The best way to look at this collection is a companion piece to Hickman's Avengers/ New Avengers run. The first 14 issues, the first being co-written with Hickman, features the expanded Avengers team from Avengers by Jonathan Hickman: The Complete Collection Vol. 1, Avengers by Jonathan Hickman: The Complete Collection Vol. 2 and Avengers by Jonathan Hickman: The Complete Collection Vol. 3. These 14 issues have an over-arching story of 3 separate incidents requiring different members of the team to go and resolve. As great as Hickman's big ideas are, he isn't exactly a character writer, especially on a team of 30 Avengers, so this book allows some characterisation and further fleshing out of the new members in the squad. It also attempts to create a network of like-minded global teams by introducing a Chinese team and re-introducing a European one. For the most part this is s solid story that provides a good support to the main Hickman book.

This is followed by 2 Avengers Point issues - #34.1 and 34.2. This actually syncs up to the end of Avengers by Jonathan Hickman: The Complete Collection Vol. 4 and before the little time jump at the start of Avengers by Jonathan Hickman: The Complete Collection Vol. 5. Actually I felt that where events begin in volume 5, a story gap was missing - so I think the best place to read this volume is between 4 and 5 of Hickman's run, unless you want to read certain issues between Hickman's run then I can't help you there. The point issues were part of Marvel's marketing team to be more new reader friendly. In this case the first issue focuses on Hyperion and the 2nd on Starbrand. Honestly I don't find either new reader friendly because unless you're reading Hickman's run, I can't see why they would hold any interest. The Starbrand issue also features forgettable Humberto Ramos style art and doesn't really suit the story Sam Humphries is telling, so it's a pass from me.

There are also 2 issues to tie in to the truly terrible Avengers & X-Men: AXIS event and they're also the most forgettable thing here, as they don't have any ties into Hickman's larger over-arching story.

After that it is set-up for Sunspot, Hyperion and Namor on the other books, so I think that it's good in that regard.

Based on my review you can see that this is a heavy support book for Hickman's Avengers run. If you're reading Hickman's run also, I recommend this volume - between 4 and 5 of the Complete Collections, to avoid spoilers, as the last 4 issues would reveal the big status quo change of Avengers by Jonathan Hickman: The Complete Collection Vol. 4. But it more importantly has nice character work for that run and explains things Hickman doesn't have time for. If you're not reading Hickman's run, I can't recommend this book because of how many things it links to. I read it before and it's fine but it's a much more rewarding experience when you can see how it supports that run.

This was fun. Met a lot of characters I didn’t know about.

Plenty of Sunspot here but why is he coloured so light? Does nobody know the history of this character? Also, why is he such a chauvinist? Ewww.

I didn’t like Starbrand and he had way too much to do here. He’s so whiny and literally everyone is more interesting than he is.

Felt like the women were once again shunted to the side. Why? There are so many men already, can’t we have the ladies in the spotlight for a few 100 pages out of 400?

I did still enjoy the book and the art was lovely most of the time.

The major storyline of this volume was underwhelming. It was three different situations being dealt with by three different groups with basically nothing interacting.

Maybe I'm becoming a bit overfed on my new superhero explorations, but there are just too many super villains. And too many superheroes. Some even come and go in one comic. What happened to, y'know, normies?

Oh, that's right, SHIELD has a Chinese rival now. Cos, y'know, the amount of money needed to build that shit is just EASY to find.

So, some people in tight costumes go punch some other people in tight costumes, and just kinda let them leave, rather than, like, killing them! Or at least locking them up in super prison.

Having a strong and coherent plot would distract me from these flaws that seem inherent in the genre.

The first half of this collection is pretty good as the story follows a narrative with a full beginning, middle, and somewhat lackluster end, and the one-shot stories featuring Starbrand and Hyperion were strong entries as well. The second half consists of disconnected stories that were obviously part of larger happenings around the Marvel Universe and didn't have a lot of context on their own, leaving me feeling somewhat confused and disappointed as a reader.

This starts off really strong, with some distinctly modern narrative devices and focus on characters. But about halfway through, it smashes into whatever Event was happening and very quickly becomes a total mess of side stories to stories I don't know. Great first half, but ultimately just another example of Marvel wrecking everything with crossovers.

I quite liked this. I would read it on its own thw next time, maybe between Hickman 2 and Secret War.

Outstanding artists here. Usually telling one off character studies. Deep dives into second string characters which was refreshing. I've really come to enjoy Sunspot. Buying AIM opens so many opportunities. Cannonball has a kid!
I really like Hyperion in Hickman's run and this only added to that.

A good collection of gap-fillers and character exploration. Some of this felt like I was just trying to get through it before I start “Time Runs Out,” but some of this was really enjoyable. I was surprised how moving I found the solo issue centering on Hyperion.

I read the first 3 volumes and really liked them.
Vol. 1 & 2- 4 stars
Vol. 3- 3 stars
As soon as I started volume 4 I was just confused and bored. There are other Marvel comics I can read that won’t bore me.
