I seem to have collected several books of collections of bedtime stories, and usually they sit on the shelf looking nice but not being read. I'm trying them out to see which ones I like. This one was refreshing because they aren't the same stories as in all the other books, and they aren't massaged to conform to modern parenting sensibilities. They use the word stupid (or talk about stupid behavior without naming it). There are corpses and killing and monsters and Tom Thumb being swallowed whole twice and surviving. These are stories of people being foolish or greedy or clever or brave. They are from an older tradition. I wouldn't want all our stories to be like these, but again, I found them refreshing. (Caveat: no women protagonists, only plot pieces. I might have felt different about reading this to a daughter.)

I think I'm just not a big fan of the Brothers Grimm. I was happy when kiddo brought this home from the school library, but found myself editing or jumping over bits as I read to her. Maybe it just didn't age as well as his other works.
