family. Soon she is discovering family secrets and what she thought she knew about her life is actually the opposite. As she tries to deal with her life changing drastically and having a big burden on her now, she is also still the young woman who is grieving the mother she knew. This writers style and the narrator went wonderfully together. I felt Evika's pain the whole way through. Don't worry this isn't a story to just break the listener/reader. There is hope in this book and a lesson that we never know what life truly has in store for us. And talk about a hunky angel! Where can we get a Hayden?! The attraction between Evika and Hayden is electric. Is she destined to follow in her father's footsteps? I can't wait for the next book to be released!

This is a good start to a new series. A quite unique take on angels and demons that intrigued me from the start. Hayden, the author does a great job with him. I liked that the book wasn't what I expected and wasn't predictable. I had gotten into a rut with all the YA books I listened to being the same-old-same-old and this was a refreshing change.

Evika was a good character, if a bit frustrating at times. She wasn't the same as the others and had her own opinions and takes on things. I liked that about her but some of her actions made her come across as juvenile. The book kept my attention start to finish. The narrator did a pretty good job with it, but I would have liked a bigger change in character voices (only personal preference here). I will absolutely read the next in this series to see what happens.

It was a 4/5 for me.

Thank you to the author for the review copy of this audiobook. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

It is hard to believe that 'Negative Zero' is Ireland Gill's debut novel, as it was so accomplished. On reading her author bio, I discovered that she had spent a decade creating her fantasy world, and her level of dedication really shows. She really does transport the reader to the afterlife with captivating writing, allowing you to see things from the character's perspective. Her descriptions are so clear and vivid, and her characters are so 'real', with complex emotions and eternal struggles.

There is darkness and there is light, just as there is good as there is evil, which our strong female lead Evika, must get to grips with in the afterlife, if she is to fulfil her role as Soldier of Light. But, as she learns about her task of saving troubled souls, she also learns secrets from her past, and that things are rarely what they seem. Will Evika thrive or will she be torn apart by all the things she though she knew.

Young Adult/Teen Fiction lost me a long time ago, around about the time the Twilight Saga, and hundreds of similar book hit the shelves. It had all become so predictable, with one storyline being rehashed in dozens of books. But, I'm happy to say that YA fiction has found be again, thanks to Ireland Gill, and her great fantasy novel 'Negative Zero'. Her unique plot line, set in the afterlife had me gripped from start to finish, and had everything from action to peril, romance and uncertainty, with characters that I actually felt invested in, both the good and the evil. The pacing of the novel was great and the descriptions really set the eerie and other-worldly scenes,

If you have lost an appreciation for Teen Fantasy novels, get it back with this amazing book from Ireland Gill, it was a real joy to read. I already have the second in the series 'Absolute Zero' on my bookshelf.

In a simple sense Negative Zero is a novel that focuses on good and evil. But, instead of focusing on the very black and white nature of the concepts, it goes into the shades of grey that exist between the two. Not only does this come through in the brilliant fantasy plot, it is also evident in her characters – the 'good' characters still have their flaws and their demons, and the 'evil' characters sometimes seem to have justification. It is safe to say that Ireland Gill has created a YA novel that is so different to all the others I have read before, because she has taken a 3-Dimensional approach to her plot lines and characters.

I loved the afterlife setting of the novel, and the idea that when you die on Earth, you may have another life to live elsewhere. Definitely a novel that I would recommend to all fantasy fiction lovers, adult or teenager.

Negative Zero by Ireland Gill is the very definition of a page-turner. I finished this YA belter in jut one day, and I can't wait to get my hands on the next in her afterlife series. It was really well-written, and so addictive that once one chapter was finished, I had to go straight onto the next. Gill's characters were so well-developed too, particularly Evika and Hayden, I found myself really caring what happened to them.

Evika has died on earth, but her time in the afterlife is just beginning, which starts with her meeting Hayden, her Guardian Angel. He tells her that she is to be saver of souls as a Soldier of Light. How will Evika take to her new role, and how will Lucifer himself throw obstacles in her way? This was a fantasy novel that had everything I look for in a book – tension, excitement, and a twist that knocked my socks off.

This is a story about a young girl who celebrates her 21st birthday, who is lost because of the brutal murder of her mother that she has never gotten over. She goes out with friends, drinks too much, and falls to her death, only to be reborn after being saved by her guardian angel, Hayden. She finds out that she is to take her father's place as a Soldier of Light. She begins training to usher souls from the darkness to the light. At times, she is still lost and resentful of her duty, especially after she realizes she experiences the horrors of what her charges committed. You can see her slowly grow and learn what her duty entails. She finds that Hayden and Luka are there to help her fulfill her destiny, even if she resents it. This is a book that draws you in and makes you want to follow her journey. A great read.

she's a world of hurt and pain on the anniversary of her mother's death and also her 21st birthday Evika goes out drinking with her friends and they end up having a fight Evika goes home and drinks some more climbing on the roof to yell at god for what happen in her life, as she's yelling she slips and dies. Meeting her guardian angel and learning that she is no ordinary human but in fact a part of God's plan. She's always fighting everything and everyone because she doesn't trust or believe in anyone. She slowly begins accepting what she has been told. Hayden her angel is there to train her and help her in her assignment from above. Lots of emotions and you come to feel them all. A book worth reading/listening too and taking your time to absorb. Let's not forget about the narrator she did a very good job too. you can tell she got into it. she made you feel all the emotions.

Once I read the blurb about this book I knew I needed to read it. I was immediately hooked after the first few paragraphs and couldn't put the book down! The story follows the life of a young girl named Evika and her guardian angel, Hayden, and how things change after her un-death as she becomes the next "Soldier of Light". Her job is to help trapped souls move on to the afterlife in a way that changes up how the afterlife is normally perceived in a way that hasn't been done before (at least not that I'm aware). I thought the character development throughout the book was very well written and I cannot wait to continue the story with book two. I need to know what happens next!

I received this book for free at my request but the opinion is of my own. Evika is having a hard time not only dealing with her moms death and the anniversary but of her best friend being thousands of miles away. She decides to try to have fun on her birthday but accidentally ends up dying or so she thought. She learns that she’s part of an elite group that’s in charge of sending souls that have gone through punishment to the light. But, not all is what it seems she finds out not only about her calling but how much she really didn’t know of her own life. Very gripping story from start to finish.

I really enjoyed this book. The author isn't afraid to get dark and understands that readers can handle darker subjects and appreciate them. That's what sets this book apart from the guardian angel books I have read.
At first, I wasn't fond of the narrator, but as I listened I really stayed to enjoy her. She is perfect for teh character and does well differentiating the other characters. This adds a great layer to the story.
By the time I was finished, I was itching to get to the next book. Negative Zero was a great adventure.

This was incredible. Evika was just a normal 21 year old with a lifetime of grief and loneliness surrounding her since she lost her mother. One night, one big mistake and now her life was going a totally different direction. Hayden, her guardian angel, is her constant calm to her storm. Together they are fated to help poor lost souls into the light. Problem is, most of them have done extremely evil acts against other people and Evika is now having to deal with their sins in order to help them move on. This book was exciting from the first page and I could not put it down!!!

This was a new and interesting take on the concept of the devil and hell verses angels and heaven. This method of salvation is really intriguing. The MC was very relatable to me and felt genuine. I loved the interaction between her and Hayden. I sympathized with Evika a lot. This is an extraordinary situation and I would be spitting nails, too, if people weren't being upfront with me.

Overall, this was well written and well paced. There were a few consistent errors throughout the book that were a little distracting but nothing big. Nothing horrible enough to lose a five star rating. Interested to see where this goes.

I always love starting a book by a new author. This one is no different. The characters are well formed with interesting backgrounds. You feel like you know these people or someone exactly like them. I've always loved stories which are contain angels and demons. Yeah, they are my weak points. First of all, it was a great made up story, I really enjoyed reading it. The protagonists was sometimes a bit annoying but that's cool. Her "angel" was hottie and charmy. It was interesting that she died and yeah they just training her to fill a duty.
It had many action-packed line which I found really entertaining!
It deserves from me a 4.5 star. :)

This was a unique and fresh take on death, guardian angels, and demons. I've always been a rather dark/morbid person so this story sucked me in from the beginning. The story completely sucked me in and was an absolutely amazing start to a new series. It was full of twists and turns and was a fabulously refreshing read from start to finish. Ireland Gill wrote this in such a relatable way. Absolutely captivating. Can't wait to read the next book in the series!
