The Witching Hour

Rate this book
When Australian journalist, Misty Friday, receives a mysterious letter summoning her to England, she expects to find her elderly relative. Instead she has a witch of a time, stumbling across danger, a cat, bad coffee, and the enigmatic John Smith, who may have his own reasons for being in Britain.

The murder of her relative brings more questions, some of them arcane.
Can Misty solve the murder before she becomes the next victim? Will she survive her new cat's attitude? And more importantly, will she find good coffee before it is too late? Or is that simply witchful thinking?

Misty Friday receives a letter that sends her speeding to England From Australia. Her job agrees to send her so she can get a first hand look at some of the paranormal factors in a story they are looking at.
Upon her arrival she finds her aunt has died, a doctor show up to pronounce her dead and arrange for the body to be removed. Her real doctor know nothing about it.
She is now in a race to find a page from a rare book of alchemy that is supposed to rejuvenate a person and allow them to live for an extended time frame. Two different sects are after the page. Misty doesn't know which one is to be trusted.
The mysterious John Smith, and also the new person Douglas (no last name given), and the elderly neighbor, Cassandra. All, who are asking about the missing page.
She is also the proud new owner of one of the orneriest cats you'll ever come across.

Another fun and entertaining story in this unusual world that Morgana Best has created.

The Witching Hour is Book 2 in His Ghoul Friday Cozy Mystery Series.

I am absolutely LOVING this series. This book is a stand alone story, but I highly suggest reading A Tale of Mer-der its equally as fantastic. I do love cozy paranormal books and the author has done a great job with this series.

I really like how complex the protagonist Misty Friday is. She is a strong woman that is relatable. Misty is an Australian journalist for a paranormal publication and receives a mysterious letter requesting her to go to England to see her elderly Aunt. When she arrives at her Aunt's home she is found dead. Misty knows that the death is suspicious, she just has to prove it before she's the next victim.

We also get to meet Merlin, the snarkiest of cats! I love him and I am excited to see what he will be up to in future books. The story line is so complex and well written that I had no idea who had committed the murder. The other characters in the book were also very well thought out. I could relate with Misty because she was always trying to get her hit of coffee, and it was not to be found. I laughed so hard when she attempted to make her own coffee without a coffee pot of any kind.

The details the author described in the history of the area were so detailed I felt like I was right there.

You do not want to miss this book , I cannot wait for the next book to come out. This is already becoming a favorite series of mine.

Misty Friday manages to convince her boss, Keith, that she should combine writing about several paranormal places and events for magazine articles with an emergency trip she needs to make to help her Aunt Beth with something important. She talks him into the plan (which is the only way she could afford to go there) and leaves as soon as possible. Unfortunately it wasn't soon enough. She knocks on her aunt's door and soon discovers she has died in her living room. The smell of garlic overpowers the smell of death, and while looking around, Misty can not find the source of the garlic smell. She does find the doctor's name and phone number, and calls him. He comes right away and contacts the undertaker for her, telling Misty that her aunt had died of a heart attack and had a history of heart problems. Misty decides that since she is there, she should stay and do her work, even though she cannot help her poor aunt.

Various people show up at the house, a friend of her aunt's named Douglas, a neighbor, and even Auntie June! Douglas offers to take her to places for her articles, and she manages to get some done, and research done on others. There is confusion over a missing page from a rare book that her aunt had donated. There is confusion over how her aunt really died. There is confusion over secret societies. There is confusion about who to trust. In fact there is more confusion on Misty's part than known facts. Yet she continues to plug away at her aunt's mysterious death, the missing page, and the secret societies and connection to that missing page. Her acquaintance from the first book, John Smith, also shows up and dislikes Douglas. So much confusion and strife!

This second installment is another delightful book of mystery wrapped in confusion and lack of knowing who to trust and who not to listen to. Poor Misty can't hardly get a decent cup of coffee-there is no way she can figure it all out. Aunt Beth's cat Merlin is her inheritance, and the cat seems determined to scratch her every available opportunity!

Once again, the author's sense of humor shines through and I found myself laughing at Misty over everyday things that shouldn't have been as difficult for her as they turned out to be! Case in point. Making coffee. Rather than get a simple coffee press, she is determined to boil the ground coffee in a sauce pan, strain it the best she can, and drink the disgusting gritty mess even though it is gross. Not just once, either! And when she thinks she is being haunted...well you need to read the book for yourself and have a chance to laugh!

I liked the way the author combined known and unknown in the book, and just not people. There was one of the "Vampire" bookstores in England like she went to in Australia. She noticed funny street signs and compared them to ones found at home. There was even the difference between funeral services at home and in England.

From the beautiful cover to the final line in the book, this was a good mystery, an interesting history lesson, and fun book to read. Be sure to grab your own copy and enjoy the continuing Misty Friday saga.

I am getting attached to this series. In this book Misty is in England after her Aunt Beth sends her a letter requesting to see her. Upon arrival Misty finds her Aunt Beth has died. Misty goes to her Aunt’s house and interesting things start happening. As Misty meets the people who knew her Aunt questions arise. What was her Aunt doing? Did she die naturally or not? Nope, not telling. I loved seeing familiar names and reading about them in this story. That was a surprise for me. I’m not use to that even in paranormal cozy mysteries. It was wonderful! Aunty June makes an appearance, I’m happy to report. I really like her. A new member of the family is also introduced. I’m looking forward to more on that once they return home. There are also a couple of characters that I’m wondering if they will show up again. I’m thinking they will and it will keep things interesting. I had a good time reading this book. It was interesting and fun. I’m betting you will too.

Edited because I forgot to rate it.

Misty received a letter from England asking her to come immediately but the reason is not really clear. So she talks the head of the paranormal tabloid magazine she works for into paying the airfare so that she can stay with the relative and write some articles he wanted. But when she gets there, she finds a cantankerous cat and the recently deceased body of her Aunt Beth. And then the confusion began! Historical mischief, odd happenings, misdirection, and more! And more laughs than ever!

I loved this book. Even though it's the second book in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone. Misty gets word from her aunt in England that she has something that she must give to her in person. Just as she gets there, she finds her aunt dead and she is forced into more intrigue than she was really looking for. I'm looking forward to the third book because of the things that occur in this book.

History, fiction and the paranormal blended into one.

A good blend of historical facts mixed into a cozy with paranormal undertones. Okay I'm still waiting to see what her powers are? She must have some! The only criticism i have is that she's a bit too naive and trusting. Come on any normal person would have kicked up a stink if you had a pretend doctor come to the house where a death occurred.
A letter has her pushing work to send her to England. Her aunt wants to pass on a legacy to her. A horrendous trip, getting bowled over at the front door and now a dead body. Her aunt! Phoning the number of the doctor (pinned in the kitchen) she is assured that the death was natural, even though the smell of garlic remains. A pushy neighbour, a determined collector and a missing page from a notorious book. What do the founders of the Hell Fire Club have to do with things? The more she thinks about it the more fishy it sounds and now her Aunt has come over from Australia and John Smith has turned up too. Will she get to the bottom of things and find the elusive page? What does all this mean for her?

This storyline is really getting intense. Misty gets a letter that her aunt has something she needs to give her. So Misty goes to England only to find her aunts body. As she knows no one there, she doesnt know who to trust. She decides that she needs to find out what happened to her aunt and soon realizes that her aunt was murdered. Enter, Cassandra, the neighbor, and Douglas who says he knew her aunt as a friend. Her old friend whom she calls Aunty June, has bad feelings about the whole situation and tells Misty not to trust anyone. Then mystery man, John Smith appears in England too further complicating everything for Misty. As the mysteries get more intense, the missing page that everyone wants needs to be found before anyone else is killed for it I really enjoy this book because you never know whats going to happen next..and more importantly ,who can Misty trust? Handsome John Smith or strange Douglas? I have one issue with this book that isnt a bad writing situation, its just not something that interests me..and that is the story has too much historical facts in it. Im not sure if its important to the story, but for me, it takes away from it, so I just skipped over those parts. For that reason, I only gave it 4 stars..but the storyline itself would be a 5 star.

Mind Blowing Good!

The Witching Hour, second in " His Ghoul Friday" series, by Morgana Best, is the best book I've read this year! No spoilers here, so I'll just say there is intrigue, secret societies, magic, history, and danger. We find out more about the characters from book one, and have new things to wonder about for book three. Twists upon twists! Absolutely delicious reading! Loved it!

This is the second book I have read in this series and it just keeps getting better. The mystery and intrigue flowed throughout the book and it was hard to tell who could be trusted and who could not. A very well plotted story. Hope the next book in the series lets us know how Merlin progresses and more information about the mystery and secrets hinted at in this book. Highly recommend this book to all mystery lovers.

Loved this book. I am loving this series. Misty is fun to follow what is happening to her and I can't wait for the next book in the series. Misty arrives in England to visit her Aunt Beth only to find her dead. It is up to Misty to find out what happened and to keep from being the killer's next target. And why is John Smith in England? Read the book to find out what happens.

THE WITCHING HOUR

Misty Friday is called to England to visit her Aunt Beth. Misty cons her magazine company to allow her to go by investigating local paranormal sites in the area. She arrives and her aunt is dead. Mysterious people keep showing up.

This is a tangled book of scenes as Misty tries to sort out her aunt’s story which seems to mesh with the story for her magazine.

Misty Friday goes to England for work only to find her Aunt Beth dead on the day she arrives.
She eventually learns that she has inherited Aunt Beth's slightly psychotic cat Merlin.
Misty gets entwined in Aunt Beth's death, secret societies and a quest to find the "missing page".
This book is full of twists and turns. I loved it!!!

Lots of cattitude!

A new mystery for Misty Friday. A light-hearted paranormal witch cozy that was so fun! This time she’s off to England!

And I love that there’s now a cat in this series! I love cats! Can you say ‘snark’? Because that’s one snarky cat!

This mystery had me guessing until the end. Oh yeah, this is a binge-worthy series! Guess what I’ll be reading next?

The mystery was great and kept me hooked. I absolutely love Aunty June. Such a great character with a mystery all her own. Love how she pops up all over the place. Interesting twists and good reveal about a bit Misty’s family. Great how John Smith keeps showing up too. Misty seems too trusting but great twist at the end.
