— DEAD GIRL WALKING. — What could be worse than getting hit by a bus? Waking up as Death’s new apprentice, that’s what.
I already know how crazy that sounds.
For 18 years, I was able to see the dead, so I pretty much managed to deal with a lot of unusual things in the world. I even learned to accept my strange, if not slightly annoying, ”I see dead people” ability. But the one thing that tipped me over the edge? I can’t drink coffee in the afterlife.
Not even a sip.
I know what you’re thinking. Surely things can’t get any worse than that? Well... I also have a rival apprentice who despises me, a quarterback ghost who won’t leave me the hell alone, a sexy angel determined to take me out on a date, and a silly little crush on my new boss.
Yeah, you read that last part right. I have an aimless crush on the Grim Reaper, and no, he isn’t a hooded skeleton clutching a scythe. He’s a gorgeous man in a tailor-made suit and every word he utters fills me with desire...just like the others do, despite my best efforts to resist them.
Unfortunately, a mysterious darkness is spreading through the human world, and Death has tasked me with putting an end to it. At least, that’s what I tell myself, as I quite possibly make the worst decisions of my entire life...
Death’s Apprentice is a Reverse Harem Urban Fantasy. This series is a medium-burn romance filled with an extreme amount of dark humor, sarcasm, mystery, and a talking dog who is totally judging Sacha’s bad decisions in life. Buckle up, and get ready to join Sacha on her soul-reaping journey...and perhaps a little detour into Hell.
I liked this one overall, though I would have liked it to be longer to get to know the characters better. The pace felt a bit rushed throughout. The entire book takes place over only about 3 days.
I also think the authors need to think more about their characters and their back stories to make sure they actually make sense as well. The FMC is introduced to us as a former ballet dancer - she gave up dancing a year previously to help her mom out financially. Then we get things that make no sense - for one, why did she wait a year before finding a job if leaving her dream was to help out financially? Second, her whole love of food did not work. She's supposedly a total junk food fiend and eats horribly. I'm sorry, but no ballet dancer who made it into a prestigious ballet company is eating that way. The authors also mention that she decided to make a lifestyle change and finally eat healthy like her friend, and it let her lose enough weight to fit into a size 6 again. What? Again, she's a ballet dancer! She would not be excited to be back to a size 6 as a ballet dancer - she would have been much smaller. Even if we are to presume she developed this unhealthy diet obsession after choosing not to go into the ballet academy, that means in a single year she developed and then overcame her junk food obsession, so she wouldn't presumably have gotten several sizes bigger. This is rather inconsequential to the plot overall, but it feels poorly thought out, and it makes me worry how the plot will continue as the series moves forward. Even if the authors wanted to keep her a ballet dancer with a junk food habit, there should at least have been a sentence or two acknowledging and justifying it - recovering from an eating disorder, having to work out extra hard to still maintain a dancer's body when she was dancing, something to tie it together and make it make sense with her character.
Some copyediting and grammar issues as well.
Despite those issues, I look forward to seeing where the series will go, and I will continue.
I loved this book it was a fun and easy to get absorbed into. This does have some more explicit languge for younger readers it also has some hinted sexual behaviors. I also love how the girl has multiple love interst and has not taken to any of them right off the back like some stories do. I cant wait to read more of this sieres and to find out what will hapen to our girl Sacha next. I do wish that the book went a little slower and made it take time over more then just three days.
Grim is the first book in the new series - Deaths Apprentice by Scarlett Snow & Tiegan Clyne.
Sacha has a strange ability to see ghosts, but she’s finally able to put it to use as the unthinkable happens and her world as she knows is changed in the blink of an eye.
Sacha is an enjoyable character to read with plenty of bickering with her co-apprentice, and each of the characters are well defined and individual. This is definitely an entertaining read.
4.2⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️& 0 🌶️. This very much follows a similar plot to existence by Abbi Glines. Which I also did by audiobook. The plot of this was a little more interesting in that Sasha becomes his apprentice and they’re both “dead” as opposed to living. Kind of like angels of death. She has multiple attractions/interests by the end including an angel, a demon, a ghost etc but the “grim reaper” has my heart, cannot resist a man/angel in a suit. I also like the domineering demon king… 🤫 even tho he’s the villain of this story. The series has potential but it’s a fairly basic plot, I’ll probably continue the series out of curiosity.
This is by far going to be a great series. I absolutely loved this story. Oh but that ending. I absolutely need to read the next book. Really hope it comes out soon. This author is turning into one of my favorite authors. Cannot wait to see what happens next. Loved it!!!
Really enjoyed this dark and deathly tale! Sacha is a great FMC - tough feisty but still vulnerable. I can see the love interests forming but not sure how she’ll get out of the pickle she’s found herself in now. Can’t wait to read the follow up!
This had the potential to be a really good story, but the attraction from the FMC with every single guy was irritating and excessive. The whole book felt rushed.
I’m not sure I would keep going if there were anymore books after this one.
It ends on a cliffhanger with nothing up next to read.
It was a mixture of some very good parts and some very weak ones. The beginning was good but then it turned to hell... I couldn't understand why she was so appealing to all male characters and wanted to bang them.
Creative and unique story involving the Grim Reaper, Angels, and Lucifer. I love reading books involving Lucifer and the Angel of Death! The plot and story is intriguing and has left a lot of unanswered questions that I’m sure will be slowly revealed as the author continues the series. As of right now, there are so many possibilities that I’ve come up with in my head for how things will play out in the upcoming books.
I really enjoyed all the characters and how the author portrayed them. Sacha is snarky and impulsive but has good intentions. Deacon is a groucha** at times but can be sweet and sincere other times. Ryan and Gabriel both seem sweet but I didn’t feel like I’ve read enough interactions between them and Sacha to really develop a strong connection to them as a reader yet. If the author wrote from multiple POV, I may have felt differently. Death so far is my favorite. He’s sweet yet commanding when necessary. I can tell he genuinely cares about Sacha and even went into a losing battle with Lucifer over her. Then there is Lucifer. I’ll admit, when we were first introduced to him, I kind of wished he would end up in Sacha’s Harem, but then the final scene where Sacha got a glimpse of what he looked like under his human appeareance... while it wasn’t described in detail, it did say it was a “horrifying” sight which was enough to turn me off. I imagined a mutated goat demon or something equally off-putting 🤣
The book was fairly short and a quick read. There were times where I felt things were rushed in regards to the timeframe from when Sacha died to the end of the book which was only a couple of days. But then again, if I witnessed myself as a corpse and life as I knew it was over then I may behave differently in regards to feelings and relationships. Either way, I enjoyed the book and will continue this series to see what happens with Sacha in her new life as an apprentice for Death and Lucifer’s new “pet”.
3.5 First off, let's get one thing straight. This main character is the most stupid person I've ever had the pleasure of reading about. That being said, while she doesn't even have enough brain cells to make a sandwich, she isn't necessarily annoying. The book is rather short in my opinion and I feel like the plot could've been a bit more complex? I mean there were no side plots or anything to fill up the story which is probably why it was so short.
There was a bit of insta-love between Death and her considering they barely talked and he's an immortal whose been alive Death knows how long, so shouldn't he be a bit more standoffish and less puppy love? The other potential harem members like Gabriel and that random guy have like 2 conversations with her. Deacon is irritating and both the apprentices backstories are lacking and seem to not be thought through.
Overall this book was immature and needs to go back to the drawing board. If you're bored then it doesn't hurt to read it to pass the time but don't expect anything worthwhile. This author clearly is new to writing (not entirely sure of that but it sure seems like it). Dear author, if your reading this, sorry for the harsh review. May I suggest reading from some of my faves Tate James, Cm Stunich, Mary E Twomey, AK Koonce, Steffanie Holmes, etc.
Edit: after reviewing the authors other books, I'm ashamed to say that I'm familiar with her book, Ghouls, and I actually enjoyed that book. Similarly, it was too short and the plot wasn't very complex but it was funny and I liked it. Not sure what went wrong here but.
I didn't read the blurb so I wasn't sure what to expect when I started. Was just going by the series title. But it was so much more than that.
Sacha is dead. Died a gruesome death due to her not paying attention while crossing the road to buy some carrots. Yes, eating healthy was literally the death of her. But that isn't the end for her. She becomes Death's apprentice. Though the job isn't exactly what she thought it would be. Or why she was brought there in the first place.
I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was super cute. It does cover a few sensitive topics, i.e. suicide, overdosing, and just death in general. A warning should be stated in case these may be triggers for you.
While this book states it is a reverse harem, there isn't a clear indication of who will be in the harem. I can make a guess of who the men are, but not much was done in the intimacy department.
This ends on a cliffhanger so be prepared to be upset about that. It isn't TOO bad of one, but still has you reeling a bit.
Overall, I'm excited to see where this will end up heading. The characters are fun. The storyline is unique. And I just loved diving into it. Would definitely recommend reading it.
I'm not sure how I felt about this read, I liked the beginning storyline but then it just got weird i guess, this is a RH and the men liking Sasha felt forced, like the writer totally forced these love interest. There are a few stolen kisses that made me feel awkward since I didn't get the building romance from anyone, they just automatically liked her, and the weirdest thing is the 3 out of 4 guys that do like her know if she becomes death that the guy is taking her body in which she will sees to exist which is a head scratcher, why try for a date or kiss, matter fact death himself knows this and likes her, weird! What is he gonna do, take her body and make love to himself? I don't get this! Moving on, Sasha in annoyingly childish at times and down right brass in others she is not a thinker by any means and it shows. She's more of a jump into lava and then like "omg I died, and I didn't see that coming" like she's shocked that her ideas of making things better or helping don't go right, she's like wile e coyote mixed with princess peach complex? Not a book for me, 2 and a half stars.
For me, the first book in a new series is always exciting. You don't know what to expect and go in without knowing if you will like it or not. Some plots pull you in, others don't and that's entirely subjective. We all have our own likes and dislikes. Lately I have been on a contemporary streak because I was a bit tired of the paranormal plots that started blending together. Grim is one of the exceptions because of the unique plot. I love the idea of the Death's apprentice and the world that was built by the authors. They executed a captivating and well-written plot and tease us with the introduction of the characters. Some backgrounds are more explored than others, giving that extra push to continue reading the series. If you aren't convinced by that, you probably will be by the ending, because that is one hell of a cliffhanger right there!
Whew! Where do I start? Sacha's got troubles. Death troubles. Haha, pun intended.
Originally, reading this book, I started off not impressed. Bored even. The cover and blurb were admittedly my biggest draws (that cover!!). Sacha didn't have many, if any, definable characteristics besides being clearly headstrong. She leaps forward with a level of disobedience that if she weren't already dead, would have gotten her killed several times over.
At first, I thought we'd have a redeeming moment and dear sweet Ryan would be mixed in and BOOM! a harem would be born. This is a slow-burn for sure, so prepare to wait for smexy time. By the end though, I'm thinking even Gabriel's going to wanting a piece of little-black-dress Lady Luck here.
Death is delicious and sometimes I wish there'd been more physical descriptions but I certainly understand why there wasn't. I'm curious about seeing where Deacon, Death, and others all tie in but the end is what will have me buying Book #2.
Is it a cliffhanger? Is it a doozy? You bet your oil-slick black wings it is.
There were a few continuity issues that bothered me, like when she first dies and is in the gold petal river she says something about meager swimming skills or something then towards the end says she was always a good swimmer. The overall premise is cool though with interesting characters. However, I have problems with the only characters in the book being handsome love interests. This reflects a lack of depth in the story and makes each individual relationship feel shallow at best. It does state it is a slow burn so hopefully, the authors have time to correct this however I feel there isn't much substance that will make the story stick in my head enough to wait for the next one. The cliffhanger would have had me downloading the next immediately but since it isn't out yet I probably won't read the second book.
I am totally digging this series already. I love Sacha who just so happens to be a completely new but totally badass reaper.
Scarlett Snow and Tiegan Clyne are two incredibly gifted writers and I felt so much in this book. I cried, laughed, and got angry right along with Sacha. She is written so beautifully that I can’t help but feel what she feels and I became fully immersed in her story. She’s a fantastic character and I can not wait for more.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book as it is amazing but a word of warning - be prepared to set some time aside in your day to read this book because I could not put it down. Grim had me enraptured from start to finish AND holy hot guys Batman!
Scarlett has this way of writing books you get so pulled into that you can feel the emotions of the characters. It so amazing. There were parts of this book at hits you right in the heart bone. You get pulled in you get devoted and then your about to exploded and she rips the floor out from under you. She always leaves us begging for more. And this book is a prime example.
Sasha is a strong brave girl. She is head strong and is not afraid to speak her mind. I don’t want to give away spoilers but you’ll find out that this is one book you will not put down and you will be begging for more.
I previously read The Queen's Protectors and loved it. So, I was excited to read another Reverse Harem by Scarlett Snow.
But I have to say that I just couldn't get into this story. The setting and the description of the afterworld were great, but the characters just didn't click with me (or each other). I didn't feel any chemistry and couldn't connect with Sacha. From the blurb, I expected her to be quite snarky. She turned out to be the opposite. And so many aspects of her were at odds with each other and didn't make sense.
It's a quick read and, again, the setting is really great. I don't feel like I wasted my time on this. But it's like the story could have been so much more.
I received a free copy of the audiobook from the publisher.
Heather Costa does a solid job narrating this quirky dark fantasy about a young woman who dies and becomes an apprentice to the Grim Reaper: before our coffee-loving, vehemently non-cussing heroine can get a grasp on being dead (and all the romance that OBVIOUSLY brings), she is foisted into the middle of a long-standing civil war between Death and the devil himself.
This book has a thrilling climax and a very intriguing cliffhanger ending…which saved this from being a dud. A lot of the dialogue is beyond cringeworthy, the list of potential suitors for our heroine is borderline ridiculous, and while a quick read? It does drag in spots.
I will definitely give the sequel a gander, based solely on that killer ending.
This book seemed so realistic! That's probably a strange thing to say about a fantasy book but I thought the way the FMC was treated during her transition and how she responded made it seem true to life (or death). The twists and turns in this book kept me guessing and there was one in particular I really didn't see coming and I had a proper "No! You cant!!" moment. I loved the sidekicks (How cute!! Although don't tell them I said that) I'm excited to see what happens with her men and I love their different personalities that are starting to come through. Fantastic start to a series, can't wait for the next!
This story line has potential, but really fell short of the mark for me and is to rushed and goes for easy answers. There's just a lot that doesn't make sense. All of these guys are into her for no apparent reason, the first apprentice is on one hand treated like he's also new, and on the other like he's experienced. The MC rushes in to confront the enemy and solve Deaths problems, including taking drastic measures after one day - Why?! Because he's hot is pretty weak, and while she supposedly is full of questions, she runs off without any real info and makes things worse.
Read July 2024 This book had soo much potential and just felt like it fell a bit flat. It's too short, it needed to be longer to really give characters a chance to actually bond and to give them a bit more backstory. It's super insta-love, why was Ryan randomly obsessed with her? Why was Death? Sacha - I wanted to like her but it was hard work, talk about arrogant. She's been dead and in that world for less than 24 hours and she's already marching around like she owns the sodding place when she's got no idea about anything. Looks like this authors given up with this series anyway as book 1 was published in 2019 and there is no book 2 and it's 2024.
This book was amazing!!!! I finished it with in a couple of hours!!!! I love our main character and her prospective mates: Death, Gabriel, Deacon, Ryan, Lucifer and maybe Charron?!?!!! Wish it was longer and can't wait for the next book to come out!!!! And I know Lucifer is our villain especially with what happened at the end but I feel it there is anyone that can make an honest being out of him it would be Sacha!!!! So I cannot wait to explore more into their adventures with them!!!! Also will she be getting more men??!!
Oh My God! Oh My God! Oh My God! You have got to read this!
Paranormal. Slowburn Rh. ?/? Guys Demons/Angels/Lobo realm setting. Getting a second chance to live, Sache, except a position as Death apprentice. Oh this book killed it! I loved it so so much. The imagery is like if Disney made Hercules for adults then mashed it with a paranormal reaper tale. I CAN NOT wait to delve in deeper with the next book. Get to know the characters more... drool over Death, you know, the usual.
The writing is well done, and has a good flow. The main character is believable. The mythology that the author uses is done very creatively. I began to care about the characters very early on; the emotional connection, for me, was there. I laughed out loud, and even shed a few tears. Looking forward to seeing how the series continues!
NOTE: if you are looking to push a specific religious agenda, this is not a book for you.
The last thing Sacha was expecting when she died was to be offered a job by Death. Oh & that he was hotter than hell (pun intended, lol) or that she would be in the running for the same job as Deacon another dead newbie. Who has a chip on his shoulder & an instant dislike to her. Throw into the mix one hot angel - Gabriel & one cute dead football player too - Ryan. A quartet of hotties all help her with the job at reaping souls. Add two talking dogs/soul trackers Zeus & Hades. Both of which made me laugh out loud. So funny but then so is the book in general. Amazing book that i seriously loved. Cant wait for the next one
That's a very different book to all the other reverse harem books I know. First we switch from this life to afterlife. And to say the love interests are very different, yes, it's correct.
Its a short first book and I didn't get a good grip on the main character. Some facts didn't add up and the story had a very fast pace. But I liked the Idea and loved the very unique constellation of characters. I plan to reread and take a step further to discover more of the whole picture.
A quick read that had some early potential but quickly became a little silly in my opinion. I tend to go into books blind and this one was one that sort of back fired on me. I struggled with the main character being constantly enthralled by the men around her. She had the potential to be a bad ass female main character and instead was equal parts insecure teenager and sexually desperate young person. This repeatedly pulled me out of some rather well crafted action scenes. At this point I have no intention of continuing the series.
I listened to this on audible and was pleasantly surprised as to how much I enjoyed the book. Getting hit by a bus when crossing the road to buy carrot sticks for lunch is a terrible way to go, however, Sasha soon finds out that is not the worst thing that’s going to happen to her. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters were great. Plenty of drama and a couple twists thrown in, cannot wait to see where this one goes. The narration was good, not my favourite voice but definitely not the worst, the did bring the story to life
So I am entirely glad this is a slow burn. I try to stay away from RHs that have a younger female lead, they squick me out. I am glad I picked this up and am entirely hoping it remains PG - PG13. Very much geared toward a younger audience though. Doesnt mean it's not entirely enjoyable. FMC definitely acts her age, not in a bad way, more naive. I will read the second book.
