The iconic Elephantmen debuts as a comiXology Original title with this collection of all 5 issues of Elephantmen 2261: The Death of Shorty. Elephantmen has been described by J.J. Abrams as "An Awesome and Unexpected Story. You Must Check it out!" and lauded by Andy Serkis as "Bold, Mythic and heartbreakingly cool, Starkings' universe is a breed apart!" Elephantmen are human/animal hybrids designed to fight a war. But the war is over, and now they live among us. Debuting nearly 15 years and 80 issues ago from Image Comics, Elephantmen returns here with a new jumping on point. This all-new story is a whodunnit that draws our heroes, Hip Flask and Jack Farrell, into the curious death of an Elephantman known to his friends as "Shorty". Part of the Comixology Originals line of exclusive digital content only available on Comixology and Kindle. This title is available as part of Comixology Unlimited, Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading.
Richard Starkings is a British comics professional, known for writing the hit sci-fi series ELEPHANTMEN and specializing in lettering, thanks to his award-winning Comicraft lettering studio.
It's amazing how Starkings can craft a world and all its characters in 5 issues so you can become so easily familiar with them. The story itself was super interesting and well crafted. I'm glad this was my introduction to Elephantmen!
Having never read any of the original Image comic run of the Elephantmen I was unsure what I was getting into with this book but it was available on Kindle Unlimited so I decided to give it a try. Turns out this was actually a pretty good book and even though I had no prior knowledge of the series (except that they existed in some format) the book itself did not require you to have any intimate knowledge of the characters as it showed some of the dangers the Elephantmen dealt with in war and faded into a mystery about the death of one of those animal hybrids caught up in that conflict now that they were no longer fighting. Although it is not a long book we are introduced to the characters clearly and the plot was fairly smooth as the detectives (at least they look like detectives) Hip Flask and Jack Farell investigate the death of shorty who was an actual Elephantman as opposed to a hippo like Hip or some other Animal hybrid like the others.
So if you like noir type stories and are not weirded out by the occasional animal hybrid (or the fact it is in the future I suppose) then why not give this series a try. Maybe you will find something new that you will like too. :)
I'd seen issues of Elephantmen and Hip Flask for years and had always wondered what it was about, but never got the chance to read any of it because I never knew a good entry point. With Comixology Unlimited I now have access to their original titles and this was one of the first I read. Loved it. I was worried with this being a continuation of a long established series, but I think I the world was explained enough that I understood what was going on. I loved the story. At its heart its a murder mystery. I'm not usually a mystery fan, but this kept my interest and the resolution was great. Overall I gave this five stars because I loved the art; I loved the story; the established universe was great, and it really was an enjoyable experience. Great entry point.
A sort of noir crime story. Features humans and anthropomorphic creatures. Has a sort of Sam space of Maltese falcon feel to it. The characters count for more than the mystery.
This is the first time I’ve ever read an Elephantmen comic. Outstanding story and wonderful characters. The artwork was excellent also. It actually had me almost crying at the end. I have two more collections to read and I put the other collections on my list on Amazon.
