A sexy, sun-soaked tale about a tail-wearing girl who makes a lot of waves. Perfect for fans of Lauren Layne, Meghan Quinn, and Christina Lauren.
Ocean-loving Kyra Goodwin had to give up her dream of becoming the female Jacques Cousteau in order to take care of her father and brother, but being a mermaid at the Cape Cod Aquarium is pretty fintastic as far as alternative careers go.
Of course, life as a half-fish/half-woman isn’t all sunken treasure and Ariel twirls. Kyra has to deal with perpetually pruney fingers, eyes irritated by saltwater, and bratty kids on the daily, plus her glam alter ego can make dating really weird. (So many men have pervy siren-of-the-sea fantasies!) When she meets hunky surfer Cade, and he’s into her without knowing what she does for a living, Kyra thinks she’s finally won the romance lottery.
Unfortunately, Kyra’s plans for a carefree summer of catching waves with her new boyfriend run aground when Sea Star Beach, a place that holds great sentimental value for her, is taken over by a big-city developer who wants to build an exclusive resort. Kyra’s crusade to save her beloved beach threatens both her job and her relationship with Cade as does her growing closeness with her irresistibly broody merwrangler, Declan, whose precocious daughter is intent on playing matchmaker.
When a new family drama arises just as Kyra receives an offer that would turn her greatest desire into reality, she’s torn. Will she do what’s expected of her, or dive in and follow her heart?
An avid reader and writer, Tracie Banister has been scribbling stories since she was a child, most of them featuring feisty heroines with complicated love lives like her favorite fictional protagonist Scarlett O'Hara. Her work was first seen on the stage of her elementary school, where her 4th grade class performed an original holiday play that she penned (Like all good divas-in-the-making, she, also, starred in and tried to direct the production.) Her dreams of authorial success were put on the backburner when she reached adulthood and discovered that she needed a "real" job in order to pay her bills. Her career as personal assistant to a local entrepreneur lasted for 12 years. When it ended, Tracie decided to follow her bliss and dedicate herself to writing full-time. Her debut novel, the Hollywood-themed BLAME IT ON THE FAME, was released in January, 2012. And she's following that up with the fun summer read, IN NEED OF THERAPY.
Kyra is a mermaid, not in the mythical sense, she works at the local aquarium. She is the head mermaid and takes her job very seriously. She is also very passionate about marine life and the beautiful cove town that she grew up in. Alongside the mermaids are merwranglers, these are the guys who assist the mermaids in and out of the tanks. Mermaid tails are tailor made to fit each girl so once those puppies are on they stick like a vacuum.
The merwranglers are all pretty buff looking guys, they have to be strong to carry the girls around and they do get quite up close and personal with each other. However, relationships between them are strictly forbidden. There was that one night that Kyran and Declan had an oopsie but that was under the haze of alcohol and neither of them ever speak about it now. Doesn’t mean Kyra doesn’t occasionally think about it.
When Kyra gets wind of a new resort being built in her town that will take away the rights of the locals to access her favourite beach, she decides to take on the developer. She is not alone, there is a committee of people who are determined to not just sit back and let money win over what is best for the people in her town. After stressing about it and trying to figure out how she is going to make enough noise for the right people to hear her, she decides that a sunset yoga class is just what she needs. This is where she meets Cade, the gorgeous once pro-surfer.
Cade has abs on top of abs, he is tanned, sexy and very charming. Kyra is completely smitten and she soon finds out that he tastes delicious too. She has lots of fun with Cade but there is not much depth to his character. She also begins to spend more time with Declan outside of work and she loves how easy their friendship is. Cade travels a lot for his job so she spends most weekends without him but she enjoys the time they have.
The more time she spends with Declan, she finds herself comparing the two men in her mind. Cade is probably less a relationship sort of guy and more of a right now person. Declan is a dedicated family man and very protective of Kyra. When things start to go tits up at work and with the resort development protests, she begins to see more clearly the character of each guy. She never could have prepared herself for what was to come next…
I’ve had this sitting on my kindle for far too long and finally got a chance to read this over the lockdown. It was the perfect story to read during this time as it was light, funny and romantic.
Every time I think I found my favorite Tracie Banister novel, she writes a new one to take its place. So right now In the Swim of Things is my favorite of her novels, until she manages to blow me away again next time!
In the Swim of Things was non-stop fun from start to finish. It kept me engaged the entire time and I couldn't get enough of it! Kyra is easily lovable and seems like she'd be an awesome person to have in my corner. I love how she's so good with kids too. While she can be impulsive and is quick to anger, it fits in with her witty and fiery personality. I enjoyed getting to know her throughout the story and I was always cheering her on, even when she did some things she probably shouldn't have.
It was interesting to learn about what is involved with being a professional mermaid. I could tell that the career was well-researched though. The sexual tension between Kyra and Declan was off the charts, even though she was with equally attractive Cade. This is all thanks to Tracie's great use of characterization. It was very easy to visualize people and places. I could practically smell the Cape Cod beach air. There are some steamy moments throughout the novel, which are thoroughly enjoyable.
I loved this novel in its entirety and recommend it to anyone who wants a flirty, romantic, funny, and entertaining story. This is the perfect summer novel, even though it could be read any time of year!
Movie casting suggestions: Kyra: Meghann Fahy (I love her on The Bold Type and while I was watching an episode, I immediately thought she'd be perfect!) Cade: Liam Hemsworth (This casting was suggested in the novel and I couldn't resist.) Declan: Finn Wittrock Gina: Chloe Bridges Sean: Kendall Ryan Sanders
Love the subtle romance aspect of this story! After her father had an accident at work that left him unable to work, Kyra returned home from college and took on the role of provider and parent to her younger brother. Years later, she has resigned herself into her job but ended up working out because she loves working as a mermaid at the local aquarium and takes her job there quite seriously. It’s there that she meets Declan and has a one-night stand, if you will, after his divorce, but things seem fine with them as they went right back to being friends. A while after that, Kyra meets Cade, a surfer who has recently relocated to town, and they start a relationship that Kyra really believes in, up until she finds out why he has relocated to town – his new job at the upcoming resort being built at her favorite beach. Determined to keep the beach public because it has so many memories of her childhood and her mother, she does anything and everything she can throughout the book to accomplish that – protests, fights and all. In somewhat of a twist for me in regards to the romance aspect in this story, Kyra finds out Cade is not who she thought he was and their relationship was not what she thought, and she uses that to her advantage while also realizing who her actual feelings are for! Overall, I really enjoyed this book, although I feel it was a little bit drawn out and longer than it should have been. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There are some funny scenes that had me laughing. I loved that Kyra worked as a mermaid for an aquarium and put on a show. I couldn’t imagine being under water all the time like she does. Kyra is such a good person who is always there for her family and friends. She loves the sea and all its creatures, and does all she can to protect them. All the mermaids she works with do not have the same work ethic as she does, so there are some trying times at work. She does become good friends with Declan at work who is her handler. I loved Declan’s daughter when she came to visit. Kyra meets retired surfer Cade that she really falls for. It is funny as there was something I didn’t like about him from the beginning. Kyra was with Cade on most of her time off when he was in town. There are protests that Kyra gets involved with, some rich privileged people, and some trouble at work. The story is very interesting, and I strongly encourage you to read the book. I was given a copy of the book and voluntarily wrote a review.
"In the Swim of Things" by Tracie Banister was cute, sweet, and laugh-out-loud funny with likable, relatable characters. I especially liked Kyra, who was a great main character. She was feisty and independent, stood up for what she believed in no matter what, and loved her family and friends fiercely. Even though Kyra had to give up her dream of going to college to become the "female Jacques Cousteau," I loved that she forged her own path and still found a way to be happy in a job she loved. (Plus, she's still young - there's still time for school if she wants to go back in the future.)
I had no idea there were such things as professional mermaids, so it was fascinating for me to learn more about Kyra's job. It kind of took me back to when I was a little girl and loved "The Little Mermaid." However, I did guess some of the twists and turns the plot would take pretty early on, but it was still a fun ride getting to the end of the book and seeing how things would turn out for Kyra and her friends and family.
Overall, this was a great beach read for the summer, and I really enjoyed it. I would absolutely read more of Ms. Banister's work in the future.
*Review copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
My biggest complaint when I read romance is that the will they/won’t they goes on too long for my taste. And I’m not just waiting for the romp in the bedroom/garden/water because if that was the case I would just pick up more erotica. I’m looking for the relationship adventures; the dates, meeting the friends/family, seeing how well they treat each other, etc… and In the Swim of Things by Tracie Banister, she really delivers all of those events that I look for in a romance, including humor, which was such a wonderful bonus!
Kyra and Declan have a one night stand, but he’s not in the right headspace so Kyra moves on. Which is awesome! No waiting around and she goes on to live her life while still being friends with Declan. Then she meets Cade. Here is where Banister fooled me a bit since I thought for sure Cade was going to be more involved in the development of the resort, but the amount that he was involved in happened to be perfect. Kyra realizes that Cade is involved with her sworn enemy, but they handle it well and they don’t let it simmer and ruin their relationship. What growns up acting like reasonable adults?!? That was so refreshing.
A lot more fun, sweet, and sexy things happen not only between Krya/Cade/Declan, but the other characters in the book which adds lots of wonderful layers to the novel. Plus, the world of professional mermaids and all the gorgeous costumes, underwater scenes, meet and greets, and party scenes that come along with that makes me want to be part of their world. Then there’s the humor, which I always love to find in a romance, is found in spades, especially when it comes to Slater.
I was really impressed with In the Swim of Things and I’m excited to read some of Banister’s other books including Izzy as Is, Mixing It Up, and Twin Piques.
In the Swim of Things is one of the best chick-lit books I’ve read in a long time. It’s funny, enjoyable, at times suspenseful, and most of all delightful. I’ve been a fan of the author’s books for awhile now, so when she offered me the opportunity to read her newest release, I didn’t hesitate. This is the best book Tracie has written to date.
The main character is Kyra, who has one of the best jobs I could ever imagine! She is a real life mermaid at the local aquarium. OK, so she’s not a real mermaid, but she dresses up and plays one. She has her own tail, mermaid make-up and performs amazing shows. I loved Kyra! While she may seem like a superficial, ditsy blonde, she is actually extremely smart, tenacious, with a heart made of gold. Still mourning the loss of her mother, she stops by weekly to cook amazing meals for her Pop and brother…making sure they are taken care of. And, when the local beach where she grew up is facing closure to the public, she goes into action doing everything in her power to try and prevent this from happening!
There’s a little bit of everything in this book. Of course, romance (the love triangle everyone loves!), friendship, humor, and emotions. While some parts were a little predictable, there were still plenty of twists and turns that kept me on my toes!
Overall, I give this book two VERY high thumbs up!! It’s the perfect book for the weekend read, or that beach getaway. Actually, it’s the perfect book for any time. Highly, highly recommend!!!
Kyra has changed her plans over the years, wanting to be a marine biologist, the female version of Jacques Cousteau. She now has taken over looking after her father and brother since her mother has died. She has also been working at the local aquarium and is now the head mermaid. This summer though there are changes coming her way. A new hotel is being built on the beach that is important to her and to her community, but now this corporation is saying that the beach will be private for their guests only. This is the beach where her mother took her when she was a little girl and where she first fell in love with the ocean. She does not want it to go away. Her best friend Gina is changing and she does not know why and this also makes her angry. She falls for a surfer dude Cade who she can’t believe is to go to be true and of course, he disappoints her eventually. Throughout her aquatic turmoil’s she is still wanting to find her happiness. Maybe she is looking for it in all of the wrong places and her happiness is right in her arms she just doesn’t know it yet. See what happens between Kyra, Cade and the Declan the man who helps in and out of the water. Will she win her fight against the big hotel? That also will be revealed. Her friend and roommate Gina was a bit much after a while and I would have dumped her in the ocean, but I know you need someone to bang on. Overall this was a fun book and the characters were good. Worth the read. Received this book from the author. Gave it 4stars. Follow us www.1rad-readerreviews.com
4.5 Star review In The Swim Of Things by Tracie Bannister
This is the second book I’ve read by Tracie Banister and I was captivated from start to finish.
The blurb really intrigued me. Kyra Goodwin works as a mermaid at Cape Cod Aquarium, what an unusual job to have. Her job makes it hard to meet men, not to mention taking care of her father and brother.
When Kyra meets Cade she is attracted to him and even better he has no idea what she does. However there is also the relationship she has with co worker Declan, whose daughter Amelia is determined to play matchmaker.
The characters and their jobs were unique and that added to the overall enjoyment of the story. There was humour, suspense, romance and it had a heart warming feel to it.
Kyra is smart, feisty and loyal. When a beach she loves is threatened Kyra does what she does best and morphs into action to help.
There were enough twists and turns to up the anti and I must say that Slater, the lorikeet, was an absolute hoot and had me cracking up.
The secondary characters were fabulous, particularly Aunt Joan who was hilarious and Amelia was such a sweetie.
I’m so sad this book is over. This was such a cute fun read. I will be honest, I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book the first couple chapters. However, the more I read, the more I found myself loving it. I ended up loving the characters. Kyra, the main character is a feisty, lovable, fun, quirky, scrappy, and relatable character. I found myself lapping up this story. Then, you have two male interests in this story (which I love myself a good love triangle). All of the characters (besides one or two - and you’ll find out when you read) are super likable and jump off the page. It’s not hard to imagine any of them being in your daily life because they seem that real.
I found myself just smiling as I was reading. I loved the world that the author created. This is definitely a fun summer read so don’t hesitate on picking this one up!
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was the perfect book for summer and I was particularly fascinated by the protagonist’s job as a mermaid. I love mermaids and this was such a fun book full of fun facts of what it is like to be a real life mermaid. The entire thing played out like a movie and it made me laugh out loud. I like that the protagonist is motivated by her love of preserving nature. I could identify with that. I had a great time reading this book.
This is the second book I’ve read of Ms. Banister’s and I was entertained from the beginning to the end. The cover is absolutely beautiful.
Kyra, who has had to adjust her educational plans of becoming a marine biologist to take care of her father and younger brother, is a true environmentalist and lover of all things ocean-related. She is fortunate to become the head mermaid at the Cape Cod Aquarium and I found it fascinating to learn all that’s involved with the dress, makeup, underwater shows, etc. It was funny that once she had her mermaid ‘tail’ on, she had to have someone carry her from place to place. You would think it would be awkward, and it was at times, but she had a handsome merwrangler, Declan, to haul her around.
She unexpectedly meets Cade, a previous professional surfer, on the beach and they hit it off right away. There wasn’t quite a love triangle between Kyra, Cade, and Declan but she was definitely attracted to both men.
Slater, the lorikeet, was just hilarious and the description of what he/she could do to a room and people was beyond description and quite funny.
I loved all of the characters except for Kyra’s roommate and co-worker, Gina. She was so irritating and obnoxious I could just pinch her head off! Declan’s aunt Joan was laugh-out-loud hilarious and his daughter, Amelia was so sweet. The story was one outrageous, hilarious, aggravating thing after another but Kyra takes it all in stride. The ending was quite sweet, sexy and sentimental and gave me my HEA.
I can often tell how much I'm enjoying a book by how much I think about getting back to it when I'm not reading. If I realize I've gone 2-3 days playing on my phone instead of reading, it's possible the book in question doesn't quite capture my attention. In contrast, for a week, every time I had to put my Kindle down, I was pissed because I was dying to get back to In the Swim of Things.
In fact, when my husband asked what I wanted to do for my first Mother's Day, I said, "I want to finish this book." Because I needed to know what happened, and I was getting very frustrated at only having 15-20 spare minutes a day to find out.
Kyra is delightful. I love chicklit where the main character has an interesting occupation, so you know I jumped all over this. (I didn't even know you could be a mermaid, but now I wish I could swim. And hold my breath for long periods of time. And apply makeup.) The plot's really interesting. I like that Kyra's working to solve problems for other people and not just herself, and I like that she takes initiative. The scenes at the aquarium are detailed and fascinating. The scenes elsewhere are just as well written. Kyra felt like an old friend, so it was a delight to watch her fall in love.
Such a fun book. I absolutely loved it. I wish I could read it again for the first time.
I've read all but one of the author's books and she never fails to entertain me. In the Swim of Things was no exception! Her characters were original and well-drawn, the storyline kept my interest the entire time, and the love triangle had the perfect amount of unpredictability and steam. I adored Kira, especially at the part (approximately 70% in) when she gave someone a well-deserved piece of her mind. I might have applauded...And her clothes! I covet her lavender boots in a big way.
One of the things I find most impressive about Banister's books is her fearlessness when it comes to using new settings/careers. From actors to therapists, pet psychics, accountants, chefs, and mermaids, from Hollywood to Miami, San Francisco, New York City, and now Cape Cod. I look forward to where she'll take us next.
A new Tracie Banister book is always a cause for celebration and IN THE SWIM OF THINGS does not disappoint!
Tracie creates such a vivid world for her characters--I felt like I was right there watching ocean-loving Kyra work as a mermaid at the Cape Cod Aquarium. Kyra is a leading lady you can’t help but root for and I was fully invested in her battle to save a beloved beach that has great sentimental value and, of course, in her journey to find Mr. Right.
I also really enjoyed the amazing cast of supporting characters. They each brought something to the story...some I loved and some I loved to hate!
IN THE SWIM OF THINGS has everything I'm looking for in a rom-com: It's funny and sexy, the love interests are swoon-worthy, and the story had me hooked from the first page to the last.
And the ending? No spoilers here, but it gave me ALL the feels. (It also left me with quite the book hangover.)
I highly recommend this novel if you’re a fan of smart and sexy romantic comedies and I’m eagerly awaiting Tracie’s next book!
I got this really nice message from Tracie Banister to review her book In the Swim of the Things and I'm more than happy that I read it! This story about Kyra and Cade and Sea Star Beach was so cute and really enjoyable! Awwww and let me swoon about Cade (the absolutely hot surfer) for a while, yes?! I liked Kyra's character and that she's so passionate about the things she loves! And all her friends and family! If you're in the mood for a bit of drama and romance and fun - this book is a perfect summer read for you! Thanks again Tracie! 😘❤
Have you ever dreamed of being a mermaid? Kyra has the dream job, whereby she works as a performing mermaid at a local aquarium. She lives near a beautiful beach which holds dear memories for her. And she meets a hunky surfer dude who finds Kyra irresistible. What could go wrong?????
Well this is chick lit, so plenty……..
Before I tell you my thoughts on the words, lets take a moment to appreciate the a-mer-mazing cover of In The Swim Of Things. Illustrator Lyndsay Lewellen has done a brilliant job of designing and bringing us the perfect cover for this book. You can see from the cover that Kyra is made to be a rather fit mermaid. (It is a costume that she wears, this is not a fantasy book). She is holding a sign to say ‘Save Sea Star Beach’ . What a great name for a beach, it makes me want to save it based just on the name. The beach holds so many memories for Kyra and the many other people who know of and live by the beach. Also, we can see in the book cover, 2 men. So, being chick lit, we know that there will probably be some romance. And there is…..
Kyra is a great character, there may be many women reading this who once dreampt of being a mermaid, Now Kyra’s reality is being a mermaid at the local aquarium. It sounds like a really fun job. Swimming in a tail, doing tricks in a tail and with glamorous make up and costumes on, teaching children to swim in a tail and being asked questions by lots of children, like “have you met Aerial?” , while she sits on her Mermaid throne at Poseidon Palace. You may think the way I have described Kyra so far is that she is breezy, princessy and flakey? No! not at all, she is fun, sexy and feisty. She is fighting for her beach after all. Kyra gets up to lots of mischief, fun and gets herself in a few sticky situations. Not only is she gorgeous, she is clever too, having studied marine science. When Kyra was asked an awkward question, she replied:
“I’m going to plead the Fifth on that question…” ( I might need to borrow that response, despite not being American!)
Kyra is a wonderful character that I felt like I knew from the way that Tracie Banister wrote her. I would love to see Kyra portrayed in a movie.
I have spoke a lot of Kyra, so obviously she is the main character that impressed me. There are plenty of great sideline characters too, that the Author wrote well and brought to life through the pages. Tracie Banister describes Sea Star Beach and Cape Cod in a way that brings the place to life in the readers head. This book has humour, romance, atmosphere, and a real sense of ‘going for what you believe is right’. There is also a really funny, cheeky and very messy little bird that features in this book.
In the Swim of Things is the perfect summer read. Whether you are away on holiday, or just taking an imaginary one from your reading spot, In the Swim of Things will have you chuckling away and rooting for Kyra and Sea Star Beach. You may even start dreaming of being a mermaid again.
Join Kyra as she navigates the slippery realms of romance in this watery tale of the mermaid who finds true love...
Kyra Goodwin works at the Cape Cod Aquarium as a mermaid, it is the perfect job for her as it encompasses her love for the oceans and all things aquatic. After leaving college to look after her father and brother, Kyra gives up her hopes of being a marine biologist and travelling the seven seas. Working at the aquarium is next best thing. When Sea Star Beach comes under threat from a large corporate development, Kyra will stop at nothing to save her beach.
Finding love was not on Kyra's horizon but just like buses, two potentials come along at once. Kyra meets Cade Price, retired Champion Surf-boarder, unexpectedly and they hit it off. Taking things slow seems the best option for Kyra, and while her budding relationship with Cade takes hold, Declan Burke, merwrangler and aquarist starts to show an interest. Finding herself drawn to both men, Kyra has to trust in her emotions...
But is there something fishy going on? An can Kyra discover the hidden treasure that is true love?
I loved this story. Kyra is such a nice, sweet girl who has had a tough time but always made the best of it. Taking care of her loved ones is high on her priority list and it's about time someone took care of her. I desperately try not to give away any spoilers and therefore I will keep my opinions about certain characters to myself....I will just say there are times when violence would not be out of the question and quite how Kyra stayed as calm as she did I do not know.
There are characters that appear in books that you think....I don't know about you, somethings not right, and then there are characters they you straight away like and are rooting for. This book has both of these and I'm so happy with the outcome. Go Kyra, enjoy the seas and sail into the sunset with the right man!
An emotion-filled story from start to finish that kept me awake until 2.30am as I just could not put it down.
Perfect to read whilst lounging on the beach watching the waves crash against the shore, or from the comfort of your favourite reading space!
I absolutely love Tracie Banister's writing, especially the point of view of her main characters. You know those wonderful books that don't feel like a book at all? The ones where you almost feel like you're the character and these thoughts are coming from your mind? This is one of those.
Kyra is compassionate, romantic, hilarious, caring, intelligent, patient, and so much more. You will want to hang out with her after reading this. And will most likely miss her character because she's so fun.
My fast formed addiction to this one escalated further as the novel progressed and Declan's character became more developed. Swwooooonnnnn! Declan is one of the hottest, sexiest, smartest, and sweetest characters that I have discovered in a while. Believe me when I say that you will love this man.
Anyway, there is a lot going on in this story but it all works well together and there are so many themes and messages weaved into the hilarious circumstances and banter! Banister tackles development and how it impacts the environment and community. She tackles struggles with friends, co-workers, and bosses. A huge part of the story revolves around our dreams coupled with responsibility and expectations regarding our family. Even bigger is the issue with dishonesty, infidelity and finding people that you can truly trust. But the extraordinary thing about this author is how she can assemble so many lessons, important issues, and situations into such a fast-paced, romantic, and laugh-out-loud novel!
In the Swim of Things is perfect for fans of romantic comedy and especially other sea-lovers out there like Kyra. You'll smile, laugh, get frustrated, laugh again, and most of all - feel happy for having read this one. Bravo to Tracie Banister for yet another fantastic novel!
This is one of those fun books you just like reading. It’s light-hearted, humorous, and never takes itself too seriously. Not that there aren’t some very dramatic moments and difficult emotions to deal with like loss, betrayal, etc. Damn if it wasn’t done in a really funny way.
I’ve mentioned in previous reviews how much I love depictions of realistic characters having realistic sex. Not everyone experiences perfect sex with multiple orgasms given by a towering, beautiful Scottish highlander with curly red hair and…. Oh sorry. I got a little distracted. Oh Jamie *sigh*. Anyway, when I’m not reading those types of scenes, and loving them as well just so we’re clear, it’s very refreshing to read about people who have had similar experiences to my own.
In In the Swim of Things, Tracie Bannister uses intimate scenes as an integral part of the plot. She uses sex, how it happens, how people feel about it, how good it is, to show how people can get so swept away in those feelings that the rest of the relationship is influenced by them. When things are working well physically, it’s hard to see how the relationship might not be fulfilling emotionally. Red flags tend to be ignored when one can get caught up in the romance. It’s human nature, and In the Swim of Things depicts this perfectly.
One of my pet peeves when reading a book is inconsistent characterization. When suddenly a character acts entirely differently due to the of a plot point. Have you ever seen that before? Well it happens more frequently than it should, and I loved the fact that these characters remained true to their personalities from beginning to end, flaws and all. For instance, Kyra tends to react emotionally and think later. This works for her and gets her into trouble, but throughout the book, we see her dealing with this trait and working on it.
I think of books like this as riding a bike on a perfectly sunny day. Easy, breezy, and so much fun that I could relax and enjoy the ride.
* Special thanks to Tracie Bannister for providing a copy of In the Swim of Things in exchange for an honest review.
In the Swim of Things is my first book by Tracie and I'm SO glad I picked it up. Then again with a cover as cute as it is, and one hell of a synopsis how could I not? [oh yeah & because I'm a mermaid fanatic ;)]
ANYWAYYYY, Kyra the book's heroine is a local on the Cape and is head mermaid at the aquarium. In her spare time from swimming with the fishes, Kyra is passionate about her family and the local beach which is about to become a private luxury resort. Permanently banning the locals from the beach and its beauty.
In addition to this Kyra grows closer to her "merwrangler" Declan as well as begins a relationship with a retired pro surfer; Cade. While it seems like a love-triangle, don't let that deter you because it's not one. Kyra's life begins spiraling one event into another creating our plot for the story.
The book had a lot of different plot lines going on at once, normally something like that can feel excessive but Tracie's writing does a great job making sure you're not lost. It created more depth to Kyra's life and those around her. I honestly felt it made the pages turn all the more faster. I was getting greedy for the full story and before I knew it I was finished.
Overall I AODRED this book. It was funny, sweet and exciting. I wish their was a sequel especially because I wanted more juicy scenes from a certain couple. I highly recommend this book if you're looking for a fun and sweet page turner!

You know you're onto a good book when you've absolutely nothing highlighted as from the start of the book because you were so mesmerised you forgot to make notes. That was the case with this book from the brilliant Tracie Banister, who brought us the amazing Izzy as is (Review here ) , Mixing It Up (here it is here) and In Need of Therapy (see that one here) . In each of these books we have strong leads and this is no exception with the fiery but extremely easy to warm to Kyra, who works as a mermaid in Cape Cod Aquarium. From the start with the flow of her tail and beautiful twirls, twists and acrobatics, laid so prettily in the midst of what we see to be the perfect oceanic setting, I was taken.
We are jolted back to reality with her issues dealing with brother and dad, who she looks after, her mermaid partner, Mackenzie, who doesn't often think of others and then the arrival of a development that will put an end to the beach life Kyra has grown up with. Add to this a new boyfriend with some sticky terms and conditions attached and the book was officially own that kept me guessing. There was a, hmm, no spoilers ... so ... let's just say there were a few moments that made me clutch my chest and and swoon (just gorgeous -wish-I-Could-tell-you ...), a lot of heat and plenty of warmth, fun and action. Very much recommended! Thanks so much to the author for the book in return for an honest review.
"You know what I like best about the ocean?........ "It makes you feel insignificant, but in a good way. When you see all those miles of water stretched out to the horizon, you realize your problems aren't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. It gives you perspective."
This book is probably the most sweetest and wonderfully weird book I have ever read! I genuinely didn't know what to expect!
Kyra is a professional mermaid (how cool would that job be)!! Even as challenges and difficulties comes her way Kyra is strong minded and determined. I loved her passion and loyalty towards people and things she loved. This book has a lot of layers, friendships, loyalty, courage, relationships and challenges. The character development is perfect, there wasn't a time were I though "oh come on" in my opinion it followed perfectly. I also learnt a lot in this book. It was extremely well researched and informative. This book is extremely well written and completely captivating. Being Irish, I find a lot of writers trying to write about the Irish culture and mixing us up with the British, Tracie got it completely right!!! (Go raibh mile maith agat - thanks a million). Thank you Tracie for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first book from this author and it wont be the last. Highly recommend.
In the Swim of Things is the perfect beach read whether you’re at the beach or just dreaming of relaxing on one. In fact, this will be a great book to return to in the dead of winter when we’re all dreaming of being on a beach somewhere far from the gray drab days.
I loved the main character, Kyra who has such depth. She’s so giving and loving toward her family, giving up her own aspirations to care for her father and younger brother. She also cares about her town and the beach that is being taken away from her community by a developer. The beach not only means a great deal to the residents of Chaucer, but for Kyra, there’s a deep emotional connection. She takes on the big, bad corporation and gives them a battle they didn’t see coming. Go Kyra!
And of course, there’s sizzling romance with not just one, but two hot guys that helps Kyra grow in ways that will surely surprise and impress, discovering what’s really important to her by the end.
There are so many wonderful aspects to this story: great writing, awesome characters-including an adorable child, and characters to hate (might I mention Gina?), themes of unconditional love and fighting for what you believe in, fabulous New England setting, including an aquarium, and of course “real” mermaids! And oh how that gorgeous cover depicts this story perfectly!
If you love sexy rom-coms with heart like I do, then this book is for you!
Congratulations to bestselling Author Tracie Banister, who is one of my favorite authors as well as a lovely person and online friend, on her latest release, In the Swim of Things. The cover is breathtakingly beautiful. This fun beachy read would also look lovely in your home or beach place as focal-point accessory, after you finish reading it. Kudos to illustrator Lyndsey Lewellen.
The colors of the cover are so pretty, so let’s take a closer look. The mermaid is the main character Kyra, who tells us the story of her magical summer in the first-person. She has the most amazing job- she really is a mermaid at the Cape Cod Aquarium. Her life as an underwater performer was so cool to read about.
You will see that Kyra the mermaid is holding a sign- “Save Sea Star Beach”. Kyra is on a mission to battle a big developer who threatens to destroy her favorite pristine beach. Can one pretty mermaid save the day? And in front of the aquarium, looking at Kyra are her two male friends. Cade, the sexy surfer dude, is Kyra’s new boyfriend. Or is he? Declan on the right, works at the Aquarium, and is a brooding guy, who seems to like Kyra. Or does he?
Kyra lives with her fellow mermaids in a cute town on Cape Cod. Her dad and brother also live nearby in the family home. Kyra’s mother died when she and her brother were kids, so Kyra has been the responsible and helpful one. Sean the brother is a happy-go-lucky guy, at least for part of the summer!
Readers, you are going to love this book! Filled with exquisite summer scenes, lots of interesting plotlines, humor, love, and plenty of sex, you are all set to have “fintastic” fun reading on the beach.
Thanks to the author for a review copy. This is my honest review.
I would start by saying this is a mermazingly good read, but I know all the mermaid puns will probably be used in a lot of reviews for this book. So, I will say it is just amazing and so much fun. And, just look at the cover. It’s gorgeous. This is a perfect book to read on your summer vacation, or even if you’re just dreaming of a vacation.
Kyra, a professional mermaid at the Cape Cod Aquarium, and her friends really took me on a journey as they protested against a luxury hotel developer who plans to build on their favorite beach and make it exclusive to hotel guests only. The people of Chaucer will no longer have access to the beach that holds so many of their memories. Along the way, Kyra discovers her true love.
I really can’t say enough good things about this book. All of the characters were fun and I would love to see more about them. I got so wrapped up in the story, I found myself staying up way later than I usually do and reading when I should have been cooking or cleaning (I shouldn’t say this, but I did burn one dinner). The way this book wrapped up caught me by surprise. It is definitely the sign of a very talented writing imagination. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for something fun to read this summer.
Tracie Banister’s books never disappoint. Her characters have charisma, her storylines are enticing, and she gives you just the right amount of steam. In the Swim of Things was no different—it was pure delight from start to finish.
Kyra loves her job as a mermaid at the Cape Cod Aquarium, from the glittery makeup and glamorous tail she dons to the rapt attention of her audience members. She truly relishes giving everyone who attends her shows a mer-tastic experience. (I couldn’t resist!) When smoldering surfer Cade comes on the scene, it feels like life couldn’t get any better. But when her personal interests clash with Cade’s professional life, Kyra’s happiness seems farther out of reach than ever. Add in floundering family members, a conniving fellow mermaid and Kyra’s deliciously brooding merwrangler and you have the storm of the century brewing!
Kyra’s passion, sassy retorts, and fabulous mermaid style will hook you from the very beginning. So head on over to the Cape Cod Aquarium for an exciting adventure filled with love, loss, laughter and triumph. I promise you’ll enjoy the trip!
Kyra Goodwin gave up college to help take care of her brother and father, her dream of being a marine biologist. Now she is a mermaid and loves her job. She tries to stop the construction of a resort which would take over a beach which Kyra loves dearly. She starts dating a retired surf boarder, Cade, and begins to develop feelings for Declan, a co-worker and his precious daughter. Things are complicated.
What a wonderful contemporary romance full of interesting characters and set on the beach. The characters are amazing full of spirit and personality that draw you into the story and invested into their future. The storyline was well written full of surprises, twists and turns, keeping the reader reading page after page. It is an emotional rollercoaster as Krystal goes through her decisions based on her internal fears and insecurities to develop the courage to make new dreams and follow them. This is a well written book and worth reading if you like contemporary romances that leave you feeling good.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
