I couldn't find a whole lot of information about Dinah Miller. She has written may books, a number of which feature the main character of this novel, John Treehorn. I don't know if Ms. Miller is of an indigenous American background, but she writes with a convincing command of Indian knowledge as well as the racism which Native Americans are made to suffer.
There are many organizations represented: the FBI. ATF, CIA, NNP, etc. And there are lots of characters, all quite believable. Because of all this I did found it sometimes difficult to determine who was speaking, and the author sometimes makes some jumps without spelling it out for the reader.
I have enjoyed the John Treehorn Mystery’s and I do enjoy the way the author writes and how she develops the story. But, in this book I think things were carried a little to far. It may be that is what people want and helps sell books. Just my thoughts.
This is as complicated as real life. Who lives, who dies, who does what, why. About the time it seems obvious, it isn't. The obvious had but isn't, there is a touch of anger in all of us. I love these books. I was prepared not to - yet another set of Native detective with no-doubt issues... Well, yeah, duh. I recommend starting with the first book. Otherwise, you might mix-identify his issues. Here, his life is complicated by, well, his life. Which is complicating his job. And interfering with his life. I would cry for him. He doesn't need, or want, my tears. He is a man.
This book was wonderful to read. It took me to places and yet I could stay with the story by remembering who the characters are. I am a bit troubled that a US court judge was such a bad character. I look forward to the next book and hope it will be as intriguing as this one has been.
This isn't the first Dinah Miller book I have read but it is the best! In fact it is the best FBI mystery novel I've read in years! It is so complex; the characters are wonderfully built as is the plot. I didn't want to stop reading to do anything else. I am looking forward to the next John Treehorn book. Keep 'em coming Ms. Miller!!!!
This is a Wonderful book I highly recommend the whole series! Intense, multi-faceted, complex and as beautiful as the land and it's people, but not always an easy place to be.
This book kept me up late, I simple couldn't put it down. It takes a deeper look at Treehorn, his life, with one foot in two worlds. How loyalty, duty, love and personal history shape his life and maybe more importantly who he really is. Loved the book so much!! It was exciting, intense, upsetting and absolutely wonderful!! I can hardly wait for the next one!!
I read all four books in this series and could not put any of them down. Dinah Miller is an excellent writer who kept my attention and anticipation on edge. Look forward to her next books,
An intense complicated book that adds to the story of John Treehorn’s life. It was confusing in places, with a lot of characters, murders, murder weapons, bad cops, and John past history on the reservation. It came together at the end, although violently. Looking forward to the next book.
495 pages of murder, pay back and law enforcement! Treehorn , Shady and Parker continue to hunt the killers down----each in their own way but somehow they stick together. Very revealing about two names and you will find out who Benito Del Toro is!
It is hard for Special Agent John Treehorn to sometimes walk the edge between the white world and the Indian world. This book tells us about his two friends, one of whom walks the other side of the law, and the other, a spook.
Complex and captivating story and characters. Allow for uninterrupted free time to finish reading once you’ve started. Looking forward to the next one.
I rated this book highly because it's both insightful into another culture and is impossible to stop reading. It reflects the injustices that still exist through prejudice and hate. From what I know of the reservation, much of this is still true.
Convoluted, twisted. Lots of twist and turns. Letting this one settle down, needed to read it a second time to really get the gist of the story. Powerful!
Once again Dinah Miller has written a wonderful, suspenseful book. The characters are memorable. I enjoy how the book informs you about the world of the Native Americans. I feel you learn something with every book in the series. I’m looking forward to the next book.
Received as a free gift, this book was SO MUCH MORE than i expected it to be. Fabulous setting, strong, interesting characters and a brutal, killer story line. Im following this author now, and will certainly read more.
I've read all of the books in this series. They're well written mysteries, but not very well researched. The culture and customs of the Navajo people are not well represented in the series, and little things like incorrect service weapons being used by the FBI are bothersome to me. While a time frame isn't given in the stories if an FBI agent is texting someone they're not going to be using a revolver as a service weapon. Picky, yes, trivial, yes, but merely my opinion.
All that said, I have found the series an entertaining read.
This was good, but It was harder for me to keep up and keep track, with what was going on. I cannot understand how anyone would not like these books. The only reason that it got three stars, and dnot my customary four -- is because I struggled keeping up and keeping track of who was who, and where they were.
I was disturbed by the shocking and detailed violence described in this book that was (according to the author) carried out by Native Americans in modern day times and tacictly approved of by the so called hero of the book and his boss, the director of the FBI. I had read one other book in this series and it was not like this one. This book was also somewhat confusing as it assumed you knew the background of all the new characters that appeared and left way too many questions unanswered.
It’s difficult to talk about this book. In the past I’ve read many books that occur on reservations and I enjoy the opportunity to see another way of life and to try to understand the thought system involved. A murder mystery, which this is, must have a murder. But as the warning at the beginning of the book said, some of the violence and sex was graphic. Still, I enjoyed the book because the characters were complex and the plot was very involved. On balance, it’s a good read.
Twist and turns somewhat confusing. Peyton, Parker, Paul and Peter! This isn't a book you could read a few pages and wait a couple of weeks to pick up again. I enjoy the story line and will definitely complete the series. Thank you for writing a book without all the foul language!!! That in itself is great talent!!! Recommending your books to all my friends. Thank you, Deb Smith
A multi-layered investigation on Navajo lands, with Treehorn FBI, Shady CIA and their friend. Questions are answered, the lost are finally found and prices are paid. Dinah Miller’s Treehorn Mysteries are masterpieces of deception, teamwork and loyalty. Always loyalty.
Great edge of your seat storyline. Love the characters, a lot of guesses trying to figure things out. I like that! Good ending. I like the friendship of Treehorn, Parker and Shady. Shady is quite a character who's worthy of his own series. Ms Miller don't ever kill them off PLEASE.
