I am a retired Marine colonel and now a full-time writer living in Colorado Springs with my wife, Kiwi, and infant twin daughters, Danika Dawn and Darika Marie.
I published my first work back in 1978, a so-so short story titled "Secession." Since then, I have been published in newspapers, magazines, and in book format in fiction, political science, business, military, sports, race relations, and personal relations fields. I returned to writing fiction in 2009, and I currently have over 85 titles published, 52 being novels. My novelette, "Weaponized Math," was a finalist for the 2017 Nebula Award, and my novella, "Fire Ant," was a 2018 Nebula finalist. My novel "Integration" was a 2018 Dragon Award finalist, and my novel "Sentenced to War" was a 2021 finalist. I am a USA Today Bestelling writer.
My undergraduate degree was earned at the U. S. Naval Academy (Class of 1979), and I have attended graduate school at U. S. International University and the University of California, San Diego, earning a masters and doctorate. I am a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the US. Naval Academy Alumni Association, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
I have rather eclectic tastes. I have won awards in photography, cooking, wrting, and several sports, earning national championships in rugby and equestrian events. When I'm not writing, I'm reading, cooking, going to the gym, or traveling. I attend quite a few cons over the course of a year, and love meeting other people who love books.
I write because I love it. I only hope that others might read my work and get a bit of enjoyment or useful information out of my efforts.
As an author, I don't think it is fair for me to rate any other author's books here on Goodreads if that rating is less than five stars. I have certainly read many books that do not deserve five (or four, three, or even two). However, I will not rate any of those here while I am a Goodreads author. Consequently, I will only be listing books that I really like and feel deserve five stars.
I’ve been a fan of several of the military sci-fi series put out by Jonathan P. Brazee, having read everything he’s produced except for his Ghost Marines series. They were uniformly superb, reeking of authenticity (something I know a bit about from second hand tales as half my family has served both as enlisted soldiers - my dad was a senior NCO - and officers - my uncle was a army Colonel and his son, my best man, is a navy Commander), and with imaginative plots abs truly well crafted characters. Well, now I’ve done and cleaned up, reading the few books that had been unread. I tried holding off reading Ghost Marines until the series was completed but just could not resist. I’m sorta glad I didn’t. I’ve now binged through Integration, Unification and Devotion (Books 1 to 3). Wow were these incredibly good. A main character who is an alien historically treated as a second class citizen abs in the first group now permitted to serve in combat arms (shades of integration of Blacks into the US military), an Empire in decay but potentially resurgent. Politics on the grand stage. Perfectly crafted action. Character and race creation that wonderfully imaginative. These books have it all, and they’re all perfectly done. My only regret, even though each book does end in a “Happily Enough for Now” even if not a “Happily Ever After”, is that now I have to actually wait for Book 4, Fusion to come out. I’m greedy and really hope that happens soon. In the meantime, each of these books, and the entire series so far, are highly recommended.
This may be Jonathan Brazee’s best novel yet. The Ghost Marines series has significant parallels in our own world, and Brazee’s writing and character development continue to knock it out of the park. Add in the author’s familiarity with the subject and you have a story that leaps off the pages and drags you along as the characters hit highs and lows, both professional and personal. I admire Colonel Brazee’s Service, but Author Brazee is rapidly establishing himself in the one of the best in the new pantheon of Military Science Fiction writers!
If you read reviews for books 1 & 2, you already understand what the high ratings mean. If you’re reading this review first, you’re looking to determine if the series is worth reading. It is! Every author knows that the spacing between releases directly impacts the number of readers in most cases. So, by waiting until the last series book is being reviewed, those reviews will usually indicate whether or not the author has written a series worth reading. It was!
The first book in this series introduced an alien who is one of the first to become a Marine in the human interstellar empire. He is known as a "Casper" as a derogatory term due to his very white skin. This is mostly a military SF novel, but with some exploration of different species in ways reminiscent of how the U.S. military integrated.
This second novel in the series still has plenty of military action for the military-sf fan, but doesn't forget the premise of the series.
This series, and this book in particular, are a surprise to me as a lover of space opera and military sf. The author's decision to tell the story from another species' perspective was spot on. His character development has grabbed me and drawn me in. Leefen and his family and fellow marines are worth following. I can't wait for the next installment of this series!
The Sassares unleash an engineered virus that infects 90% of all humans. Sergeant Leefen "Leif" a’Hope Hollow is left as the senior marine in charge of defending an entire plant from a Sassare invasion. Overwhelmed, confused, inadequate describe his feelings. What does his honor mean to his oath? What are the consequences to his troops of his decisions? What are the long term effects and reactions that follow from those choices? I recommend this book.
A great military sci-fi action series, with relatable characters and situations. From start to finish this novel will keep you turning page after page. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action and adventure. I look forward to more from this series 😁
This was the third book in the series and I read them, in order, one right after the other. The characters are worthwhile and the main ones are three dimensional. The tactics and battle scenes are excellent; hence my comment about David Weber. Excellent and I will follow both the series and the author.
Just finished the three books in the series so far. I nearly quit the first book because I could have sworn that infamous author of "It Takes a Village" was the writer. I stayed with it though and the the three are fun to read even with the "woke" slant. I am glad though that I did not pay a lot for these books. 😁
I greatly enjoyed the story. The actions of Leif, the main character, the battle scenes, made me feel as if I were there. A Marine through an through. This author continues to surprise and engage me with with his books on scifi/military
I've been waiting for this novel for a while. Love the series but I'm an impatient sob when it comes to publication times. Another excellent installment of the ghost marine universe.
Bit slow at first but builds up through to the middle where it slows back down until the landing on home planet then switches to make more involved action till the story section ending needs to wait for book 4 to continue the series
This is a very good series I've read all three books and loved every one of them I hope you'll be more books in the future I have to say that the author knows his Marines hope to see a new book soon
Well I don't know what I was expecting with this book, the first two were really good, this one is great.Pretty much the perfect military ST story. Thank you Mr Brazee.
This is a great read. I enjoyed the character building. The military life portrayed is very accurate. The hurry up and wait is a big part of military life.
