I thought it was a well written novel with characters well defined. However, I thought Edmund and Joanna's love should have been more emphasized than it did in the novel. I did think that Christopher's character did show how much he changed through the course of the novel. It showed his good and bad side. I did love the children's involvement written into the novel. They played a large part of getting Edmund to realize he was in love with Joanna.
I did enjoy seeing Joanna as a governess for the children and secretary for Edmund. She cared for the family as if it were her own.
I did enjoy reading the novel.

Joanna Warrick stepped out of the carriage as Jenkins, the butler, came out the front door to lead her to the children waiting in the school room. She was nervous and wanted to turn around and go home, but there was no home to go back to anymore. Jenkins took her to meet the children, reviewing their names and ages for her. Christopher, closer in age to Edmund, was away in the Army right now. Of those she would teach, Patience is sixteen, Samuel is nine, and Amy is five. The children asked awkward questions about her father, which made her uncomfortable. Her father was a Baron who had invested his money in a bank which collapsed. Shortly thereafter, he died of a heart attack. With no money, Joanna had to take the governess job, no longer a lady of society. She was very embarrassed, but she worked with the children to find out where they needed to begin with their learning. As she chatted with Samuel, he told her they had gone through 10 governesses already because Edmund didn’t like them, and it had only been a year and 3 months since their parents had died! This wasn’t sounding like a long-lasting career!

Edmund, the new Earl of Kelt, was on his way home from the London office. It was difficult taking over for his father since he was young at 23 and their loyal customers were concerned about his inexperience. But he was expanding the business and doing his very best at negotiating with the customers.

Edmund watched outside the partially open school room door to see how Joanna taught the children. She never raised her voice and was gentle in any mild reprimand or correction. She spent time with each of them, helping and guiding. It was obvious each was responding well to her. When he asked them at dinner what they thought, they all expressed pleasure at having her as their governess. And he himself could not find any fault in what he had observed.

When Christopher Hardwicke, Edmund’s unhappy brother, returned home from the Army, he made life difficult and continued to cause trouble. His efforts to cause a problem between Joanna and Patience almost caused a scandal. He made Edmund doubt Joanna. Will she be able to regain his trust? Is there a possibility of any kind of future together? Will Christopher ever grow up and realize how important family is?

This was a wonderful book that dealt with the theme of loss and overcoming all that loss entails, each person in their own way. Edmund and Joanna were both strong characters and very much took on their responsibilities and helped the younger family members to adjust and thrive. The story line was good, well-paced, and well-written. I definitely recommend this one. Despite misunderstandings, the reader doesn’t lose hope that the family will come together and be stronger than they were.

Young Lady, in reduced circumstances due to her father’s death, finds a job & family as a governess.

SETTING: A heartwarming story of Joanna Warrick, a young Lady brought low by her father’s bankruptcy and early death, seeking employment as a governess to 3 young siblings. What they have in common: the loss of parents. Both the mother and father of the children died of an infectious disease over a year ago, and they are now being raised by their eldest brother, Edmund Kelt, the Earl of Hartwicke, whose standards are very high. When Joanna arrives on the scene, she finds out they have already gone through 10 governesses who were dismissed by the Earl, and is prepared by the butler for the need to take strong charge of these strong-willed youngsters. With a bit of trepidation, she begins her employment.
We have a young woman suffering a sudden drop in society due to business failure of her father, facing 3 children who lost both parents whose vigilant brother expects her to raise his siblings to his exacting standards. What could possibly go wrong?! Especially when the 2nd son (a soldier whose commission was bought by his brother to instill discipline into this renegade’s life), returns with a fellow soldier who catches the eye of 16 year old Patience who has led a life sheltered from society up until this point. Both of the soldiers are without other prospects, as they are not the firstborn/only son in their family. They have yet to appreciate (or care) about the results of their actions toward young women, who take their attentions as serious offers with the object of marriage. This is a recipe for disaster to the quiet household of the Earl of Hartwicke.

CRITIQUE: This is an interesting twist to the trope of a Lady brought low by the actions of her father, now finding employment as a governess. Not only does she step down from a higher role in society, but she also has a 16 year old female charge who is anxious to step out into society and enjoy male attention. How she navigates the rapids of this river she is sailing on is quite interesting, and is able to hold the readers’ attention to the end. As a clean Regency Romance, readers of all ages will enjoy this book.

The responsibilities of being a governess to the Earl of Kelt are endless. Joanna Warrick had her hands full with Lady Patience. Only sixteen, and she has run off with LT. Jasper Rivers. This is the second incident of Lady Patience testing her new governess. Joanna promised to keep a secret for Patience, but now. She is in trouble .Edmund Hardwicke has enough unexpected responsibilities with his siblings, Amy,Samuel and Patience. Ten different governesses Edmund has gone through till he finally thinks Joanna is the right one, and the children are very fond of her. Christopher Hardwicke,Edmund's younger brother who lives life to fullest. He does a fine job of creating a lot chaos in the house everytime he visits. Joanna is not fond of him, and his ways. Edmund and Joanna went after Lady Patience, and brought her back home without scandal.
Christopher asked Joanna for her hand in marriage, but she turned him down. Edmund was upset at the news. He rides off on his stallion gone for several days, which worries everyone back home. Sickness has taken over their house once more. This makes Edmund feel regretful for his actions, being away when they needed him most. Edmund understands now what he must do, and tells Joanna how he feels about her. He could never live without her so he asked her for her hand in marriage. Alot of emotions happening, romance, and such strong characters who bring everyone together in the end. A Definite Must Read!!

Joanne Warrick arrived at a grand home with a heavy heart in her chest and wanted nothing more than to tell the driver to take her back home but she had no home her father had died totally bankrupt. She was at this house to become the children's governess. The Butler Jenkins escorted her to the school room and told her that she was in control because they are children and if they misbehave you must take him in hand you don't do see that as a weakness and you be gone the way of the last governess. He asked if she had been informed of their names and she said yes they are patient who is 16 Samuel who is nine and Amy who is five and Jenkins told her she was correct and then he left her there at the door to go in she tested the children and what they should know to see what they actually did know. Lady patients was not happy with her sign in huffing the Joanna continued with her testing and blamed their brother Edmund for the reason they had had 10 governess is since her parents died which was 15 months ago when Edmund got home he sent for Joanna to dine with him. Joanna stepped into the dining room and there she met Edmund Kelt, the Earl of Hardwicke. He told her she wouldn't be eating with the family she would take her pills the servants and he expected the children to be on a strict schedule. To find out what happens to Joanna and all the trials and tribulations that she goes through you have to read the book. It's a good book...

Joanna Warrick's father, Baron Warrick, lost all his money due to a bad business deal and shortly after died from a heart attack. She is no longer in high society and must find work. She looks for work as a governess. She is hired by Edmund Hardwicke the young Earl of Kelt as governess to his three youngest siblings. He has taken on the role of father to his 4 siblings after his parents died due to an illness. He sent Christorpher to the army. He has been running his father's business. He is critical and has fired 10 governesses already.
This is a roller coaster of twists and turns, lies, mystery, drama, the importance of family, romance. Will Christropher grow up, take responsibilty, stop always causing trouble and become the man Edmund hopes him to be? Will Joanna hang on to her hopes and dreams? Will Edmund realize he loves Joanna? If he does, will he let society tell him what he can and can't do? What will Joanna do?
This is a well constructed plot and very well written. Characters are fleshed out. The story held me in it's spell all the way through to the end. I enjoyed this book so much.

“Young lady from good family seeks a position as governess. Well-educated in French, pianoforte, deportment, drawing, history, use of the globes, and other areas.”

So begins the story of the downfallen Joanna Warrick, forced to seek work after her father lost the family fortune, had a heart attack and passed away, removing her family from society. She is hired by Edmund Hardwicke, Earl of Kelt, as governess to his three youngest siblings after his parents died of illness and he sent his oldest sibling Christopher to the army in hopes that he’ll stop acting out and grow up.

Ten governesses in a year! His criticism of the teachers has not been unnoticed. He almost makes it eleven after Joanna’s first day. However, the children stepped in for her, knowing little more than they like her. Trust builds slowly.

Edmund’s oldest sibling,. Edmund begins to fall for Joanna despite the ton’s snub. Will he still go after her after learning to love and trust his own feelings? As I’ve come to expect from Abby Ayles, this is a well written story with mysterious twists and turns that lead to a well written ending. Highly Recommended 5/5

Enjoyable Read

Another enjoyable read from Abby Ayles, the book was well written and interesting.
The main female character Joanne Warrick was a young lady thrown on hard times through no fault of her own, and was very frightful of loosing her job as governess to 2 young children and one petulant 'teenager' The head of the household Edmund Lord Kelt to my mind swung between needing a big hug and boxed ears. He was only a young man going on ancient by his actions and thoughts but his life was not easy, he had newly inherited his tittle following his parents sudden death, and was also trying to run a family business with older peers trying to take advantage of him, whilst also trying to control his headstrong, tear away brother and his petulant teenage sister, Miss Warrick was a breath of fresh for him, if only he would let her do her job. The story flowed at quite a pace with Miss Warrick being most of the time in a state of angst, whilst wrestling her feelings for his Lordship who was also in a similar state whilst recovering from an injury. All in all the story was enjoyable.
I received the book as an Advanced Reader Copy and freely give a truthful and unbiased review.
I thoroughly recommend this book.

Secret Dreams of a Fearless Governess by Abby Ayles is the sweet story of Joanna Warrick, the daughter of a Baron who recklessly lost all is money and she is forced to find employment as a governess and Edmund the eldest of five siblings and the son who inherited from his father and was now responsible for all of them: Christopher, for whom he had bought a military commission; Patience, who at 16 could be very unpleasant and believed herself too old for a governess, Amy; and sickly little Samuel. Joanna slowly proves her worth to the family, winning over all of them with her quiet sensible ways and ladylike demeanor. Even Edmund is attracted to her, not realizing her noble blood, believes her out of his reach.

I enjoyed this book tremendously. The plot was not outrageous; the characters were realistic, especially the teenage Patience (some things never change). The plot revolved around failures to communicate, which is pretty much real life. Ayles does a nice job moving the plot forward at a reasonable pace and making the reader really cheer for the characters without rolling their eyes over nonsensical behavior. I enjoyed the book and recommend it highly.

I received a free ARC of this book. All opinions expressed herein are strictly my own.

This was a really beautiful story! When Joanne’s father died leaving the family with nothing she must find a job as a governess. Edmund, the Earl of Kent lost both is parents to an illness that nearly took his baby brother, Samuels life too. Now he is in charge of this two sister and two brothers. He hires Joanne and the adventure begins. He works too hard and is aloof to her but she see he truly loves his siblings immensely and want to do his best for them. His brother, Christopher comes home offer from the army and causes chaos before he leaves! Unfortunately it took another sickness to strike before Christopher realizes how much he loves his family and what a burden he’s been, he also realizes the overwhelming responsibility his brother had to take on without warning. This is a book about a family trying to move on past grief! The characters were individually different and their own persons based on age. It was an endearing book which the love amongst the characters shines through brightly. It also had some adventure and romance and plenty of mischief! I highly recommend this entertaining book!

Dreams do come true.

I really enjoyed the storyline. Two people brought together by loss. The heroine Joanna was forced to take employment after her father Baron Warrick’s heart failure and lack of funds. And after the untimely death of his parents we have our Hero Edmond the new Earl of Kelt and surrogate father to his four siblings. In my opinion Edmond was trying to hard to be the best at both. He spent way to much time trying to find fault with Joanna. If they had just communicated a little more. Thank goodness they didn’t. I loved Joanna’s relationship with the younger children. And then we have Edmonds wayward brother Christopher who came through in the end. I hope he gets his own book as well as the eldest sister Patience.
This was a clean read and I recommend it highly it. This is my eighth book by Abby Ayles it will not be my last.

Edmund Hardwicke, the young Earl of Kelt, found himself in charge of his younger siblings when he lost his parents. After several governesses, Joanna Warrick arrives to become the new governess. Joanna became a governess when her father, a baron, lost his money and commits suicide, leaving his family heartbroken and destitute. When Edmund's younger brother, Christopher, arrives home, he comes determined to ruin his older brother and make him suffer. Will Joanna and Edmund be able to stop Christopher and his evil doings before it's too late? What about the love Joanna feels for Edmund? Will these two find everlasting love and happiness? I loved this book and the characters. Even though I was given a copy of this book by the author, it in no way influenced my opinion. This is my true and honest review. This is a clean and sweet book.

Dreamy

This was a very interesting story as it portrayed the plight of the young women who suddenly were left with no recourse but servitude wth the death of their parent, whether from illness or something other. Young women, if they were fortunate enough to have received a formal enough education , to be able to obtain positions as governesses in influential families. I noted that the mother had to receive money to be able to attend Joanna's wedding. It is regrettable that any dowry a woman brought to a marriage was then owned by the husband. I saw through this story that Edmund was able to forego that requirement. Thank you, Abby Sykes for another great story. Oh, by the way, without other indications, I believe the knees might have been Diphtheria, which had no known cure at that time.

This was originally reviewed on May 7, 2019, on Amazon Kindle.

Miss Warrick's family was ruined by her father losing their family fortune. Joanna put aside her hopes of finding a husband; she had no dowry or title to offer. She found work as a governess to 3 young children who had lost their parents to sickness leaving the eldest brother, Edmund, to take care of all of them and take over his father’s business. The children had had 10 governesses in the last 12 months; none passed muster with Edmund so when Joanna showed up, he was highly critical of her and nearly fired her after 1 day. She eventually won him over since the children adored her. There are several ups and downs and misunderstandings; however, they soon find out what they truly mean to each other.

After the death of his parents, Edmund is in need of a governess to care for two of his younger siblings. His third sibling, Christoper, is out to have fun with no care to the family name or reputation. Edmund sends Christopher off to the army in hopes that he will grow up. So far, it's not working.

Joanna must find a job to support herself. She takes the job as governess to Edmund's siblings. She adores the children and they come to love her, even if they are sometimes trouble. But will Christoper's actions or Edmund's doubts send her packing? Can an Earl and his governess learn to find love? Read this wonderful story by Abby Ayles and find out!

Joanna Warrick arrives at the home of Edmund Hardwicke the young Earl of Kelt, as governess to his three youngest siblings. He had sent his brother off to serve in the Army because he thought that it would help Christopher learn some discipline and make something of his life. When Christopher suspects that Edmund and Joanna are attracted to each other, he tries to come between them.
When the same debilitating sickness sweeps through the household and Joanna and the three younger siblings are taken ill while Edmund is off visiting the Haverham residence, Christopher steps up to help the staff take care of them.

A captivating story of the young Earl of Kelt, Edmund, and Joanna who has sought employment as the governess for his 3 younger siblings. As they both adapt to these new roles that life has placed upon them, can they possibly find a way to become stronger in their duties by seeking a HEA for each other in this newest book by Abby Ayles. Well defined characters that grab at your heart strings one moment and have you shaking your head the next. I would recommend this story to anyone who enjoys clean REGENCY romance.

Excellent story. Wonderful characters. The storyline was never lost and was well blended into the subplots along the way. I especially enjoyed the children's personalities. So realistic. Every feeling every emotion on display. The main romantic couple did not have a normal courtship. They did get to know each other on a personal level that lead them to deeper feelings. Complications occurred that brought our hero to his knees. He realized he loved his heroine and she loved him in return. A delightful story, entertaining always keeping you turning page after page. I highly recommend it and look forward to the sequel "A Daring Captain for Her Loyal Heart".

Wow, what a roller coaster of emotions, drama, suspense, excitement with lots of twists and turns. Each person has their own separate unique personality that blends in so well with the story lines. It is so enjoyable to read and see what happens next. It is an edge of your seat read. It is highly recommended. A family that has a lot of contention and needs fixed. A governess who comes in and is in the middle of it and has feelings for the older brother. A younger brother that is causing as much trouble as he can. What a mess. Good Storyline

I always enjoy Abby Ayles books but this is not one of my favourites. The storyline is about Joanna who became a governess in Earl of Kelt’s household (Edmund).

I enjoyed the budding romance between Joanna and Edmund, it feels real and ended quite well. But, I felt there was something missing in both characters but still can’t figure out what it was.

All in all, Abby pours her heart into her books and the storyline showed that.

I really enjoyed reading this book! The Governess was a lady who lost her father and so came upon hard times. The gentleman had also lost his parents and had four younger siblings to care for. During the course of her employment, they both fell for the other but did not realize it until she fell sick with the fever that killed his parents. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read romance!

A very delightful story. I loved that Joanna was so selfless as to treating the children in her charge in a very loving and ladylike fashion. The children loved her for it and were happy to have her. They were even more happy when they discovered she was to become their sister by marrying their brother Edmond. Their relationship was not without difficulties. However, the difficulties were finally ironed out which made my face sore with the wide smile I had on my face.

I love how Edmund and Joanna's story worked out. They are a great couple, even if Edmund was a jerk at first. I love her 3 charges. Everything about this story was sweet and perfect. There wasn't much drama except for a couple of misunderstandings. I'm so happy that everything worked out between Christopher and Edmund. I'm glad Christopher didn't try anything crazy and become psychotic like other books. I love this author

A Delightful Story

The governess has become one due to family disgrace. The family she is working for has suffered loss of both parents. It is not long before a strong rapport is established between them. The governess shows her strength and capacity to love many times. This is a well executed story that I greatly enjoyed.
