World of Chains #2

The Fallen Bard

Rate this book
Daniel's (updated) Guide to Early Retirement. Version 2.0 : 1: Intercept illegal money transfer from mafia boss. (Complete success. Except for the part where I was discovered and almost caught) 2: Hide out in super-exclusive Full Immersion Virtual Reality game until the heat is off. (Doing fine so far. They may have figured out that I’m in-game…still, it’s a huge game, so no problem, right?) 3: Roll a bard. Max out charisma. Live it up. (Two out of three ain’t bad. We’re just postponing the ‘Live it up’ part a bit.) 4: Profit. (Still almost two years to go for that. Think happy thoughts!) He could have been way worse off. Sure, Daniel was stuck in-game as the local bard of a quaint village, but people were nice, the quests juicy and the lore intriguing. Even so, with the mob on the look-out, Daniel would soon find himself sorely tested to avoid detection. Still no harems in this series, even with a Bard MC. Go figure. We’re going light on the cursing and less light on the puns. You were warned.

01/03/2024 Notes:

The re-read for this one was not as engaging as re-reading #1.
Definitely like the way different races are presented and integrated into the story.

01/16/2021 Notes:

Overall, a fun adventure with Archie, the bard. He's grown beyond the self-centered, fun guy and I like that. A lot of the reasons why I love bards are woven into the story. =)

Story needs another wave or two of editing to tighten up phrasing & pacing.

Soundbooth Theater is one of my fav audiobook production companies but I'm not entirely on board with the "music & sound effects" that are added to the story. The balance is still off and music/sounds are louder than narration. Usually, I would be listening via earphones & that would make my ears hurt. It's not as bad when I listen on external speakers but still noticeable in volume levels.

I have never been so disappointed by a second book in a series as I am with this one. I absolutely loved the first book. This one was so dang detail and lore based that I felt I was reading an Emerilia book. I finally gave up after 50%. I just couldn't do it.

Title: The Fallen Bard (World of Chains #2) by Lars Machmüller

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5)

Review:

Lars Machmüller's "The Fallen Bard," the second installment in the World of Chains series, continues the dark and enthralling journey into a world where chains of destiny bind both gods and mortals. Machmüller deftly builds upon the foundation laid in the first book, delving deeper into the complexities of his meticulously crafted fantasy realm.

World-building:

The intricacy of Machmüller's world-building is on full display in "The Fallen Bard." The author's ability to create a vast and immersive universe, complete with unique cultures, mystical systems, and a rich history, elevates the narrative. Each location feels distinct, contributing to a sense of authenticity that anchors the fantastical elements of the story.

Character Development:

In this installment, characters undergo profound transformations, and Machmüller masterfully explores the consequences of their choices. The fallen bard, the central figure in this tale, is a complex and compelling character whose journey adds layers of depth to the narrative. Supporting characters also undergo significant arcs, making them more than mere instruments of the plot.

Plot Dynamics:

The plot unfolds with a sense of urgency, balancing moments of intense action with introspective interludes. Machmüller weaves a tapestry of political intrigue, divine machinations, and personal vendettas that keeps the reader engaged throughout. Twists and turns are expertly placed, adding an element of unpredictability to the narrative.

Prose and Style:

Machmüller's prose is eloquent and evocative, enhancing the reader's immersion into the world of chains. The author employs vivid descriptions without succumbing to verbosity, maintaining a delicate balance that allows the narrative to breathe. Dialogue is sharp and reflective of the diverse personalities within the story.

Themes:

"The Fallen Bard" delves into profound themes such as the nature of destiny, the consequences of power, and the interplay between mortals and gods. Machmüller tackles these complex subjects with nuance, inviting readers to ponder the intricacies of free will and the impact of choices on the fabric of reality.

pixel art :: new :: artists :: tavern :: fantasy :: Bard :: kirokaze ...

Conclusion:

"The Fallen Bard" is a triumphant continuation of the World of Chains series. Lars Machmüller's ability to balance intricate world-building with compelling character arcs results in a fantasy novel that transcends the genre's conventions. As the chains of destiny tighten, readers are left eagerly anticipating the next chapter in this captivating and immersive saga.

Excellent!

Characters, story, game mechanics, editing - everything here has been done very well. This second book expands the story and characters, and leaves you wanting more. I especially enjoy the plot and game mechanics focus, and how you never know what is coming next. The pacing is also nice, skipping the unnecessary while keeping the needful. All in all a very well-crafted work. Keep it coming! Definitely recommended. (Read book #1 first!)

Just another excellent book!

We return to the world of chains, as our favorite part continues to refine his skills and avoid his past. One seems to be easier than the other, and as the gangsters get on his trail our intrepid hero ends up on a mission to set up an alliance with a nearby kobold city.

One of the great pleasures of reading fantasy literature for me, is reading about cities. The society that is created by the author is absolutely fascinating, with much of our time being spent with the “anathema “caste. These lowest of the low, still create a vibrant and fascinating culture that motivates our hero to continue to think of more than just himself.

Very very funny. All the great skills and stats that you love in an LITRPG. No harems! And an absolutely terrific story and world building

A great read. There is wry wit here!

Daniel is a great anti hero. He's cast himself as a bard in a revolutionary full immersion game, meaning to use it as his escape vehicle from the mob He recently ripped off. Buying himself 2 years in a pod at the high security gaming company's facility, his intent is to indulge in some women and sing until the 2 years pass.

Things go a little different than he planned right from the start. Get a copy, sit, read, and prepare to chuckle if not outright laugh.

First of all, the audiobook is an EXPERIENCE. Soundbooth Theater do an amazing job producing this story, which definitely heightens the experience. Can't recommend enough. They also are phenomenal with the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, so I can only awesome that they are great at everything they produce.

This book was solid from start to finish. The Bard travels to a new city of kobolds to form a pact with them and the human city, with hijinks ensuing. Good action, good lore and worldbuilding (though less than in book 1) and fun gamelit elements.

Bards are the best!

Having read the first book, having read the second book and having... just kidding no third book! Not yet at least, but you'll definitely be left wanting, neigh craving it!

This is a solid second work by a great author, no sequelitis here(if you're not familiar with Sequelitis Google it).

Start to finish the story is an enjoyable ride that doesn't disappoint. I highly recommend!

Great storytelling here

I thoroughly enjoyed The fallen bard. Who knew kobolds could be this cool? I had a great time. Nice to see a story that isn't all about power leveling, broken characters, exploits, and such. The MC has some everyman feel to him. He has some good insight without being a supergenius that excels at everything. He even gets the tar beaten out of him a time or two. Might be a while before the next one but I'll read it when he writes it. What a bard's tale!

Great next book

Man really liked this book. MC’s voice is unchanged, which is great. It is a fun time seeing how he talks and blackmails his way through the a whole mess of situations. The next chapter is a great expansion of his last story line. You see him develop deeper ties with the NPCs in the village.

Skill dev continues. Though it is nothing ground breaking. Really the fun part of this is the story and the connections he makes with other the others characters.

Loved the book

I always get greedy for spell gains, achievements, and those skill ups but i understand its important to pace them. This author does a good job and creates a likeable character. The one thing that i didnt like was the repetitive use of the word schizophrenic in the early part of the book. Just seemed an odd choice and i kept picking up on it. I look forward to future books and its unfortunate it took me so long to get to these

Bards are underrated

Second book in hopefully a long line of books about the much maligned class the bard. Absolutely fantastic build off the groundwork from the first book without the usual parody bars who just seduces everyone this is a bard who actually uses his magic and his music effective!y. Not just to get in bed with elf girls. Keep on writing Lars

I don't have much to say about this. There's some interesting backstory for the world here, but it's game world back story so it's not terribly important to the actual story of the MC trying to escape the mob. In the same way, most of the events of the story are fine but don't really progress anything.

loved it

I enjoyed this book as much as, if not more than the first title in the series. We got to learn a little more about the world and our favorite bard is great to see back. I look forward to a book 3 and hope to see a lot more into the world of chains!

Very good read

Solid mix of stats, info and action. Still nice and slow on the levels but thats not a bad thing compared to some books giving 60+ in 5 pages. Consistent and mostly balanced system. Solid book with a ton of fun for readers.

Good read

Nice to find litrpg with simple story lines and character growth . At this pace the 2 year game immersion will take 22 more books.

Might be too much middle in the story. I need a beginning, middle and ending

A fun read

I enjoyed it immensely. If you are looking for an enjoyable, light read, this fits the bill. Front porch, a good cider and The Fallen Bard. A solid combination for a spring afternoon of reading.

Bards Rule!

Who knew a bard MC could be so much fun. A nontraditional choice that adds an enjoyable spin to LitRPG. Bring on book 3!

Wayward Bard was soooooooo good there was no way that I could stop reading and I immediately jumped right back into the Compendium after telling to my daughter to get the set. And The Fallen Bard does what so many authors fail to do which is to keep the reader entertained! Other writers only write a book that is more filler than story a bridge, just to get to the other side and the next book.
But Lars Machműller is too good a writer for that! He wrote a book that was engaging and again wonderful... and yes it's chock-full of new challenges, new quests, new characters were introduced, of course existing relationships changed making even stronger bonds with the friends he's earned, and he even gets a pet companion a chameleon named Atlas! And throughout the book our Bard improves his skills and his magic as his bardic skills are woven around his magic!

Yeah and I can't say enough about Soundbooth Theater is awesome. Justin Thomas James is great narrating David story. Jeff Hays has an incredible range as he narrates all other male characters in the book. Jeff is just crazy good! I really don't quite have a handle on Laurie Catherine Winkle as she mostly did the AI but she did the other female voices too and I have a good impression about her. But here's where Soundbooth Theater really shone weaving a story of a Bard with music. It's a perfect combination of words and music, making their own magic, it was AwesomeSauce! My hat's 👒 off to the violinist!
