Two Hearts. One Curse. Zero Time.

A century ago a spiteful witch cursed Edmund. Ever since, he has lived as an immortal house cat--short one life. Anselm is a mildly depressed vampire with a soft spot for the feline he calls friend.

They live together as equals, companions for eternity--or so they hope. Then, the witch who cursed Edmund long ago dies. And suddenly, he is human again.

In a race against times cruel hand, Anselm and Edmund must make a decision. Do they find a dark witch and reenact the curse that plagued Edmund so they can be together for eternity? Or . . . does Edmund give up forever as a cat to be with Anselm for now as a man?

This book didn’t make a lot of sense.

There was hardly any world building, and the world building that was there was completely contradicted a few pages later.

Like when Edmund just turned human again at the witch’s office and borrowed Anselm’s suit jacket to cover himself up. I would think he couldn’t go out on the streets only wearing a suit jacket, but instead of getting him clothes, they decide to go to the market first. So I figured paranormal creatures were out to mankind and everyone knew about them, so having someone walking around practically naked would be attributed to ‘shifter behavior’. But then I find out humans don’t know about them, so there went my theory.

Then Anselm takes Edmund to a store to buy him clothes and immediately offers him a skirt. Now men can wear skirts just fine, but they both acted like it was an every day thing and completely normal for Edmund to try it on. I would think with Edmund last living as a human more than a hundred years ago, he wouldn’t be so quick to try on a skirt, since he would be used to different times. That entire scene was incredibly awkward, and not sexy at all.

Also, Edmund was walking around with a tail and cat ears, but neither thought to cover them up. Apparently they figured people would think he was cosplaying or something. But I think someone would notice that the tail and ears were real! Especially since Edmund moved his tail a lot. Fake tails don’t do that.

These were just some things that didn’t make a lot of sense.
I was also bothered by the lack of emotion in this story. Especially Anselm seemed to have no emotions. And that’s why it was so strange when they suddenly kissed. I had no idea Anselm even wanted to kiss Edmund!

So despite the promising blurb, this book didn’t deliver.

I really wanted to love this, it sounded original and the blurb had potential. Reality was I struggled and skimmed to get to 50% before throwing in the towel. DNF.

It's basically cute cat-boy fangirling. ohhhh look ears and tail! There's nothing more to it.
The changing-room scene was bizarre to me. It didn't fit with anything else, but hey catboy visual!

Neither author is known to me but the impression I got was that they didn't really collaborate/agree - the little word-building there is seems contradictory. A chapter breezily sets a scene then the next hastily tries to talk us through the -conflicting- groundwork! One chapter tries to set-up some depth; depression, loneliness... but then that's forgotten. The result is a confusing mess that left me unable to visualise this world with it's paranormal aspects. It made it hard to connect to the either character though Edmund at least had a trace of personality.

The storyline has logic fails and there's no cause-effect. I could see the wish to be together but the chemistry is lacking to the extent I found them getting flirty uncomfortable, it seemed out of place; one minute they're in bed then the next page Anselm is out trying to get him turned back into a cat! Nothing in between. No thought or conversation.

Could have been amusing and cute but too underdeveloped and disjointed. Couldn't connect, wasn't interested. Pity.

This book is full of fun, frivolity, tenderness and a tiny bit of sex. Edmund's two orgasms happen so fast that you might miss them completely! LOL I absolutely LOVE Anselm and Edmund. The interplay between the two is just priceless. They don't get a HEA due to the fact that there story continues in the next book... they do get a HFN even though the book ends with a lot of stuff still up in the air. I will not give that away but will say that I found the ending very satisfying. lastly I want to mention the wonderful job that author did inserting humor throughout. I laughed out loud multiple times especially at some of Edmund's antics. Over all this book was such a fluffy bit of fun and I can't wait till the next book is released!

This is the first book in The Match Made In Hell Series. An interesting idea that I hoped would be great. Unfortunately, I was left with a lot of questions. Questions about the world when, where and how did it get there. I mean specifically about the paranormal aspects of the world. And who could tell what someone was if they were a paranormal. Where were the divides between types and status? Because it’s written like all of this is obvious when your clueless. The characters needed more detail and information about them. There is switching that happens (and not to spoil the story I will leave it at that), but it had me confused at times about what the state of the character was. I would be thinking that it was one way when it actually was the other. There were contradictions as well for example there is a statement about not have to buy meat to save money as though they don’t have any and them you find out that they live in an expensive apartment because one of them has a lot of money. The writing was okay, but it really needed help especially with detail. I really wanted to like this book, but I struggle all the way through it. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.75 stars

This is a sweet and charming shifter story with a creative premise that I really enjoyed. From the start, I was drawn in as Anselm walks into his apartment to find a naked man, only to realize with a shock that it is Edmund suddenly in human form. The bond between these two is clear as they are totally committed to one another, even when they are just human and cat. At first it seems like Anselm is being selfish (and he is to a degree), as his first thoughts are how the curse breaking means he could lose Edmund. But we see him both recognize his own selfishness, as well as learn about his depression and fear of being abandoned, which helps mitigate that. Even with Anselm fearful of Edmund turning human, it is still clear that both of these men are fully committed to one another’s happiness. They are quite sweet together and there is a nice friends to lovers vibe that happens here as Edmund and Anselm’s emotional bond begins to expand into a romantic one during Edmund’s human periods.

5 *give me more* stars out of 5

Edmund is a human who has spent the past century as a cat and as a companion to the vampire, Anselm. Anselm is a centuries-old vampire whose only connection to life is Edmund himself. Their contented life together is thrown into disarray when the curse on Edmund starts to weaken and Edmund becomes human again.

With Anselm encountering Edmund as a human for the first time, there is a whole lot of new dynamics that come into their relationship. It soon becomes clear that a simple return to the way things were earlier is not an answer with seemingly every day bringing Edmund closer to his demise while Anselm remains immortal.

I want more.

The first thing you need to know about this book is that it is part of a series and I am cautiously optimistic that we will get to know more about Anselm and Edmund.

These two are such fascinating characters and the story is written in such a simple fashion with a plot that is so captivating that despite the fact that this book must be a hundred and fifty pages plus easily, it felt much shorter.

This book sets a very unhurried pace which complements the immortality of these characters. Anselm is a vampire so old that he makes Edmund seem like a child which is amazing given that Edmund himself is atleast a hundred years old. I really liked Anselm. He was in the unique position of having lived so long that he had tired of it and the only thing keeping him alive is his relationship with Edmund.
Edmund has been cursed to live nine lives as a cat but when the curse that keeps him a cat starts to weaken Edmund shifts to a human form with cat ears and tails. Edmund was an immensely likeable character. He is so caring and worries so much about Anselm that it is quite clear that he feels quite deeply for Anselm. Being human after a century unlocks a whole new potential and direction for their relationship to develop. It is interesting to see how they both react to this new development.

The shift causes Anselm and Edmund to gain new perspectives on their feelings for each other and it was so fascinating to see these two, embrace these feelings and experience them differently than they had before. I really liked the pace and the idyllic tone of their story because everything seemed magical.

I am very excited to read more about these two especially with what happens at the end and I can't wait. Fingers crossed for book two.

Cover Art by Raven Brooks. I really liked the cover for this book, it really captured the tone of the book. Loved the use of the colour green in the background and how the cat’s startled blue eyes stand out.

One hundred years ago, a dark witch cursed Edmund to an immortal life as a cat. He was found on the streets by the vampire, Anselm, and the two have lived together ever since. When Edmund suddenly transforms back into a human (with cat ears and tail), they realize the witch who cursed him must have died. Edmund isn't sure he wants to be human again, not if it means he will age and die, leaving Anselm behind. For his part, Anselm worries about what the future holds for Edmund. Together, they embark on a search for another dark witch who can cast the curse again, and Edmund must decide if he wants to return to being an immortal cat and companion or a mortal man and lover.

Not sure what to think of this. There really wasn't much of a plot. It's hard to assign it a genre, too. There was no mystery, although the authors could have made one of it in regards to what happened to the witch who cursed Edmund. Since they'd been together for a century, there was no meet-cute to kick off a romance. Frankly, it read like catboy fanfiction. I've read and enjoyed catboy fanfiction before, but I knew what I was getting at the onset. This was just sort of meandering and pointless. Characterizations were rather flat, and I was somewhat nonplussed by how tiny Edmund was. He often sat on Anselm's lap or was carried around by him, which...meh.

Lackluster--two stars

So slow, too slow, almost DNF

Way too much back story and story building, it was tedious. Nearly gave up at 30% because it was boring (only stuck it out because it was preferable to writing a report for work). It was almost 70% before there was any meaningful interaction between the two MCs and then raced towards the end where it ended pretty much in a cliffhanger. Cannot be bothered to read any more in the series if they’re all like this. Probably won’t read another from this author either.

This was a quick rather sweet read. Edmund was cursed by a hateful witch into cat form. He lives with Anselm who is a vampire. They have been living together and have grown very fond of each other. One day, something happens and Edmund transforms back into a man, but he still has his tail and cat ears. It turns out that the witch has died & the curse has been lifted. Now they have a decision to make, find someone to curse him back into a cat so they can stay together for ever or take what time as a man and find what has been missing all these years. So we get to watch these two try to find someone to curse him again and watching them grow to love each as men. I loved how this issue is resolved in the end and can't wait to find out what the favor is going to be. This is a new to me author & I can't wait to read more.

All reviews are voluntary and my honest opinion.

Eight lives is a sweet story about a cursed cat, Edmund, and his Vampire friend
Anselm.

Anselm saved Edmund after he was cursed by a dark witch a hundred years ago. Now the curse is wearing off, and Edmund keeps shifting between man and cat. If he becomes a man, he can become Anselm's lover, but he'll have a human's lifespan. If he stays a cat, Anselm will never be alone.

This didn't feel like a paranormal novel. Yes, there are vampires, werewolves, demons, curses and a city for all beings not human, but the book feels light and fluffy, cute even. The end closes with a sweet hea, but there's enough potential for another volume. Despite Anslem being the older of the two, and Edmund having a mere twenty years as a human, Edmund is the more emotionally mature party, making sure Anslem feeds himself. It's endearing.

This was a pretty good paranormal type story set in an alternate world where shifters, vampires, and witches are all around. Edmund was a human cursed to live 9 lives as a cat. After he lost his first life, he was found and taken in by the vampire Anselm. They have lived as bestie companions (of vamp with talking cat) for 100 years. One morning, Edmund is all of a sudden human and their world shifts as Edmund goes between human and cat and as they figure out that they like being together as men.

I really enjoyed the first 90% of the story. The last 10% just seemed to go super fast with not enough answers. I read somewhere that this may be the start of a series, or at least there will be a follow up. I hope that’s true. This book focused on Anselm and Edmund, and in that respect it is complete-they are together and in love. I was just left waiting for the other shoe to drop at the end.

3 stars!

I was lucky to get an ARC of this book but it goes live May 20.

This blurb drew me in. It sounded amazing. I mean who doesn't love the idea of a faithful pet one day being uncursed to live as a human. The book was good but I found it just left me wanting. I wanted the story to be deeper. I wanted to know what year it was and I wanted to understand more of this world. There were hints but I wanted more.

The story does end fairly abruptly without much resolution. I'm assuming book 2 will pick up where book 1 left off but it didn't really set us up for that either.

Overall, a solid effort if you like magical worlds with vampires and cursed humans.

Anselm is a several centuries old vampire who's fate is inextricably linked with that of Edmund's, his friend and roommate, a boy turned into a cat by a witch he rejected. Until now, they've lived their life very peacefully and without any surprises. However, one day everything changes, as Anselm comes back home and finds a naked young man inside his house. It turns out that something disturbing is happening with Edmund's curse, because he starts to turn from a cat into a human being and then returns to his cat form again. But the main problem is the fact that as a cat Edmund was immortal, and now nothing is the same. That's why if these two want to continue living together, they have to find a way to stop the time and all these changes.

To tell you the truth, before I finally decided to read "Eight Lives", the first volume of "Match Made In Hell" series, I had been debating with myself for a long time whether this novel would be the right choice for me, as I had been afraid of too much drama. However, I decided to give this story a try, and now I don't regret a single moment I've spent with Anselm and Edmund. "Eight Lives" turned out to be a great book in every respect. The authors presented the story of two friends in such a sweet, delightful, charming way that they immediately captured my heart. And it's because Autumn Breeze and Ashley Chamblee didn't focus on the drama associated with a possible parting ways or death – although, in fact, these topics often are mentioned here – but they emphasized the close relationship between two main characters, their feelings towards each other, their attachment. In this way, they also made "Eight Lives" a warm and unique novel, simply beautiful in its own way.

For a moment, I want to go back to the above-mentioned topic of the character's mutual feelings, as it is, in my opinion, one of the great advantages of the novel. I'm very pleased that the authors have made Anselm's and Edmund's feelings toward each other so strong that at the beginning, these two unfortunate souls don't really see the difference between friendship and love. Well, their love, both friendly and romantic one, has been evolving over so many decades that we can fully understand why they don't quite distinguish one from the other, and if we take into account the fact that all this time one of them has been a cat, we can undoubtedly explain their temporary lack of understanding of their own feelings. I won't deny that all of this was one of the reasons my heart was melting when I was reading this novel.

I would like to write a few words about the characters of "Eight Lives" as they are also the advantage of this novel. Let's start with our leads, that is Anselm and Edmund. In fact, in terms of their external, physical appearance, their creation is not particularly detailed, but we immediately get an insight into their souls, get to know their characters, personality and thus immediately fall in love with them, because they really deserve our deep feelings. To tell the truth, the authors managed to create them in such a way that the reader immediately wants to take care of them and, if necessary, protect them at all costs against any evil that may threaten them. As for the side characters, we also quickly fall in love with them, because they have something truly magical in them that makes us want to know more about them. The more so because in the novel they are largely presented in terms of their characters, and that's what makes them who they are, not the details of appearance. So tell me, how can we not fall in love with them?

Finally, I would like to refer to topic of a universe of "Eight Lives". In general, the world of the novel is not particularly clear, I would even say that we only have some sketches of it here and there, but we largely understand its dynamics. Much richer in details and clearer is everything that is closest to our characters, and their immediate surroundings in a given situation. Thus, we get to know the universe of "Match Made In Hell" series very slowly, as we are filling the gaps in it step by step. That's why, in a sense, we don't have much of a real world building here, but we do have the impression that to a large extent it's enough taking into account the fact that it's just the first volume. After all, we don't know what to expect in the next installments, and thus the continuation will undeniably be a surprise for us.

To sum up, "Eight Lives" is really a great beginning of an interesting, charming and exciting series which has a vibe of sweetness, so if you hope for heartbreaking drama, you should know that it's not this kind of a story – at least for now. What's more, we read this novel with great pleasure, interest and a big smile, and when it comes to the end, we feel this great desire for more. Personally, I can't wait to continue this adventure!

Wszystko jednak ulega zmianie, kiedy pewnego dnia Anselm wraca do domu i zastaje w nim nagiego młodego mężczyznę. Dwójka przyjaciół musi więc znaleźć sposób, aby zatrzymać zmiany i móc nadal żyć wspólnie.

Cute set up for a story but it definitely feels incomplete. Anselm is an ancient vampire. He has a cat named Edmund who used to be human but was cursed by a witch because he fancied her brother rather than her. Fate brought Anselm and Edmund together and have kept them as companions for the past hundred years. One day Anselm comes home and finds a nude male stranger in his house and his cat has mysteriously disappeared. Cute, right? It reads much like a YAOI manga with a chibi cat boy with ears and a tail, full of blushes every time the gorgeous vampire strokes his ears, and the unusual references to crossdressing. Borderline taboo, but that is addressed in the story when the neighbor says he thought they were already dating and Edmund is aghast since he's been a cat for the last hundred ears. It is suspected that the witch who cursed Edmond has died and the curse is fading so they go in search of another dark witch to renew the curse. Does Edmond really still want to be a cat though? Especially now that he knows what Anselm's fangs feel like? It's just over so abruptly and I could have used probably another two hundred pages of cat boy. If the story was expanded and continued, I'd definitely pick it up.

I liked the story but it was kind of a mess and could be a lot better. It reads somewhat like the first draft.
Some thing just did quite fit.
I liked the naive voice of Edmund but after 100 years even living a sheltered life he should not be so clueless and childlike.
Did one of the authors ever had a cat? Since when are they totally helpless, not having a thumb is not it.
Also the knowledge of the human population did not make a lot sense, either they know or they don't. I get that maybe not all want to know the nitty gritty of what goes bump in the night... but still basic knowledge must be there.

For a story this slow the end came a bit surprising and also to easy.

Edmund is a man who was cursed to be a cat because he messed with a witch's brother. Anselm is the Vampire who found and took Edmund in. now 100 years later the witch who cursed him is dying and Edmund is becoming human and fears he will die as the curse won't stop time from aging him after it is fully broken. Anselm and Edmund love each other and try to find another witch to curse him but Edmund find a demon instead and makes a bargain with it. I feel this story ends to soon because I want to know what favor Edmund will have to do to pay for his part of the bargain.

Funny light reading.

Just what is one to do when your reliable life is thrown into upheaval. Fear of abandonment driving depression that could ruin it all. Yet true friends work to find answers together. Maybe change isn't bad. Just hard to find the honesty and love to work it through.

Picked this one to read because I liked both the cover and the sound of it. Short and sweet. I liked how the relationship between the two progresses without words. A nice friendship to lovers but felt a little abrupt at the end. Curious about El and Cas.

A nice little story with an unusual idea that could have used a bit more of a bang to take it from "nice" to "great". It was all a little anticlimactic. But I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in the seires.

Eight Lives is a relatively quick urban fantasy/paranormal read. It caught my attention with the concept of a vampire’s faithful century-long feline companion suddenly becoming human. Since I hadn’t read anything by either of the authors previously and liked the idea of the story, I decided to dive right in.

Anselm, our vampire, has been around for a pretty long time. His attitude has pretty much become one of apathy, though he clearly has a soft spot for his best friend Edmund. You know, Edmund the talking cat who used to be human and who seems to be turning back into a human again. The conundrum of that for Anselm and Edmund? They both want to stay together forever, which seemed to be assured as a vampire and cursed cat…but if Edmund returns to being human, will he now grow old and die? Neither of them wants that to happen, so they set out to find a way to keep him as a cat.

There are times when the story felt very surface-level as not much about the world they live in was fully explained—the world building was mostly cursory, and sometimes the characters felt lacking in depth. But there are also some interesting tidbits (like Edmund’s sensitive tail), and secondary characters I found intriguing (their neighbor’s werewolf boyfriend, and Anselm’s vampire friend who helps them out). I thought that the solution Edmund found was a bit out of the blue though, and that his and Anselm’s relationship at the end of the story felt more like a happy-for-now rather then a happily-ever-after.

Overall, this was a cute story and it did pique my interest for more in this world, though I’m hoping things will be more fleshed out in future books in the series. 3.5 stars for Eight Lives!

I was curious of this story after reading the blurb, that I’m game to try on new-to-me authors’ work. EIGHT LIVES is the first entry to Autumn Breeze and Ashley Chamblee’s “Match Made in Hell” series. Having no familiarity with the authors’ works, I was clearly out of my depth here - let me just assume their works are supposed to be fluffy and lighthearted. But unfortunately not the sort of fluff and jovial that works for me.

The book is an AU paranormal featuring a mix of supernatural creatures as well as human; told alternately from Anselm and Edmund’s POVs. The world building is pretty scattered and unclear to me. The core of the story was finding answers to Edmund’s cat/man situation. This is a matter that - in my book - remain unanswered until the end (was the curse fading means Edmund would be human and catching up to human ordinary age and life or stay a cat but less immortal?). The characters they were looking for someone with the answers, but aside from off page unsuccessful quest, all I see was them either getting frisky with each other or drunk at bar or gambling. The answer to their prayer came out of nowhere and - idk, it felt questionable too.

Characters wise, these guys struck me as rather annoying as they whine by way of talking most of the time. Not only that, every one of them appeared so very gullible to survive in this world. I’m speechless! In short, this book may be a hit to some readers with their elaborate cute atmosphere, but not this one. Too many bumps in the road to the finish line...

3.75* Eight Lives is the first book in the Match Made in Hell series by Autumn Breeze and Ashley Chamblee and the first book I've read by either author. I enjoyed reading this book and will be interested to see what the rest of the series holds.

Edmund was cursed many years ago by a witch, to remain in cat form. Anselm found him when he was first turned and they have lived together since then. When the curse starts to lift, neither Edmund or Anselm are sure what to do or whether Edmund will still be immortal like Anselm, but they won't live without each other.

I really liked Anselm and Edmund's relationship together in both cat and human form - a simple companion to the start of a romantic partnership but both nurtured each other. It was interesting to see how that part of the story line played out and I am looking forward to seeing more of their relationship.

The main issue I had was that I felt it could have been so much more in depth - I wanted to know more about both of them, about the neighbor and the werewolf boyfriend, about the city they lived in, about the curse itself and what happened to the witch, etc. I hope each of these things are expanded upon in future books. Would recommend.

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review.
Coming home to find a strange man standing in his living was a surprise for Anselm. Finding out side stranger was also his best friend of a hundred years Edmund, was a even bigger shock. After all he was cursed to cat form by a witch to never be human again.  As a vampire Edmund was the longest running friendship Anselm has had, can he deal with the curse breaking? Where does this leave him? When Edmund turning back to human  form takes longer to turn back, their friendship takes a new turn. With Edmund willingness to stay a cat for the sake of Anselm not enough to prove he want to stay be his side no matter the out come. Be that witch, vamp or demon Edmund was going to go through it, making a deal just may come to be bad or a good thing. what was Anselm willing up? Everything in order to keep Edmund with him.
This was a great read, it grabs your attention from the beginning to the end. Thoroughly enjoyed this thrilling adventure of willing sacrifice for love. Can't wait for more from this series.

What an unusual, unique and interesting story!
I was intrigued by the premise, held captive by the plot and its execution :)
Edmund is cursed to be a cat by a spurned witch. He lives with Anslelm, an ancient vampire. When Edmund unexpectedly switches back to human form, he and Anselm are surprised, so much so that they are forced to confront a few issues:
What does this mean for Edmund's mortality?
What to do with the growing feelings that have been about 100 years in the making?
What's next when one makes a deal with a demon?
Sadly, for me, only one of those questions is answered in this story which leads me to my burning question- when will the next book be out???!
I really enjoyed the dialogue between the characters - the MCs and the others had some funny/snarky lines.
I'm definitely hooked and will look for other books by the authors *while waiting for the next book*.

I requested an ARC and these are my own opinions.

Anselm and Edmund had been companions for a century, but as cat (Edmund) and human (Anselm). Suddenly Edmund is transforming into a human at random times and neither know why. Anselm is set on helping Edmund turn back into a cat to live forever.

“We’d been a pair since the beginning of the twentieth century and…in reality, he was all I had.”

The more Edmund was human the more Anselm wondered if Edmund would really want to stay with him.

“Would he really stay? I’d never known anyone who had.”

Edmund on the other hand was loving the attention Anselm was giving him in is human form.

Both men were so sweet, and I could really feel they cared for each other.

This was my first book by Autumn Breeze and it didn’t disappoint. I cant wait to read more from this author.

This Was 😻Fangtastically😻 Cute!

Anselm, a centuries old vampire returns home from grocery shopping for his beloved cat, Edmund to find a naked man in the middle of his living room. And that, dear people is how this quirky little story begins.

I loved this fun little paranormal romance and I am crossing my fingers it is just the beginning of many adventures for our MCs. The cast is great, and the chemistry is excellent. There are secondary characters I would love to know more about. **hint... hint... Wonderfully crafted world building, and good pace. A quick read I was sad to see end.

You will enjoy this one! 💜 Vampires, cursed humans/kitties, demons👹...what's not to like?
