The Hour of the Lily was written in 1987 before the Russian retreat from Afghanistan, and before we in the West suddenly decided Afghani freedom fighters were Islamic terrorists. It is set in Afghanistan and tells the story of some of those freedom fighters, some of the Russians who tried to rule there, and an English reporter cum spy who falls in love with an Afghani freedom fighter.
It is a well written, pacy thriller, with plenty of turns, some of which are unexpected and make you want to keep turning the pages. It also gives a good background into Afghani culture and will hopefully show readers indoctrinated by our own government and military establishments that things are not as simple as they hope you will believe.
