This was a damn good book. I am glad that i stuck with this series. In just a few hours I consumed this book. I loved the companion bond, the jade bears, and the vassal bit. The hero while very weak compared to everything he encountered, was very crafty in how he dealt with his enemies. There's really only a couple of complaints i have about this. Everytime there is a battle there is a massive amount of experience points, and yet the leveling is so slow. My next issue is that the next book is not out yet, and I'm mad about that. How dare you Mr. Vider, introduce a new piece of mind candy for the masses and not bring a steady supply?

Great, wish it was longer

This was better than book 1. A prime example of a good litrpg. Well written, with many of the little things noted without becoming cumbersome. Cant wait for book 3, will be following author. Reminded me of The land by aleron kong series but without the harshness.

Eventually MC wins everything?

I really wanted to like this story but here's the deal. Every scenario... MC miraculously tapped into one of the hundreds, it seemed, of possible abilities or skills....and just bought it and won the day. He always had access to whatever he needed and just activated it . His precious bear friend conveniently could simply " swim through the earth". Literally, dive into the ground and swim in it like it was a lake. Just so happened it was one of their long forgotten abilities. Very convenient for hiding. And on and on in it went. When he needed water, just activate ice spell. Voila. Halfway through he had a list of spells, skills, and abilities that was 4 pages long. There was no suspense. Any skill you could possibly dream of he could simply call upon it. He had only been in the world for a month! Telekinesis, beast bonding , fire , ice, healing, speaking with his mind to men, woman, animal, shaking the earth...you name he could do it. At one point he and 2, yes 2, woefully under powered accomplices, defeated a force of 195 warriors and 12 shamans\ mages....I think the quote was" and then, the battle was over"...of course it was. Blah!!! 40% in...unreadable. Too bad. I think it had a decent premise.

I have received an eARC of this book from the author and this is my voluntary review.

This is the second (and impatiently awaited) volume in the adventures of Kylan on Crota.

Here Kylan must brave the labyrinth bellow Crota to escape from that domain. The story is fast paced, with lots of actions, and we get to meet various actors in the game and learn a bit more about the world and the gods.

All in all a very enjoyable read, and I'm looking forward (impatiently) for the next part.

I'm going to start off by saying I enjoyed this book, especially the fact that it is more than twice the length of the first one. It does meander a bit but with the name and theme of the book and the fact that it happens in most rpg's when actually playing them it isn't too much and is still enjoyable. There are also several points where you just get page after page of stat sheets which will be more than a little overwhelming when the audiobook comes out but in the kindle version it's easily skipable. While we do get plenty of new secondary characters we don't really get much back story on the main character or most of the secondary ones but we get a decent amount of world building and lore from the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Overall it's a good book and I look forward to the next one.

4 Beware The Holy Fire Stars

The Labyrinth is the second installment into The Gods’ Game LitRPG series by Rohan M. Vider.

Yay! So many questions answered. In these pages we delve deeper into the mysteries of the game and prison that is Myelad. Unearthing dwarven enchanters, secret essence wells, golems, vassals, and the inner workings of Crota and the undead that inhabit it.

World:
So intricate! Lots and lots of fun and exiting beasties. Convoluted politicking. Bickering gods. Webs and webs of goals and machinations, tangling and falling upon each other.

The writing:
An ever increasing and annoying amount of player logs. As he gets more exp and items the lists grow and grow. Taking up pages and pages. Not being able to remember the minutiae anyways, I mostly skipped over it.

Character:
All the growth. Makes some friends. Builds his dismal pool of allies. Overcomes past trauma. Advances as a leader. Learns to adjust to the dangerous atmosphere of his new home.

I hope we learn more of Their Brotherhood’ soon. And perchance that Mirien will come to be a future ally, as well. I am on the fence about Sara, I wonder if she will turn against her benefactor later when Irya’s plans for Kyran come to light. Whatever they are. And what hidden class Kyran has access to as a Friend to the Bears? Will he be able to hold Deepholm and Durn Duruhl? Will the dwarves ally with him? Are all of the gods such fonts of evil? What does Kyran and co.’s future hold outside of the labyrinth and Crota?

Kyran needs to go through the labyrinth to get free. Shocker - he didn't actually die at the end of the first book. Now he's slowly but surely collecting allies to help him along the way, including one that will open a unique class for him. He just has to make his way out of the labyrinth

good intriguing story, too many stat pages.

I enjoy the story immensely, but I can’t say much for the MC. I believe the MC has flashes of brilliance, but sometimes he does not seem very bright. For example, the MC has played video games before and should realize that in order to gain levels you have to fight and grind your characters. But he spends most of the book evading conflict that does not help his party to grow. He only fights when he has to. There seems to be a cap of at least level 99. He has only reached 20, I believe the progression is a little bit too slow. Wish I could like this character more but the reason I’m reading it is because the story is somewhat intriguing. The other problem too many stat pages statistics should only be used when characters have major growth. If you want to read, a real good, lit, RPG, this I direct to the author, look at defiance of the fall or he who fights with monsters, these books, show how to use stats properly. they gave you a real great story without padding pages with statistics. The MC also need some more character growth. Going on to read the next book.

This came very close to 'Did not like' for me. What drove the rating so low?

1. Characters. They're just dull and typical. Dialogue is mundane. Naivety abounds.
2. Game mechanics. They're contradictory and broken (as is often the case with LitRPGs). We're first told that physical combat is not completely level dependent. Then we see the case of low level beings unable to even hit another being 10 levels higher than them. Fine, I thought, if thats how the author wants to make it.
Few chapters later, the MC and gang are easily able to land hits and kill someone 20 levels higher, and at the end Thats just batshit crazy.
3. The MC keeps trying to avoid trouble, and yet is constantly running into it. Its like the author is torn between showing how noble the MC is by not attacking everything in his path, and yet wants to make him level up as much as he can.
4. The number of times a right skill is unlocked for the situation is hilarious.

Overall it was not for me.

I agree with a lot of the other 5 star reviews. This was a great story with a lot of obstacles that had to be thought out. The team couldn't just barrel their way through. It didn't read like a dungeon crawl.
I wish other books would take note from this adventure.
If I had one criticism, would be the extra verbage for the descriptions after they have been explained.
I feel if you have described it once, you don't need to keep repeating the same description. I like the condensed version of the player info, there is so much and some of it is not needed.
Possible Idea would be to have a super condensed version of mentioning what is new or has changed.
If he learned a new spell, then mention that as new. You can always mention the full list of all his characteristics, changes and spells later. Or after a big rest.

Just an observation, I loved the book and can't wait to adventure with him and the team in his new life on this world.

A good dungeon crawl.

Given that they were in an isolated region the amount of rare and legendary creatures in the labyrinth made some sense but it felt like you should have had more common or uncommon creatures. My biggest complaint was early on in book 2 you hinted that the mc had been abused growing up, yet in book 1 you said he was a street kid that was caught and "adopted" by a kindly grocer. Raised up as his son and introduced to RPGs. I got around that thought by thinking it might have happened before he was adopted but that was a big break in immersion. There were some issues with stats not adding up but it's a good enjoyable book I strongly recommend it

Over too soon, more please!

I sped through this book like the lead car at the Indy 500. I liked the pacing and plot. The characters weren't as deep as I would hope for but they were enjoyable. I feel as though there is so much latent potential in the world Mr. Vider has written that I want five books rather than just one to explore in. My only real gripe was that the introduction was really hard to follow and I had to reread good chunks of book one to reorient myself with the characters this book starts with. I'm eagerly looking forward to book the nonetheless. Hopefully sir Rohan takes the time to make it truly expansive

The second book solves some of the complains I had about the first.

It's still mostly standard LitRPG tropes, with a few good twists. The story progresses in the right direction, the peripheral action is handled well. My newest reproach would be the arrival of base-building elements, which the first book of the series didn't hint at. Still, it's mostly background/incidental, so it's not too big an addition. Plus, I like base building anyway.

Looking forward to the realization that the God's Game was never intended to be balanced, since Eld had... different goals. Hope M. Vider doesn't take too long to bring the next book.

Dropped 37% in. All this build-up in the first book, and its direction looked great. This one's full of contradictions, on-demand-spell library (which was supposed to take time to at least use but became instant real quick), and pointless repetition, mainly through showing all the game-like interfaces, then repeating what was in it in the next paragraph. Just... why? Also, dialogue got weird as soon as the protagonist got vassals. He became all high-and-mighty, despite him not even initially liking the idea of binding others to him.

Slow start, but it got betterr

The man without the divine spark is proving to be a formidable foe to the gods. He is well on his way now, has made a few allies and completed a few quests. He has stubbornly stuck to his principals and managed to defeat a God's champion. He has even managed to get a God's true believer to forswear her allegiance and swear to him. Things are looking up for him. But he is surrounded by enemies and the malice of the gods. I am anxious to see where he goes from here.

Many puzzle pieces

This was a very enjoyable sequel to Crota. Kyran has many difficult choices to make in this tale. He acquires companions, unexpected acquisitions and becomes hunted by a myriad of people as he tries to fulfil quests along the way. Nothing is as it seems...my only complaint is that the stats tables are too long, five pages is a bit much. If they could be greatly condensed, it would be perfect.

Buena lectura

Much better than the first volume

I read the two volumes back to back. After finishing the first I was very disappointed in the content and the ending as it was more of a prologue than real story arc. It would have been better to shorten the first book and incorporate it to the second one.
There is some pacing issue in this 2nd part as sometimes the story drags a bit but overall a solid and well written book.
I would read the next ones in the series.

I just finished all 5 books in the first arc of this series and I absolutely loved them all, lots of excitement and many interesting characters. I found the many battles to be interesting and the use of the characters spells and abilities well used. I also loved the involvement of many wild beasts in the story as well as many non-human characters. Very well written Rohan M. Vider, thank you for many hours of entertainment and I look forward to reading the second arc to this series!

Exciting, but is Kyran really considering why he’s doing things?

Wow, it’s rather amazing how petty and immature these gods are. How will Kyran handle being outside Crota and the Labyrinth? Is there really any purpose in him leaving though? With the Labyrinth being his stronghold, and the source of his power, what are his intentions on the outside? He already knows that he’s not likely to find allies…

Book two

Mistakes: None found
Plot: The quest to escape the goes trap continues. Lots of fighting.
The random seeming placement of the game data sheets is annoying and seemingly used to bump up the page count.
Characters: The MC grows stronger and adds some likable, but not fully developed allies.
8/10 over use of the game data sheets dropped this books ranking.

Why Leave the Labyrinth?

After reading the book I wonder why he would leave? Not going to spoil the plot in the review but if you secured a base - why leave for the unknown? (Beside quests which can’t be more rewarding then your life) The MC’s stupid decision making soured an otherwise good book for me.

Favorite Line: n/a

Wonderfully exciting LitRPG adventure that picks up right from the end of book one. With the MC leveling and gaining companions, more monsters and creatures attacking and the ire of the Gods, the fighting was described perfectly, the characters were well developed and interesting and best of all was his bonded partner. He was my favorite. Looking forward to book three. Recommended.

Superb 2nd in the series

Loved this and couldn’t put it down. Very well written with well balanced characters and a great setting and storyline. New characters added have only improved the story and the MC is evolving nicely and doesn’t seem OP.

I look forward to plenty more in this series 😁

I Hate "Crunchy"

"Crunchy" means page after page after page wasted on the minutia of character sheets in a game environment that delberately allows "creative" low levels to kill high levels. It gets worse in this volume whwn the MC gets a party and even more pages are wasted on unneeded details. Twice a book is enough, at beginning and end. Otherwise decent story so far.

Should have just combined both books

Definitely a much better book than the first in every way. You are not lost in the details. Events actually progress. You get some nice character development.

If you were on the fence after the first one, you should definitely read this one.

I feel like the two books should be combined and re-released.

Bad writing gone worse.

The combat is horrible, the writing is lazy and the characters act in a manner that defies rationale. The addition of abilities whenever they are needed and forcing through an ability at the last second are crutches that quickly become tiresome. This needs to be scrapped and restarted with a proper concept and outline. A failure all round.
