Our tour of the history of Marvel reaches the turbulent 1970s! Wolverine's vigil takes an unexpected turn! Spider-Man has an adventure in the new age of blockbuster cinema! Finally, an all-new tale of the Moon Knight, one of the decade's most exciting creations, helmed by superstar creative team BENJAMIN PERCY & JUAN FERREYRA (GREEN ARROW)!
Charles Soule is a #1 New York Times-bestselling novelist, comics author, screenwriter, musician, and lapsed attorney. He has written some of the most prominent stories of the last decade for Marvel, DC and Lucasfilm in addition to his own work, such as his comics Curse Words, Letter 44 and Undiscovered Country, and his original novels Light of the Jedi, The Endless Vessel, The Oracle Year and Anyone. He lives in New York.
The continuing Wolverine story was interesting, wonder how they’ll continue it next issue (it seems like it’s coming to an end soon). The Spider-Man story was not my cup of tea, and the Moon Knight story was pretty good. I’ve been curious about Moon Knight so I’ll have to find some omni’s of his and give them a go.
I read this for the last story about Moon Knight, but will touch upon all three in this anthology.
The first story about Wolverine, and a demon, and a woman he fought the demon with when it showed up was the weakest: no explanation of why this woman was fighting the demon, or what type of demon it was and there are multiple kinds in Marvel so... It also tried to make us sympathize with her by showing her husband, but it was so brief, it didn't work.
It didn't help that it was a short story with a to be continued, when I have little interest in continuing based on this.
The second story was a one-shot about Peter Parker's Spider-Man and was more effective: a woman is belittled and used by her son to stand in line for tickets, while he runs off to buy movie props; she begs him to be allowed to use the bathroom and Parker stews as he sees the son mock her and walk off. When a robbery takes place, he thinks he's run out of luck as no one will hold his spot as he helps - ah, well, that old Parker luck.
The ending is more satisfying than I'd expected it would be halfway through, and that was a pleasant surprise.
The Moon Knight story is darker, both visually and as far as the contents go. The moody writing is matched perfectly by the beautifully executed, and equally moody painterly art, in contrast to the more typical art style and the brighter colors in the other two stories. It made this story stand out, to be quite frank, but this grim one-shot tale was the standout in my opinion: whereas the first was silly, and the second was playful but effective, this story chilled me - and made me think and feel more than the other two.
You could honestly skip the first story, in my opinion, and the second is a worthwhile read. But the Moon Knight tale is the real reason to read this issue.
So far I feel like this has been the best book of this series. The Wolverine story continues to get more interesting. A nice turn of events in this story. The Spider-Man story was better than the last one. I have wanted to read some Moon Knight as the character intrigues me.
