Drawn from the photographic archives of the Atlanta History Center, Women in Atlanta details the dress, decorum, and diversions enjoyed by Atlanta women from about 1837 to 1979, as documented in black and white. The results is a fascinating social history which, while often concerned with fashion, offers a tantalizing glimpse into the daily lives of the ladies who constituted Atlanta.

By its nature, a photographic account of history tends to emphasize staged, premeditated depictions of life which do not always capture the full range of human experience. These depictions are valuable in their own regard, however, and provide a touchstone whereby further examination is then possible. While most of these pictures date to the two decades before and after the turn of the last century, the authors have provided an interesting array of selections. Of special emphasis is the effort to insure that black women are also well-represented.

The only downside to this work are the chapter introductions, which are intended to provide context for the following pictures but are either so pedestrian or so lacking in nuance that they are effectively useless. While the captions occasionally stray into the same territory, they are primarily filled with useful and engaging information.

I would recommend Women in Atlanta to anyone interested in Atlanta or women's history, or for individuals interested in reenacting, interpreting, or historical dress: the images are loaded with inspiration for different period looks.
