A collection of poetry, proses and quotes reflecting the highs and lows of life and love. The book is divided into 2 parts- Battles of Life and Battles of Love. These are my battles. These are your battles. These are our battles.
Lovely, and joyfully refreshing! A treasure to read and to refer back to whenever you need affirmatin and/or inspiration. Thank you very much, Gurpreet Kaur, for sharing your heart and thoughts, and thank you for inviting me to read and review your book I hope you keep writing!
*I was asked by the author to review this-all opinions are my own*
To start I will say I haven't read any poetry since i left school nearly 11years ago as it's not a genre I've been drawn to, however there were parts which I did enjoy.
'the toughest to win, are the wars that we fight within'
This was probably my favourite of all the poems/prose as I, and think most people, could relate to it. Whether it's confidence/mental health etc we all at some point have that inner battle and it's not always easy to overcome. There were some others with messages I could relate to and some which I didn't. I'm guessing these have been developed from life experiences/feelings which is what I took away from each one.
One of the reason why I gave this 3 stars was because, for me, it didn't flow. I like a rhythm and a pattern when reading poetry and I didn't find many which had that. I could appreciate the message(mostly) that the author was trying to give out which is, also, why I've rated it with the 3 stars.
I think if you're someone who does enjoy reading poetry then this will be for you and even if, like me you haven't looked at poetry since school, I'd recommend you give it a go. There were some good poems in here and it's a quick read too.
"He’d be like a cape he said, help her fly in the sky. A veil he turned out to be, didn’t even let her see the sky."
This book is divided into two parts - Battles of Life & Battles of Love. The poet pens down some really simple yet relatable poems. Her poems about love describe the pain, and humiliation one goes through a relationship in a very smooth way with words. The poems reflect a touch of Rupi Kaur's poetry, and so you'll find them quite easy to relate. You'll love coping up with the pace since most of them are very short poems comprising of just one or two sentences. I liked most of the poems, but I think a few could have been improved. In the sense of writing, they seemed to be too simple and also the book was quite short than I expected to be. I was enjoying the poems and all of a sudden it ended. I would prefer to read a few more pages. Rating - ⭐⭐⭐. 75
This was a short read. Poems about heartbreak, love, appreciation and life. There were some powerful lines. Some poems were in a story format, but overall this was a good read.
This felt less like reading a book of poetry, and more like reading a book of proverbs.
Admittedly, one of my personal favourite aspects of poetry is how imagery is constructed and this book lacked that a little, but rather than an unintentional fault it was clearly a stylistic choice. Each poem felt comparable to an ancient proverb or moral at the end of one of Perrault's fairytales. As if rather than an exact depiction of an experience we were given the conclusion learned from it, possibly allowing readers to apply messages of resilience and self love to their own lives.
I don't have much to comment on regarding the language. It was very stripped back, almost ascetic. Each word seemed deliberately placed on the page, the shape of the shorter poems provided interesting and varying patterns with negative space. I typically don't particularly /love/ overly short, concise sentences that seem cut off or restricted, but I do respect that it can take a great deal of deliberate care when writing them. They also allow for short impactful statements that manipulate emotions in a manner that is unique from rich imagery or narrative.
This book felt accessible for all readers.
Unfortunately some of my pet peeves in the form of using loose instead of lose, and she/he instead of the all inclusive "they" were present.
Overall, this was a short read with uplifting proverb-like poems that hold an unwavering and sure notion of unapologetic self love.
It was short, easy to read, and very relatable. I felt inspired to practice more self love and pay attention to my own needs. Fantastic collection of poems! I'd recommend this to anyone that likes empowering poetry!
This is obviously a very unfairly biased review but I never thought I could write a book. It is because of all the love and support from my readers that today I have not one but two published books. Thank you for gifting me the most precious thing- your time. Thank you for taking your time out to not only read but also review my book. Some of you had complains about the formatting of this book which has now been fixed. You could go to Manage your Kindle Devices>Content and update the book from there if you've had formatting issues with the book. I would also like to let you all know about my second book - 'i'm done' which is now available on Kindle as well as Kindle Unlimited. If you've enjoyed my work and would like to read more of my work, I would love to get your reviews on 'i'm done' too. Once again Thank you! :)
This was the first time reading a book of poetry. This maybe naïve to say because the last time I read poetry was in high school (over 15 years ago) but I didn’t know poetry can be so captivating. I’ve recently been knee deep in self development books since the start of quarantine and decided to look into poetry to give my mind a mental break. I recently joined the kindle unlimited group here on Goodreads and discovered this gem. Man an I glad to have found it! You will not regret reading this book
Kaur starts off by addressing the reader about how these are her battles and our battles, that one day we will conquer them all. I appreciate this personal touch as immediately you can relate and feel cared for. Kaur reassures the reader that is ok to not be ok, to just be doing the best we can. In a world that is plagued by social media it is extremely easy to fall down a dark hole. Trolls I believe they call them? Although when I think of trolls I think of the toys with the funky hair I had as a kid. I digress. The point being dear reader, that it far too easy to feel bad about yourself these days. We need to stop this and Kaur is that much needed voice that reminds us not to give up, to keep fighting till victory is ours.
The overall theme is life and that in itself is pretty poetic. We spend half our time on this earth just surviving when really we should be living, everyday to the full. This book is a little guide if you will, of what to expect on our travels and the emotions that will betray us alongside learning lessons, taking risks and making mistakes. It all part of the this beautiful annoying yet rewarding thing called life.
From reading these poems, prose and quotes I began to realise how much we take for granted, constantly wishing for things we don’t have. Even when we finally obtain them, we quickly disregard and pine for something else. It showed me that if we are never truly satisfied, how can we be content and enjoy life? If we spend our whole lives wishing it away and never feeling fulfilled, is that really a life lived at all?
This book quickly becomes a long acquainted friend, having your back and telling us the words that no one else dare say. To stand up for ourselves, don’t allow people to treat us bad and walk away from toxic people.
The second part of the book Battle Of Love had a slightly gentler feel. Of course there was plenty of heartbreak, this is love after all folks but it reminded me of sonnets being recited to a balcony window. Sweet melodies plucked from the heart, full of emotion and desire. Heaven to indulge in.
Kaur sends a number of honest messages to the reader, one in particular I enjoyed was to stop looking for love. Only then when it finds you will there be no facade. It will love you for who you are, no pretence. Just you in all your true self. And she’s right. We should love ourselves more. Why not? We are all awesome, amazing people and have every right to celebrate that. We should be proud of who we are and the battles we have faced.
The layout of the kindle version was a little confusing as I wasn’t always entirely sure when one poem started and another finished. Easily fixed I would imagine to help keep the flow and pace. Apart from that it was a pleasant, relaxing read.
I give We Are All Warriors Fighting Our Own Battles By Gurpreet Kaur a Three out of Five paw rating.
This book is prefect for when you’re falling down and need a little pick me up. That much needed hug and gentle voice telling you it’s all going to be ok. Inspiring and empowering, words that everyone needs to hear. Life doesn’t need to be a battle but when it is; so be it, we will do our utmost to make a stand and fight. We are warriors.
Full disclosure: I was asked to read and provide an honest review of this book by the author. The following is my own opinion and impression.
Warriors is a composition of (mostly) short poems about love, self-love, identity, and heartache – all battles and struggles that we face in love and life on a daily basis.
The toughest to win are the wars that we fight within ~the constant battles with yourself
The book is divided into two parts – ‘Battles of Life’ and ‘Battles of Love’.
‘Battles of Life’ was my favorite. This section mostly revolved around growth, breaking through comfort zones, expectations and lies that people are told via social media, society or even to ourselves.
and he died a little every day, comparing his garden to others not knowing that their plants, flowers were not real
~The social media illusion
The second part, ‘Battles of Love’ was centered around heartbreak, love, self-love, and healing. I definitely felt that the battles from the first part contributed directly to the scars and battles in the second and how the author responded to love.
“Opposites attract”- They say
“Then I must be nothing and you must be everything”
All of the battles were identifiable and relatable, I do think that most readers will find a handful of poems in each section that will resonate with them. I found the shorter ones to be much more impactful – some more reminiscent of proverbs, quotes, and statements which I really liked.
Stylistically this collection reminded me of both Rupi Kaur and Amanda Loveless. Many times the titles were summed up at the end, sometimes the negative space was used quite effectively and other times the cascading words illustrated a point.
The format on the electronic version seemed a bit confusing, it was sometimes hard to figure out where one poem ended and the next began, which at times disrupted the flow. I did find a handful of spelling errors or awkward word choices that could easily be addressed with an editor or beta readers and I was slightly distracted by her punctuation.
All in all, I thought it was a promising first book from a young aspiring writer. I would recommend it to other poetry lovers. Being less than 100 pages and available on Kindle Unlimited for free, there is no reason not to give Warriors a go.
-The way that the book was split up into two different kinds of battles. -The author’s no-nonsense relatable style of writing -my favorite poems were the shorter ones. They were almost like quotes and a peek into where the author is coming from -I liked how the book has a focus on self-improvement and self-esteem in the first part of the battles. -I liked how the battles about love were beautifully written, with thoughts and also mini conversations. It makes me wonder who the conversations are between? Who did the author think of when they were writing the conversations? I’m curious to know.
What I thought could be improved:
-I’m picky about cover images even though I know they say don’t judge a book by its cover. I think if the book cover was a little more eye catching and relevant to the content of the book that would be better. -Sometimes simplicity is all we need and other times simplicity is not enough. In this book, I did enjoy the relatable sense of the book but other times I hoped the author would explore more into the feelings and themes of the book. Sometimes it felt like the poems and prose were scratching on the surface of deeper thoughts and emotions. I think that this collection has a greater potential in terms of language and emotional depth. -Length of the book was a little short in my opinion.
Who I would recommend this book to: Poetry lovers, short quote lovers, anybody looking for a short and sweet read.
Why I chose to rate this book three stars out of five: Well, I would have rated it 3.5 but I don’t think I would rate it 4 because of what I mentioned on what could be improved.
"Warriors" is a thoughtful and inspiring collection of poems themed around the different struggles we all encounter in life. Gurpreet Kaur approaches everything from love to loss and meditations on the everyday and profound with deft imagery and a lightness of structure that feels timeless, yet remains relatable.
My review score reflects that I did experience a few formatting issues with the ebook edition, which is perhaps why I felt the organisation of the poems could have been improved a little bit, but I enjoyed the themes the different sections were arranged into, and felt the collection flowed really well as a whole.
There are lots of elegantly written gems here, but probably my favourite from the whole collection is "ungrateful", which so cleverly encapsulates the feelings we've all had about wanting something different so much that we forget to enjoy the moment. ("And when the beautiful flowers bloomed / Instead of watering them / I plucked them.")
What I love about this poem - and the collection in its entirety - is that it makes its points gracefully, but never leaves the reader feeling overly explained to. The writing is never cryptic, and never simple, but hits a perfect balance of meaning and clarity that makes it memorable and thought-provoking. Lovely work!
“All she wanted was someone who she knew would get her even when she thought she wasn’t making any sense – how hard could that be?”
I am not going to lie, the last time I read poetry I was in high school. I found it hard to connect to; I remember long rambling paragraphs about the countryside. It seems with Warriors I have finally found my type of poetry. Warriors is a short read of poetry, proses, and quotes that center around life and love. Split into two parts it is an easy read, filled to the brim with small and long, simple and complicated, touching and devastating poems.
It surprised me how quickly the messages seen in this collection resonated with me. Almost instantly I felt connected to the writer, though they make this easy through writing about emotions I think everyone has felt. While the simple poems let me connect easily to a style of reading I am unused to, it was the longer more narrative style poems that truly resonated with me. One in particular towards the end, about patience and acceptance, I truly loved.
If I took the time to write out every poem from this book I loved, I would have pages upon pages of poems. Instead, I will say the greatest thing about poetry, at least from my inexperienced point of view, is how everyone can see something different in it. I would recommend to anyone feeling in a romantic mood.
So I read this in a couple of minutes because it was really fast-paced and it makes you realize about how healthy (or not) your relationships are; with friends, your couple and even yourself but it does not actually makes you think, and that's what I like about poetry, when it lefts me thinking about what I just read or when I have to read it several times and have different interpretations each round. With this, it was just reading and trying to understand what the writer wanted to communicate, how much has she suffered and learned from those situations or getting rid of toxic people, so that objective was accomplished but very repetitive and as I said, I felt thinking (as the reader) was lacking.
I only highlited two poems/quotes:
"I had to almost loose myself to realize that it was me who I was in desperate need of."
"You cannot choose not to leave and expect to grow."
These were the most significative quotes for me throughout the whole collection. Btw, some quotes/poems seem like they were put there just to fill the collection and make it bigger. Could be better if a poem has more feelings or it's larger, instead of the short quotes anywhere.
Warriors follows the tradition of Rupi Kaur and Harman Kaur.
The collection includes poems about love, loss and battles that we all have to fight at some point in our lives. Some of the poems are really strong and I found myself contemplating my own experiences and feelings. They resonated with me.
The book itself is separated into two sections, Battles of Life and Battles of Love. The only issue I had with the book was that it was too short and I was left craving for more.
Also, the book could be formatted better as for the poems to be a bit easier to the readers eyes. I recommend this poetry collection to anyone out there who likes modern poetry.
Gurpreet Kaur is a new poet and she has already offered some strong pieces in this book, I can't wait for her second poetry collection.
“I wonder if I’ll ever be at peace with this war raging inside me.”
4.5 stars
I was asked by the author to review her book but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a collection of poetry, proses and quotes about life and love. I went into it thinking that it would be just like all the other collections of poetry that I have read. I was quickly proven wrong. Kaur’s work impacted me more than I expected and it honestly was so relatable. I was able to see myself in some of the passages and felt inspired. Her poems convinced women to love themselves before loving someone else. Self love should be put ahead of worldly love. I have published my favorite passages on to Goodreads. Though at times, It was difficult to figure out where one poem ended and the next began. I was also able to find a spelling error that was probably just looked over. All in all, I would recommend this to many people.
I’m not usually a big poetry reader, but I took a chance on this book. I’m glad I did. The themes of love and fighting the battles of everyday life really struck a chord with me. There is emotion behind these poems, a story that is given in snapshots, in the realizations that the poems represent.
I really enjoyed this book. It was so beautiful, in some places sad enough to break your heart, in others it was so hopeful that it makes the heart swell with that wonderful feeling. There was anger, self-realization, pain, happiness, love, tears, and so much more in these poems.
All that said, the reason this book didn’t get a higher rating is that it contained some spelling errors. Possibly some grammatical ones, but I’m not sure if those were mistakes or deliberate choices. Still, it wasn’t bad enough to detract from the poetry. A wonderful book that offers so much to those who take the time to peruse these pages.
I was asked to read and review this book and I can confidently say that I am glad I accepted. I recently fell in love with the poetry genre and this book is definitely one of my new favorites. I felt like I was getting advice from a dear friend. I had no idea how badly I needed to hear those words until I read them. I also thought it was admirable that this book could reach a wide audience. It was a book that ANYONE who has experienced love, heart ache, anxiety, success, and everything in between, could understand. You don't have to be a girl, crying over a boy that broke your heart and is in desperate need to get over him. However, this book is definitely for you, too (I see you, girl). This book is about emotions and simply being human, no matter who you are or what you are going through. That is what makes poetry so beautiful to me.
A few days ago I received a message asking me to read a poetry book, so I went to my kindle store and download it. I must say I’m highly impressed, the author is 19 years old and has so much talent. It’s a collection of beautifully written poems about everyday battles that takes you to a raw and emotional journey. Even if you are not a fan a poetry its’s a short book and very easy to read. You can read it in one sit, or as I did, slowly read each one of them and let them get to you. It is available on Kindle Unlimited for free. “Let love find you” 💕 - “He made dreams look so real that waking up seemed fake.” - “In this cruel world, having a sensitive, soft, big heart is a blessing indeed and do no let anyone make you beleive otherwise.” - “You should have come dressed in a grey cloak, surrounded by smoke. At least then I would have known that you’d be the end of me.” - @gurpreetpoetry
I’m going to start off by saying that I don’t usually read many poetry books, they’re not really my cup of tea. I was a bit wary going into this book at first, but once I kept reading, I could feel a connection to it that just hooked me on.
Mostly all of the poems were meaningful and powerful, and Kaur really makes you think about what is being said. I also think it was a great idea splitting the poems into two sections, giving it a real impact.
Now the reasons I didn’t give this book a full 5 stars is for two reasons. One, it was really distracting to read, especially in e-book form, because the format to bf was wonky a lot of the times, and two, I just wish the book had been longer. I really wanted to read more and I still do.
**Disclosure: I was asked to read and provide an honest review of this book by the author. This review is my own opinions and impressions.**
‘We Are All Warriors Fighting Our Own Battles’ by Gurpreet Kaur, is a short collection of inspirational and motivational poems. It is a quick read, but thought provoking and had me pondering the themes behind the words.
I was asked to give my opinion on this book, and I enjoyed it. I do enjoy reading poetry, and I especially love poetry of this nature. Worth the read if you love poetry or are looking for quotes that centre around the highs and lows of life.
I found the structure of the book itself interesting, some with titles, others without. I liked how some were structured like a question and answer, and others like mini stories.
A refreshing and unique read to me and I would love to read more by this author.
Poetry isn't a genre I personally feel comfortable with. That said, this book is an excellent choice for someone like me as the poems are very personal yet ones I could easily relate to personally.
Organizationally Kaur's book is divided into two parts and there is one poem per screen in the ebook. The poems are short, with I believe only one spanning more than one screen. This made the entire book of poetry easy to read through in just a few sittings.
While the book is incredibly accessible there is also much to savor. If you're looking for a book of poetry that is easy to understand as well as rich in depth, Warriors is an excellent choice.
3.5 stars You could probably fit what I know about poetry in a thimble and still have room left over, but I do occasionally run across something that calls to me. This collection of poetry about love and life did just that. Rather than what I normally think of with poetry, the book feels a little like reading random life lessons or even quick anecdotes or proverbs. The whole thing can be read in under an hour, or you can pick one that speaks to you on any given day and enjoy the book over time. As with any collection, there were some poems that I enjoyed more than others, and there were some that made me ponder things and some that didn't. Overall, I did enjoy Warriors and this quick trip outside my norm.
"Warriors: We are all Warriors Fighting Our Own Battles by Gurpreet Kaur (@gurpreetpoetry )— I am usually not one to pick up a book of poetry, but I sat down with a glass of iced tea while I was visiting my parents and enjoyed the evening reading Gurpreet Kaur's first book of poetry. What I admire about poets more than I think in any other writing style is how much bravery they need to craft their work. Poetry shreds you when you craft a piece, and one can tell that in this work, Kaur bared her soul, and the souls of many people. The book is separated into two sections, and I enjoyed reading both. They are very reminiscent of Rupi Kaur's work, and I found especially the shorter poems are very striking. All in all, I give this work 3 stars.
It's been so long since I've read a poetry book, and I'm glad I picked this one! I loved it! I found myself relating to a lot of the poems and they were all so well written!
This was an interesting book of poetry and prose. it's divided in two parts. And personally, I enjoyed the first half- The Battles of Life more. I did like parts of the second half, such "...you didn't tell me I was beautiful but kissed my scars,' loc. 784. However, some poems seem to ramble on without clearly expressing what the speaker wants to convey. But in the part The Battles of Life, one of my favorites is "After a fight, he devoured HATE that night... ~ the vile self-implanted torture loc. 333. Check it out, and decide for yourself what you think of this poetry, as I said, I liked some of the poems in this book.
This is a book of poetry, the author of which reached out to me to review. I read this mostly in one sitting, and I found the poems to be relatable, which is good. The grammar and spelling are not the best at parts, and some of the word choices are awkward, but it kept coming back to the fact that most of the poems hit home for me pretty hard and I think would for most people. It was a decent effort, and I think the poet will definitely only improve with experience.
This book is a gem !! I enjoy reading modern poetry and this is one of the best books I've read in this category. What I like the most about this book is that it touches a variety of topics unlike other modern poetry books which focus only on one or two topics. Moreover the points are made in a very subtle and simple way and yet they hit you hard and make you think. This book did not just make me think but it gave me crucial advise as well as filled me up with motivation. I also liked how this book was kept short and the author's no nonsense style of writing. I look forward to reading more books from this author and I definitely recommend this book.
