So this story reads like a poorly written spinoff of Buffy the Vampire Slayer story. Girl who finds out she has "warrior" powers is destined to fight and kill demons. Works in a bookstore... has a zany guy friend....has a guardian who teaches her to fight and kill demons....can't tell friends or family she is a demon hunter....Sound like Buffy??? at least she didn't fall in love with a demon. The story is disjointed and has little to no character development. She goes from a high schooler whose family is forced into the FBI witness protection program because of her dads job. To having migraines to being attacked by a demon and killing it. To being told she is destined to hunt and kill them and she is like ok! Tell me more! The story reads more like a tv show than a story. The story doesn't flow. It bounces to event to event with friendly banter thrown in the mix.
I wasn't sure what to expect from this book when I got it free from Kindle. Books about demon-slaying and any other-worldly fiction aren't my go-to reads.
Overall, I found the book easy-to-follow, but the pacing is odd. Pieces of the plot and magic rules that seem extremely important are rushed over (or skipped entirely), while other pieces that seem to have no long-term bearing on the story are explained in detail.
I have no plans to read the rest of the series, but I'm also fairly confident I'm not the author's target reader.
Removed from her life in the middle of the night by the FBI, she didn’t know what to think. She just knew that her father had found out something that made others want to silence him. No one would know he was an FBI agent, either. She was no longer Alex but now Allyson and her sister, brother, and father had new names also. She had her life to hide and a new life to live.
This story starts with a well-known or used premise, and it missed its own built-in avenues to add a genre, suspense. I believe that the addition of a little suspense would have rounded out the story a little more. Instead, we were given a character that met challenges with ease, which was a little flat for this reader. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy the story, but there could be more to it.
I will give this story four stars out of five stars because I like the premise and the story that sprouted from it.
Just your typical highschool experience with a guardian and finding out you're supposed to be a demon hunter all of a sudden. I'm sorry, but this storyline has been done to death. DNF at 40%.
