Ahh, this was a very exciting issue! Lots of tension between all the characters, which were well written..
That which made it even more interesting were the jumps from the family to the dragonslayer, which at a certain point almost led me to believe that the little girl was actually the dragonslayer in the future.. but no spoilers of course!
Best issue so far! (But still 12 to go ;))

Bit of a mixed bag, but the good outweighs the bad. It has the same problem as volume 2, namely that way too much time is devoted to non-dragon-hunting stuff.
The book begins with an awesome intro wherein we finally see the sisters of vengeance generate what amounts to a nuclear explosion to take out a giant dragon lounging amid the skeletons of fallen warriors.
Then some scavengers show up, looking for rare dragon gems. This is also interesting but things quickly veer into the realm of family drama, and it’s dreadful.
It’s intercut with a second thread which shows the dragon knight, Mara, en route to investigate a remote village that may be infected by the veil. This thread is a lot better.
SPOLIER
The family of veil scavengers is led by 2 brothers who quarrel a lot, usually over money. There’s an old blind seeress. The older brother’s wife. And his daughter who idolizes dragon knights. They bicker, sell their wares, hunt for gems etc. and cross Mara’s path several times.
Mara dispatches a bunch of brigands at a toll bridge.
Mara arrives at the village and diagnoses plague, not veil. However, a malignant plant arouses her suspicions, and, after exhuming a corpse that shows signs of the veil, she determines there must be a dragon in the remote Ebontooth wastes where the plant was found. This was a strong scene, building suspense for the dragon. And it was a neat idea that a dragon could materialize in an uninhabited area and thus go undetected for years.
Mara immediately heads out for Ebontooth, stopping only to gather info and briefly visit her sister and her family in a nearby town. While there, she expresses a desire to have a child of her own, something forbidden to dragon knights.
Mara’s nephew is reading a book on family — how it is the source of all struggles, jealousies, and resentments but also of meaning, ambition, and strength. I guess that’s the theme of the dual family narratives (but who really cares).
Meanwhile, the veil scavengers have gotten shipwrecked and lost, and are unbeknownst to them wandering deep in the veil. It was interesting to see them go mad, become enraged, develop mutations, and murder each other. The veil is terrible indeed.
As the girl is fleeing her mad uncle, the dragon shows up out of nowhere. Very nice surprise, almost a “jump scare.” I like how all the dragons in the series have unique designs.
The uncle gets eaten, but before the dragon can eat the girl, Mara shows up. After a battle, the dragon is defeated.
Mara vows to protect the now-orphaned girl; she finally has found a daughter. And a final twist — the girl’s name is Eleanor, who grows up to be the black-haired dragon knight from volume 2.
This book isn’t inked but has digitally darkened pencils, which some may find cheap.

2.5 stars. My second-favorite book of the series in the way of plot.

The art isn't as good as in the previous two books in the series but the story remains good.
