This book needs some editing to remove extraneous commands.
I first picked up this book when my kate husband had dementia. Stuart Cantle was quite well known for his shanty singing round Bristol in the early 1970's. He asked me to collect akl his songs into a book for the family; by then he could no longer read and write. I purchased this book to help me. The introduction and explanatory chapters are quite good. It soon becomes obvious that RR Terry has no good opinion of folk song collectors. Writing in 1921 he almost dismisses Cecil Sharp and Ralph Vaughan Williams as charlatans! Reading the book is difficult because there are periodic commands to ,listen, which made me wonder if it was originally conceived as a lecture ir talk on shanties? It is alsi littered with the words eighths and sixteenths which are totally irrelevant.
