Lovely book, strong characters and plot and full of delicious cusine: but ultimately a bit confusing to follow the stream of characters unfolding from present to past in the narrative. I think I would write like this if I could write a novel.
I can't explain why I love this book so much. This is probably the third time I have re-read it. The story centres around a family of Italian immigrants and food is central to the story. I've always been besotted with Italy and its food, especially when it is authentic. In July we went to Sydney and we had one of the best tasting Italian meals of our lives in a little restaurant we discovered. But I digress.
Julie Capaldo's writing contains characters as rich as the meals they cook with such passion. I highly recommend this book.
DNF at page 56. I came for some 'Looking For Alibrandi' vibes and left with extremely little of those. Too much going on at once. The random jumps from past to present without indicators made it difficult to follow the story. New characters get mentioned without being introduced, and while only barely a quarter of the way through there are already 3 mentions of 'sniffing cheesy feet' in an erotic sense..that is just not for me.
