5 stars.
I love it!! This is such a great book for little kids to let them know that its ok to feel blue. Even characters such as the famous, Big Bird have sad and gloomy days and that's ok. We all have them but they come and go. This wonderful book also suggests to us some ways on how to try and cheer ourselves up. Big Bird gets his help from his friends on Sesame Street and realises too that they also sometimes have bad days. This gives children ideas on how they can start to feel better.
I always love Sesame Street books and this one hits all the stars because it was able to capture the Sesame Street feel through the illustrations. I grew up with Sesame Street books and this one took me back to my childhood. The illustrations were so soft and perfectly detailed and the choice of colouring was spot on. 5 stars for the story but 5 stars also for the illustrations. Would definitely recommend.
I always love Sesame Street books and this one was able to capture the Sesame Street feel through the illustrations. The illustrations were perfectly detailed and the choice of colouring was wonderful. The emotion shown in the pictures is well done and you can see Big Bird changing as the story continues. Big Bird is having a blue day and Elmo shows up just in time. He takes Big Bird around Sesame Street to talk to all their friends and find out what they do when they are feeling down. There are some great examples of things you can do to cheer yourself up when you are feeling gloomy. What a great story to show children that everyone has an off day and it is okay. It is also a great story to show children that it is okay to talk about your feelings. This is a great book for a family library and for kindergarten classrooms. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
I have been a fan of Sesame Street since I was a young kid many, many, many years ago. And while I was growing up, Big Bird was my favorite. So of course, I was drawn to this book.
My dear sweet friend is having a very rough day. Nothing is going right for him and he is just super down in the dumps. Elmo stops by and tries to help Big Bird feel better. They go around town and visit their friends to find out what they all do to stop feeling so blue. It's fun to see what all of their answers are!
If you're a fan of the Sesame Street characters, you're going to enjoy this book. They are always a lot of fun and I think it helps kids to see familiar characters going through the same feelings and situations that they are going through. You can use it as a springboard to talk about feelings and what you can do to make yourself feel better.
The illustrations are filled with all of those favorite Sesame Street characters and are filled with lots of joy, especially as Big Bird's day starts to turn around. I have to say that I am so used to reading the older books that these modern pictures threw me a little bit, especially of Big Bird. He looks different than what I'm used to. But the more that I page through this book, the more I am getting used to it. I know that it's just the style of this particular illustrator, who of course is not the same as the ones from 35 years ago.
Overall, I gave this book 4 stars. It would make a cute addition to your children's book library.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
What I Loved: This book focused on children's feelings of sadness and how they can cope with those feelings. The rhyming in the book was perfect, I didn't stumble over it at any point.
How I Felt: The plot didn't have terrible things happening to Big Bird to make his day bad, just the normal kind of issues that make any child feel sad. He loses his teddy bear, a visit he was looking forward to is canceled, etc. This made it so easy to relate to for my child. The way Big Bird gets out of his sadness was a perfect solution for a child. We talk to someone!
To Read or Not To Read: Perfect for a toddler through early elementary ages! The story is easy to understand with pictures to help. A great book on handling feelings.
What's This Book About Anyway? Big Bird is having a bad day. His teddy has gone missing, he spills in his nest, his family cannot visit; all leading to feelings of sadness. He doesn't know what to do to feel better, but a friend comes along and gives him just the right advice to help.

Title: Big Bird's Big Bad Day Author: Craig Manning Copyright: 2020 Format: Picture book
This colorful picture book features the classic characters of the children's show Sesame Street. In the story, Big Bird whose day starts out all wrong. From the bad weather to spoiling his breakfast, to not being able to see Granny Bird, and losing his bear, Big Bird is having some trouble keeping a smile on his face. His friends give his suggestions on how to stay positive and how to turn his frown upside down.
The reason that I selected this book for the Pre-K Bookshelf is because of the familiar characters and the lessons on emotions provided in the story. Young children need to about their emotions and how to navigate them. This book shares some practical tips given by the various Sesame Street characters. They suggest various activities that children can do to brighten their spirits on a sad day.
Even the happiest kids (or birds!) have very bad days. Poor big bird has a terrible day where it seems everything that can go wrong is going wrong - with problems that kids can definitely relate to! It also provides multiple words for feeling sad, and shows how many familiar Sesame Street characters handle being sad - they get hugs, they share how they're feeling, they take a break and count to 10, they distract themselves, they sing a song and do a dance, they get active, and they help others out. Even though Big Bird had a bad day, at the end he was able to turn his day around with the help of his friends. A very cute book. I was provided with a digital ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my annual review.
Mr Oliver struggles with feelings a lot so I figured this would be a good book to help him understand. It misses the mark a tad bit for what I wanted (I wanted anger and not sadness) but that's on me and not the book. It's a very good story about empathy and understanding why people are sad.
Please note that the dates may not be accurate as we read it during the pandemic and I didn't really keep track of what dates we read when. Some of these books we read multiple times so they will have multiple read counts. We had taken them out of the library a week before everything shut down, and were unable to get new books.
Everyone has bad days now and again, and little kids just don't know how to handle those big feelings. In comes this book from Sesame Street, ever patient and kind, in explaining how different activities and being with friends can help cheer you up. I especially liked how it took time to explain Big Bird's sad feelings and why he was feeling that way, and that Big Bird didn't instantly feel better with his friends but that it took time to turn his feelings around.
Sesame Street is a classic. I loved it as a child and both of children have loved it as well.
It is wholesome and positive. This book was no exception. Big bird learns what it is to be sad and how to turn his frown upside down. Great job rhyming with Ernie.
My son is a HUGE Elmo fan and he enjoyed this book a lot.
Highly recommended for kids, as it's colorful and a lightread
One thing tho, at the first it said that no one wanna play outside with Big Bird which made Big Bird sad. One of the solution is to see how the others found their happiness. It seems like everyone else having fun without Big Bird, lol
A fun read tho, especially for me that not really familiar with Sesame Streets gang
