He meant to reveal the truth...except the touch of her hand made his blood rush faster, and left him yearning to hold on forever. From the friend stack, and passed along without context, so I didn't realize it was part of an interdependent book series. My reading experience suffered from that, but that wasn't the sum total for why it didn't really work for me.

A different friend and I coined what we call "injury of the week!" to describe a certain type of writing. It's crafting a plot around pop-up big events and crises rather than around naturally arising personal or external conflict. This book is most definitely an "injury of the week!" read. There's a fainting and then a mugging and kids stealing a boat, and a variety of suddeny-must-do-this events, all in service of the couple and getting them thrown together, but it feels more like they're being pushed around.

Also these big events are almost all shuttled along to be resolved off-page, which... not great. Hero gets mugged and stabbed so the heroine has to show up and take care of him, and them learn about each other, fine -- but then the mugging disappears after we're assured the guy was nabbed. Just as the kids who steal the boat are adorable and draw the leads out up until they're not needed and then we're assured there's a stable future awaiting them.

Far too much reliance on conveniently timed phone calls to interrupt various amorous activities.

And then enter Another Woman, who is meaningless aside being there to prickle the heroine.

It is kind of hilarious to me the heroine is on a very important mission, and is sincerely serious about it, and then does absolutely nothing toward fulfilling it. Yes it's fine she's so distracted by the hero this gives us over to "...important mission he's making her forget about completely," but there's not even window dressing that she bothered to do more than show up and mill about.

While this book leads into the next, and I get conflicts/questions couldn't be entirely resolved, the ending for this couple isn't enough. I liked the idea of them together and their natural-feeling fit. They have mirroring backgrounds and live in rarefied circumstances and thus understand each other in ways many other people can't, so there was a good sympathy as well as appreciation. But it was somewhat okay, and, what else?

I see there's several more books in the series to get to any answers, but I don't think I'll be tracking them down. Something tells me they'll be as weirdly episodic but a not-quite standalone but not quite satisfactorily resolving the entire huge plot, either.

Me encantó leerla.
