　……かわいいアーニャ、わたしは自分でもたえず自分の死ぬことを考えている（ここで真剣にそれを考えるのだ）。それから、お前や子供たちに何を残してやれるか、ということも。みんな家には金があると思っているが、なんにもありゃしない。いまわたしは『カラマーゾフ』という重荷を背負っているが、これはうまく完結させなくてはならない、宝石細工のように仕上げなくてはならない。ところが、これは骨の折れる冒険的なもので、おびただしい力を持っていかれてしまう。しかし、これはまた運命を決する作品で、これがわたしの名声を確立してくれなければならない。さもないと、なんの希望もなくなってしまう。
