Delta Team Two #1

Shielding Gillian

Rate this book
As an event planner, Gillian Romano’s an expert at rolling with the punches and solving unexpected problems. But her flight getting hijacked while returning from a job is definitely out of her skill set. Passengers are being murdered, and when she’s chosen by the terrorists to be their mouthpiece, even more innocent lives rest on Gillian’s shoulders. Only the calm, reassuring voice on the other end of the line keeps her sane, forging a bond with a stranger she’s never seen but trusts with her life.

Walker “Trigger” Nelson and his Delta Force team have spent years training for close-quarter hostage rescue. When they get called to South America to attempt to save an airplane full of hostages, he doesn’t expect to meet a woman who rocks his world in the middle of the op. Gillian’s cool head and bravery in the face of certain terror—and possible death—blows him away. Any outcome that doesn’t include Gillian leaving that plane alive and well is not an option.

After their safe return to Texas, both Trigger and Gillian are excited to find out if their instant chemistry can survive the real world. Neither realizing that someone isn’t happy with the outcome of the hijacking, and is watching, waiting, for a second chance to strike.

Shielding Gillian is the 1st book in the Delta Team Two Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

I am literally amazed at the number of 4 and 5 star reviews for this absolute piece of drivel. Susan Stoker is interesting to me - some of her books I absolutely love, then others are so bad you have to question if it's even the same author. Anything with a Delta team you know is going to be completely hit or miss.

This was definitely a miss.

I'm not even going to tag potential spoilers as anyone considering reading this book should know what they're in for.

Let's start with the whole insta-love connection, which I really don't like to begin with but in this case it was just too ridiculous. Trigger our "hero" is drawn to Gillian our "damsel in distress" after he reads the transcripts of her interacting with a hostage negotiator while she is stuck on a plane that has been hijacked.

Transcripts. Words on paper.

He has never seen her, never spoken to her, never heard her voice and all she's really done is relay the hijackers demands.

While he hadn’t heard her voice, and he couldn’t read her emotions through her words, he could still tell she was terrified. And for some reason, that bothered him.... She could be a harpy, or some vain chick only concerned about how many selfies she could post on social media. But he didn’t think so.

I think this is a new level of ridiculous. He's on his way to a mission to rescue a plane load of people (many of whom have already been killed) and he stops to reflect on his love life (or lack thereof) and ponder his strange attraction to this woman he's never met. At least she doesn't feel the connection until after she's heard his voice, although to be fair, she doesn't know he exists until he takes over from the former hostage negotiator who we're told is a massive tool even though it has no bearing on the story; unless it's to help explain her instant attraction to Trigger because there is literally no other explanation for it.

Why couldn't the attraction have formed during negotiations? After he'd spoken to her a couple of times and she'd done something to prove how spunky she is? The set up was there, but instead we get the "it's fate" explanation.

So the whole hijacking thing. It's probably supposed to be tense and shocking at times but as a reader I was so busy shaking my head at the absolute stupidity of the hijackers that I didn't feel anything except exasperation. Gillian is chosen to be the one to speak to the hostage negotiator. She has to use the hijackers mobile phone. Do the bad guys make her put it on speaker so they can monitor what is being said? NO! They just trust her to relay the other side of the conversation. She gives the rescue team "clues" as to what is happening on the plane by making up a story about her PARENTS WORKING ON A PLANE!

Worst. Cover. Story. Ever.

Of course the hijackers, being idiots, don't pick up on what is happening and Gillian is praised by Trigger for being such a smart, cool-under-pressure woman. Yes, well done coming up with a story with clues so obvious a five year old would be shaking their head with disdain.

At one point the bad guy "monitoring" the phone conversation with the hostage negotiator gets up and walks away LEAVING GILLIAN TALKING ON THE PHONE! In what world would that happen??? At this point Gillian offers to "forget" to hang up the phone so that the good guys can eavesdrop on the bad guys and maybe learn some stuff that will help with the rescue and TRIGGER SAYS NO! Oh FFS I almost gave up on the book at this point. Of course she leaves the phone on anyway, being such a strong, independent woman and all.

So yada yada yada, the good guys rescue the hostages, Gillian is seen as a hero for doing literally nothing special except tripping as the bad guys are trying to get away and everyone gets on with their lives. Of course Trigger and Gillian end up meeting up again and the whole interaction literally made me hate Gillian as a character and start rooting for the bad guys to come back and finish off the job. I shit you not, this is how she describes herself to Trigger when she's laying down the law:

I’m different from most women. I don’t do drama. Women in general are really bad about that....They don’t get their way, they cause a scene. They think they should be getting more attention than they are, so some dress more flamboyantly and outrageously. That’s not me. I say it like it is, but don’t do it for any kind of reaction. I prefer honesty to lies because it’s just easier.

First of all, how utterly demeaning to women you self-absorbed, condescending asshole. And second, saying "I don't do drama" is usually a red flag that you should get the fuck away from this person as soon as possible. People who "don't do drama" generally don't need to go around stating the fact because it's obvious.

Of course men don't get off any easier:

A lot of them [men] feel as if it’s okay to smack a woman simply because they’re a man, stronger and better than a woman because they have more muscles and a dangling piece of flesh between their legs they pee through. It doesn’t make it right, but bad things happen to good women all the time.

So women are dramatic bitches and most men like to go around beating on women to feel powerful. And this is coming from the "heroine" of the story.

I basically skim-read after this point. At one point she is kidnapped by a drug-cartel but in that cringe-worthy "plot" point nothing important really happens so is barely worth mentioning. The final bad guy of the story was obvious from about 45% into the book, although you suspect it earlier.

The entire book is like the author had to release a book ASAP to fulfil some contract obligation, so cobbled together a half-assed story full of cliches, lazy (or no) plotting, and cookie cutter characters and then shipped it off to a publisher without doing even a cursory proof-read.

Susan Stoker. I'm so disappointed. You are much better than this.

Rescuing civilians from hijacking situations is all a part of the job for Trigger and his Delta Force team…but falling for one in the process is definitely new territory for him.

Best. Holiday. Gift. Ever.... Susan sent me a signed advanced edition AND the special "tushie" addition (both of which I received on 12/24.) I was (and still am) so, so moved, and flattered, and well, I don't have adequate words to express just how special this is - she not only named the heroine and start of her exciting new Delta Team 2 series after me, but wrote a dedication to me as well! Yup, I'm the shameless producer who had the pleasure of working with her and her husband on their episode of "Mountain Life." I did indeed bombard her with questions about her career as a hugely successful author and I did relentlessly lobby her to use my name in one of her upcoming books. In doing so, I was kidding, but only sort of - I mean, this is bucket list stuff we're talking about here, people! Two years later, this is it and I am completely floored, honored, humbled... All I can say is WOW!!!

Gillian Romano is a strong, intelligent, confident heroine - a wonder woman whose strength of character I'd be flattered to embody even just a tenth of.

The story begins right away with gripping, edge-of-your-seat action putting Gillian on her path to meet her Alpha, Walker "Trigger"Nelson - a super-intense, muscle-y, hottie. Trigger is an ANIMAL - noble in purpose, protective, and a total freak in the sheets (Lawwwwwd have mercy!) Their love story is nothing short of a roller coaster thrill ride with twists and turns you won't see coming... I can't wait for this book's release in April so everyone can enjoy it as much as I did.

In the meantime, I guess I have to wait alllllllll the way until August for Lefty & Kinley's story...

I enjoyed listening to this book. It is my first full-length novel by this author. I read a novella before- I think. Listen, is this a revolutionary military romance? No. Is it formulaic writing that I think continues in other books? Yes.
However, if you like :
- instant love lust connection
- mystery-solving plotline
- alpha hero ( that sometimes annoyed me, I swear some of this shit only can fly in books)
- plot twist ( that I guessed, I have to brag I never EVER guess them this early on, I think I went for the unlikely thing)
then give this one a chance

but I think most of the readers have already this author so you know what can you expect...

I think I will continue with the series...

Shielding Gillian starts right in the middle of the action with a hijacking and Delta Force in for the rescue! When Gillian and Walker "Trigger" Nelson are thrown together in unusual circumstances, sparks truly fly. Gillian is such a relatable character, and Trigger is a sexy alpha who will always be there to defend and protect. This is an exciting romance packed with suspenseful and steamy moments that will have you flipping the pages to find out what happens next! I look forward to Lefty and Kinley's story!

So, this might veer off into crazy territory, but just stay with me for a minute. I’ve reviewed several of Susan Stoker’s book (series). If you’ve read my reviews, you know I really enjoy—like REALLY, SUPER A LOT—enjoy her books. I think I’ve compared some of her books to shopping at Target (both great experiences). And I’ve compared her books to cool breezes on the beach. I tend to relate her books to experiences or feelings I’ve had. Positive ones. I tend to do that with a lot of things in life. It’s how I relate to stuff. So, that’s not entirely crazy in of itself. I’m not ‘crazy’ crazy. I’m just...a little bit crazy, like cray, with no ‘z’. :)

So, what is Susan Stoker’s new Delta series? It’s coffee syrup flavors. Yeah. That might be crazy. But Trigger (Walker) is just so sweet. He’s my favorite syrup right now—salted caramel. And if I’m going to play this whole analogy out, then Gillian (which is my favorite heroine name b/c it’s my daughter’s name) is the coffee. Blonde roast (you know the pun I did there when you read the book). When I think of coffee, I think substantial, strong and reassuringly familiar. You know coffee even if you don’t like coffee. Coffee is the foundation for all other good drinks that come from it—frappes, lattes, iced, cappuccinos. Some people can drink the base like that and be content. I’d say Gillian is content. Until she’s not. Sometimes a plane highjacking makes you change your perspective. She has good friends, loving parents, and a successful career. That’s nothing to sneeze at. For some people it’s enough to be content. Until it’s not.

Enter salted caramel. It’s sweet with smooth buttery undertones. It’s reassuringly familiar. Trigger is sweet like that. He’s a man that knows his own mind. He’s been tried and tested. And he’s not interested in wasting his time. Trigger is that guy you feel comfortable and relaxed with. He makes you feel good. When you read Gillian and Walker together, you realize they fit perfectly. They’ve always fit perfectly. Some might balk at mixing coffee and salted caramel syrup. Don’t. It’s like it’s always been together.

Shielding Gillian is Susan Stoker’s newest series—new Deltas. I’m excited about getting to know this new group of ‘brothers’ and their loves. I can’t wait to see what my next favorite flavor is. Xoxo

I love Ms. Stoker's other series, and this one doesn't disappoint.

Walker/Trigger (never do find out about his nickname) is the negotiator in a hostage situation where Gillian/Di is picked as the spokesperson for the bad guys. They connect over the phone, and then reconnect later when they are both back home. Walker has a big mouth and messes up several times. He's lucky Gillian has a big heart. SLLLLOOOWWW to the bedroom is Walker. Danger follows them home, and she's kidnapped. The team steps in and helps her save the day. Can't to watch the rest of the team fall.

Eeeeeeppppp!

After a very long, very bad week, this book was the breath of fresh air that I DESPERATELY needed!

We were all introduced to Delta Team Two in Ms. Susan's previous books, but only at a glance. This is the first in her new series revolving around Delta Team Two, their members and the women they fall in love with.

Walker "Trigger" Nelson and his team of Delta's are known for their specialized work and getting the job done. When a case comes over their desk involving a hijacked plane with American citizens on it, the teams jumps to the rescue. With his team of highly skilled soldiers, Trigger and his team heads down to South America...little does Trigger know this mission will change his life forever.

Gillian Romano was just heading home from a long-term event she had planned, she never thought something like this could happen, let alone happen to her.
Her plane is hijacked, she is held against her will, forced to watch people being killed in front of her...and all she can think of is keeping everyone and herself alive while help comes. When help finally comes, it arrives in the form of a phone call. Without even meeting the man over the lined named Walker, Gillian feels a since of relief. The call is the lifeline she needs to push forward and wait as the situation is resolved.

Trigger is awed by Gillian, by her strength and selflessness. The clues she gives them over the phone, and the cool head she keeps while he and his team try to sort through the mess of saving them. Their connection is hot and unlike anything either of them have felt before...but will that continue when they are safe and back in the states.

What happens when they hijackers decided they are done with Gillian and the park she played in the situation? There bond will be tested, but will they overcome it?

The tension rises in this book quickly and you're kept on your toes guessing at all times, it's such a rush! I binged through this in a matter of hours, I couldn't put it down and was so sad when it ended, but so happy at the same time. Shielding Gillian reminded me a little of Caroline and Wolf's story, and I really enjoyed the glimpse we get of some of the older characters from other books.
--Not telling though, spoilers!---

5 out of 5 stars for sure, and I can't wait for the next to be released!
P.S loved the Wonder Woman nickname!!

Three cheers for Gillian & Walker (AKA Trigger) & the new Delta team on the block! Well, they're not new, but their stories are. *grin* This one starts of the series with a lot of action, the hijacking, the rescue, the mystery when they get home! We get to see a little bit of Mary & Truck & the first Delta team. And there's some ANNIE in there, too! I'm so, so, SO delighted with the way this author is writing Annie throughout the books - we are getting to watch her grow up & I just think that's super neat story telling!

Walker & Gillian are both smart & great communicators (after a TIIIINY little bump, that is). : ) Walker shows a lot of respect for Gillian in the way he treats her, and I just really enjoyed the way their relationship progresses & the feelings they bring out in each other. And of course we get a sneak peek at the next story with Lefty & Kinley, which is looking like it's gonna be VERY interesting (as are they all)!! : )

Virginia Rose did an amazing job narrating.

Shielding Gillian is the first book in Susan Stoker’s newest series about the men of Delta Team Two and the women they fall hard for. After all, the toughest men fall the hardest and Walker “Trigger” Robinson is no exception. Trigger is all Delta, through & through. Deadly, laser focused, protective and married to the job. But seeing some of the other Delta soldiers finding their true love has Trigger wanting a forever woman of his own. When he meets Gillian while on a hostage rescue mission, he’s thrown for a loop. Trigger is impressed by Gillian’s strength & bravery in the face of certain danger. So much that he can’t get the striking beauty out of his mind even several weeks later. When his Delta Team receives word of the potential threat of a seventh hijacker, Trigger doesn’t hesitate to make contact with the woman who’s already touched his soul and begun to capture his heart. Now if he can just keep her safe long enough to convince her they belong together forever.

Trigger & Gillian’s relationship is an intense, slow burn that leads to a powerful love. I love that Trigger wants to take things slow to make sure their feelings aren’t based solely on the highly charged emotions of the hijacking. I love Trigger’s protectiveness of Gillian and how real he is - insecurities & all. Gillian fills in the gaps of his soul perfectly.

I love how the author seamlessly adds in tidbits of life from some of our favorite characters like Truck & Mary and of course our favorite little girl Annie. The men of Delta Team Two are a great addition to a wonderful world created by Susan Stoker and I can’t wait for Lefty & Kinley’s story!

Note: I listened to the audio version of this book which came out a week prior to the book.

Susan Stoker's stories are always enhanced by the rich, complex, multilayered characters she creates. You become invested in them because they are genuinely likeable. She paints such vivid pictures with her writing you will gasp in surprise, or reel in shock or find yourself holding your breath at the edge of your seat as events unfold. Shielding Gillian certainly will make you sit up and take notice. It's not only a great suspense story it's a marvelous romance.

Can I just tell you how much I like Gillian Romano. She is so darn strong, rsourceful, down-to-earth, no nonsense, loyal and loving. Her strength and resilience are remarkable and shine through during dangerous, deadly situations. Walker "Trigger" Nelson is Delta through and through. He's lethal, focused, protective and a man looking for the love of his life. He may have found her in Gillian. She fillls all the holes in his life he never knew he had. Gillian wants to find true love like her friends have and she discovers him in the most unlikely place. He's her rescuer during a hijacking. They slow walk their relationship and it leads to a powerful love.

Trigger knew the minute he heard her voice that Gillian was going to matter to him. More than just a job... more than anything. Gillian was not looking - or smelling her best- but Trigger made her feel things that she never had before.

I have read a lot of Susan Stoker's books. A. Lot. I have struck out recently with her. But I was really holding out hope for this one. I just didn't really feel it? The chemistry, the romance even the suspense all seemed muted and blah to me. (I mean I was 74% of the way through the book when the suspense was just starting to pick up and it was really obvious who the bad guy was...) I am also not totally sure I actually knew anything about the characters in the end - why were they so drawn to each other? What made them so sure about each other? And it was just very... formulated.

I could not wait to read Trigger’s story and the start of the Delta Team Two series. Susan Stoker has once again created another fantastic series that readers can loose themselves in. Trigger and Gillian had incredible chemistry right from the beginning and Gillian showed how brave and strong she was during the hijack. I enjoyed seeing these two get to know each other and becoming more serious as danger still lurked. The special appearances of some past favorites was a nice treat! I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

Gillian finds her soulmate❣️

Trigger/Walker and his team get called in when a plane of passengers is taken hostage and has landed in Venezuela🇻🇪 Trigger speaks with Gillian as a negotiator and is immediately attracted to her, even though they’ve never met....and even though the timing is bad😱

Suffice to say I loved this story even though I have yet to read the first series of Delta books, which I had meant to finish before starting this one but I couldn’t stop myself🤩 I’m excited to see what happens next with Lefty and Kinley😍

This is book 1 in the new Delta series and it starts off with a bang! We met this team in the other Delta series but now we get their stories. This one is about Walker “Trigger” Nelson and Gillian Romano. Gillian is an event planner who is on her way home when her flight is hijacked. Passengers and crew are being murdered and the hijackers elect her to be the one to talk to the negotiator. Trigger and his team have been sent in to to hopefully save a plane full of hostages. He doesn't expect to feel a connection to the woman on the other end of the phone. But he is determined that whatever he feels can be explored once he gets her safely away from the plane and back home. But what neither of them realize is that someone isn't happy that she survived and they are waiting for a chance to get payback.

I absolutely loved this first book in the new series! Gillian went through something that no one should ever have to go through. And she dealt with it in a way that I don't think many would or even could. This woman has such a deep well of strength that you don't even realize that she may be struggling like everyone else. She is sweet, strong, but above all else just a genuinely caring individual. Walker is definitely the alpha, protective male but he also knows he wants to have someone that can stand at his side. Not always needing him to stand in front of her. And while he is protective of her, he still manages to step back and let her be who she needs to be. They have this beautiful relationship that isn't all about the physical, although yes there is definitely chemistry and sparks there! There is a spot in it that talks about souls that absolutely resonated with me. I loved it!! And after the tease at the end for Kinley's story-I can't wait for the next one!!

Shielding Gillian became one of my favorite Susan Stoker stories.

I loved the maturity and grace and class Gillian embodied. Along with confidence, caring, gentleness. I connected quickly with her and felt wrapped up in her while living out the story.

I adored Walker's protectiveness, strength, wisdom, respect, understanding, compassion. He almost seemed too good to be true at times, but that's what made him all the better! And his always holding Gilly's face in his hands - loved that intimacy.

I also appreciated how these were older characters than what you usually see (Walker was 37), and how it jived with the reality of their age and life experiences. Now, I know at my age, I feel younger than I am (30 something isn't "old" like my teenage me thought it would be), so it's all in who you are as a person, but for me, this totally worked - and I want more! :)

I always enjoy a book where most of the drama comes from outside sources and once the couple get together (the earlier the better, imo) on the same page, it's them against the world. Yeah they may need to learn each other and have little road bumps, but the bigger drama that moves the story is from outside the couple, and that's what's given to us here.

I was also tickled that for once, I was right in guessing who the bad-guy was and loved watching how my sleuthing was proven correct! lol

SHIELDING GILLIAN by Susan Stoker. I truly do not know how Ms. Stoker does it time and time again. Each book gets better and better. This one is the start of a new series and, while excited about it, I was a bit nervous as the characters would be new and there wouldn't be a real foundation to the cast. However, I should not have doubted this author. I felt as if I knew each one and grew to adore them all. Now to this tale - SHIELDING GILLIAN is filled with danger and mystery and, of course, a love story. Our main characters are strong and independent, yet balance each other out beautifully. Gillian is a hard worker with some wonderful friends and Trigger, of course, is a sexy member of the Delta Team, with his own support system too. Together, they traverse the early stages of a relationship and that was fun to watch. As Ms. Stoker likes to do, there are also some pretty nasty villains that don't hold back. From page one, I was taken in. I could not wait to see what would happen and where the path would lead our amazing couple. I am even more excited for the future books of this series and look forward to them eagerly.

Susan Stoker’s books just keep getting better & better! Trigger is a sexy, strong flawed soldier who is the leader of a Delta team that’s called to Venezuela to save hostages on a hijacked plane. Gillian is an event planner on her way home to Texas after a successful event in Costa Rico when her plane is hijacked and she’s chosen to be the spokesperson for the hijackers. Their story has many twists and turns that keep you turning pages, I could not put it down until I finished it. And what I love about Susan’s books (ok, one of MANY things) is that there is such depth to her characters (even the bad guys), you see such strength in Gillian, yet also her fears and insecurities, and with Trigger you get your awesome Alpha Delta Soldier, yet you see his flaws, protectiveness, and yes, dare I say it, insecurities. Makes me love Trigger even more, and makes Trigger & Gillian one of my favorite books. I also enjoyed the interactions between the team! Definitely on top of my “reread me SOON” list, and should be on your “buy me NOW” list!

Gillian is an event planner. She is on a flight back from South America when her plane gets hijacked, and she is chosen by the hijackers to be the spokesperson with the negociators.
Trigger and his Delta team are called to handle the situation. As soon as Trigger hears Gillian on the phone he is hooked, and while that may sound insane he just feels a connection to her. As scared as she is Gillian also trusts instinctively the stranger on the phone but thinks she is just being irrational.

When both go back to their normal life they can't stop thinking about the other. And when a mysterious seventh hijacker appears to be on the loose, Gillian might well be in danger, but Trigger is decided to protect her at all costs

So I liked this book, but I didn't love it. It felt like all of the action was situated in the beginning, and then we have them settling into their relationship ... so it all lacked some more action. It reminded me of Caroline and Wolf's story who was not my favorite either :)

Shielding Gillian, the first book of Susan Stoker’s second Delta Team series, brings us Gillian Romano, an event planner who was forced to become the mouthpiece of a drug cartel when the plane she was on was hijacked.

She is paired with Walker “Trigger” Nelson, member of an elite Delta Force team sent to neutralise the situation and rescue the passengers.

With this first instalment on a new series, I am excited to meet the rest of Trigger’s team! Susan Stoker has never failed to amaze me with her talent in coming up with gripping stories of the men and women in uniform. I know that this batch of new heroes will definitely live up to their creator’s imagination!

Plus points is getting to know a new narrator in Virginia Rose, who I am happy to say gave the story so much life. Bravo! I am definitely waiting for bated breath for Kinley and Lefty to share their story!

Swoon!

Another steamy, hot, Special Forces team from Ms Stoker and once again they don't hesitate to sweep you off your feet!
Walker admits he is protective but there is something about Gillian that ramps this from a desire to protect to a need to protect. She brings all his cave man instincts out and whilst he can reign his desire in there is no way he cannot react when she is in danger.
You won't go wrong with any of Susan Stoker's series, they are packed with growly Alphas who are gents at heart, when they find their one they claim them and are all in....but do it respectfully. It's not about the sex, but about making their lives everything it can be. Meanwhile the women are strong, independent, sassy women who make you want to shout 'go girl!' We have a long wait for book 2, but I know it will be worth it.

Wonderful!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Shielding Gillian! Gillian and Trigger were perfect for each other! Trigger finds, that like the first Delta team, it is possible to find “the One” while on a mission. He can’t believe his luck in finding someone who accepts his job and the deployments that come with it. Gillian has a life of her own as an event planner. She also has friends who are her support system. Until her kidnapping, she had never found anyone who put her first. Now, they are putting the pieces together to make a lifetime of love happen.

Just keeps getting better!!

Every time I pick up a Susan Stokes book, it just blows me away. I'll finish and say something like "wow" and "there's no way she can top this one".. Oh but she can and she does with each and every book that she puts out!!
I absolutely fall head over hills in love with each and every one of her books and the many character she creates. Shielding Gillian is my newer fav... Well until the next amazing book come out, of course!! ;)
