Civil War veteran Stick is down on his luck and searching for his long-lost sweetheart. Whittle is an orphan on the lam who feels like he owes the world a favor. When they meet up out West, they become partners in a high-stakes adventure that includes a kidnapping, travel by tornado, and a dramatic rescue mission.
I loved this book as a kid and just re read it. It's a cute, light hearted western about two best friends. It teaches kids vocabulary and has a pretty dry sense of humor, which I'm really into.
Based on the subtitle, "Wanted for Mischief, Adventurous Behavior, and a Tendency to Get in Trouble", I started this book expecting a swash-buckling Western adventure of the type geared towards pre-teen boys-- something along the lines of The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog. The story moves slowly at first, and I considered giving up. But I only give up on the most horrid of stories, and this was nowhere near that low. So I continued, traveling the dusty plains of Texas with Stick and Whittle and their trusty horses, and soon I couldn't put the book down. Stick and Whittle surprised me with its depth and complexity. If you're looking for fast-paced adventure for a reluctant reader, this probably isn't it. But if you're willing to take a bit of time to let the story entrance you, then I strongly recommend this tale of two unlikely, but very lucky friends and their Western adventures.
Stick fought with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Now, in 1872, he is making his way east from Texas in an attempt to find the sweetheart who was mistakenly informed he was dead. On the way, he meets Whittle, an orphan from Chicago who swears he owes the world a favor. In this time and place, two is better than one, so they join forces, finding adventures, avoiding danger, and finally winding up in the midst of a rescue mission. • No swearing or sexuality issues • Narrative has holes, but it is entertaining
Melvin Fitchett and Melvin Smyte meet by a river. By them having the same name they put nicknames to each other: Smyte named Fitchett, Stick and Fitchett named Smyte, Whittle. Both travelers alone made a packed journey together. Stick had only one goal which was to return with his love Evelyn. Along the way, these two opposite opinions men got closer as great partners. Friendship and teamwork are things shown in this tale. Even if Stick is twenty-seven and Whittle is sixteen this pair is unrepeatable. A significant friendship can be just by the river. It is a good book to pass with a little taste of excitement in the end.
This book is about a man on a journey and on his way he meets an unusaul boy who becomes his partner and friend. This boy brings life and joy to his travels. I recomend this book to people who have a bestfriend and from day one yous became close and friends. This book is basicly how two opposites come together. This book is very touching and has alot of action. This book was great.
A somewhat predictable book reading as a grown-up, but this is a fun Western book and it actually made me laugh at times.
Basic themes of friendship, cross-cultural relationships, and good vs. evil makes it a good book for teens. Would recommend to any teen looking for a quick fun read.
That this book deals with two man being wanted. For bad things that they have done in the past. There behavior and stealing things got them wanted. So it goes that fair because of there trouble making ways.
