All he wanted was his father’s approval Chileab was born to privilege as the second-born of King David, but he still feels like an outcast. His crooked foot make it hard for him to do anything and although he enjoys being an advisor for his abba, he never feels like King David approves of him. When Chileab hears of the little girl who had been kidnapped, he goes off to find her, even though five years have passed. He makes his way into the desert by himself. Can he find Rina? Will he learn that Adonai’s approval is all he needs? Will he learn to rely on more than just himself? A Rapunzel reimagining set during the time of King David

This book is really fun! I've been really enjoying the Tales of the East series: while I haven't read a ton of Biblical fiction, it is something that I'm always intrigued by, and I really enjoy well-written Christian fiction!
Rock of Ages is a novella focusing on Chileab, one of David's sons, and Rina, and is a Rapunzel retelling! It was a quick read but a fun one: there was a lot of action packed into a book that is just over 100 pages. Since it was a retelling, I could pretty easily predict what was going to happen; however, there was enough action in it to still keep my interest, so that was good.
The writing style is pretty simplistic, but also complex enough that it wasn't boring to read. I think it would be a really good book for younger readers, since it is also very clean content-wise and easy to understand.
The two main characters, Chileab and Rina, were really fun to read about, and although their characters weren't as developed as if it were a novel, I enjoyed seeing their personalities. While there wasn't necessarily a spiritual angle to the book, there was a lot of discussion on reliance on God, and obviously it was a story about King David's son, so King David was involved in the book.
Overall, this was a fun and clean book that I really enjoyed!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion; I was not required to write a positive review.
I’ve been enjoying an “oops” on my part the last little while! I unknowingly signed up for reviewing the fourth book in a series when I’d only read the first one, thus breaking my rule of never reading a series out of order. The only answer to the dilemma was, of course, buying the middle two and reading them, and this is the last of those two for me. What a fun series!
I love these books, but if you asked me why, I’m not sure I’d be able to give you a concrete answer. The writing is good, but not great; the characters are okay, but could be a bit deeper; the plots are pretty simple, too…but there’s a certain charm about these stories that I really am enjoying. And this book was no different.
I fell in love with Rina right away. She’s just your simple village girl, thrust into a situation that is neither good nor easy. Then there’s Chileab, who wants to make a difference in whatever small way he can, but he feels stuck because he is crippled. Put those two together, and an adventure tale to boot, and it’s a fun little story.
I imagine people in perhaps the 8-15 age range would enjoy this book the most. It’s clean, fun, is somewhat reminiscent of the fairy tales where the prince comes to save the princess, and it has a good theme on trusting the Lord even when life is hard. Recommended.
I love this series so much when I first read one of faiths books I was immediately in love. What made all of her books better is the fact that I am friends with her sister and have meet her. I got this series as a gift from Faith signed and best gurft EVER. Highly recommend all of her books.
