Michael Green invites us to join him on the journey of a lifetime of Christian ministry. From his conversion to the present day, he recounts times of fruitfulness and failure, and points to those people and ideas that have shaped and inspired him. But this is not just an autobiographical account, for he also reflects on crucial issues for today's church and world. In an inspiring conclusion, he sets forth a vision of hope for the future of the worldwide community of God. 'One of the great Christian warriors of this age, my friend Michael Green has a lifetime rich in Christian wisdom to share with the world.' Charles W. Colson, Prison Fellowship Ministry 'Michael Green has an enviable gift for making you think, squirm, laugh and get real all at the same time, and his review of his full and fruitful life runs true to form. This is vintage Green.' J. I. Packer, Regent College 'Few people have had such a variety of gifts, and such a range of experiences, as Michael Green. So he is able to evaluate firsthand many different ministries, movements and controversies. His views are always forthright, often humorous, sometimes mischievous (as he admits), but never lacking in thoughtfulness or generosity.' John Stott
Edward Michael Bankes Green, known as Michael Green, was a British theologian, Anglican priest, Christian apologist and author of more than fifty Christian books. He served as the Canon Missioner of Holy Trinity Church in Raleigh, North Carolina through 2007.
Michael Green is an extraordinary character and has an influential Christian ministry. In historical terms he would not be in same league as John Stott and Jim Packer when considering the revival of evangelicalism in the Church of England but he certainly has been someone who has been mightily used by God to bring Christian truth to many. He was a prolific author, theological education, parish minister and evangelist.
Characteristically he has not waited for someone else to write up his life but taken the initiative himself. So we have his account mingled with his own trenchant observations- a sort of apologia pro vita mea. There are traces of humbleness and references to times of difficulty (not least in his marriage) but this approach does always give him the 'last word'on a spectrum of issues and controversies. He is a man who believes he is generally right.
I was intrigued to read that he was a reluctant author; I am amazed at how many books of his I have read!
I wonder if a younger generation would look at Green's life and ministry - especially the earlier part - as judge as belonging to a bygone age. That would be a pity. The work that he and his generation did for the Gospel changed the face of the Church of England.
Brilliant book. Excellent analysis of the church in the UK, and what will be needed in the years ahead from a wise and godly leader. Recommended reading for all ministers.
EDIT - 2ND READ 2024
Still a brilliant book - the issues are beginning to change, from when Michael wrote this - but the need for vibrant churches that are evangelistic remain exactly the same - so thankfuk for his wisdom and ministry being recorded on paper
