William Pène du Bois was an American writer and illustrator of books for young readers. He is best known for The Twenty-One Balloons, published in April 1947 by Viking Press, for which he won the 1948 Newbery Medal. As illustrator he was twice a runner-up for the Caldecott Medal.

The Twenty-One Balloons is the work by Pène du Bois that WorldCat reports most widely held in participating libraries, by a wide margin. His other most widely held works are five books written by others, which he illustrated (below), and the two Caldecott Honor picture books, which he also wrote.

From 1953 to 1960, Pène du Bois was art editor of The Paris Review, working alongside founder and editor George Plimpton.

Very clever. I bet du Bois had fun thinking of ways to incorporate nursery rhyme characters into this holiday story.

What made this village particularly fine was that it was the home of Mother Goose, the poet. She lived, with her big Goosey Gander, in a bookstore on the corner. ... The villagers all knew and loved Mother Goose because she had looked after each of them at some time or other in her nursery. She would write poems about them that made them laugh.

Nine of the rhymes, the ones most central to the story, are reprinted at the end of the book.

Mother Goose’s village is preparing for Christmas when they hear startling news. Mother Goose and Goosey Gander have been kidnapped and taken into the old abandoned Queen of Hearts Bakery, probably to be cooked for Christmas (is what the villagers surmise, at least). How shall they rescue them?

Although it’s a little morbid if you think about it too long, it’s just a funny story with all of the characters we know and love.

Great pictures by Pene du Bois!

Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!

I have to admit that this was from a Bookmooch, as I have always adored this author's stories and illustrations. Finally, after this long time obsession has driven me to find out more about him, via the somewhat reliable Wikipedia. Interestingly enough, he was a founding editor (albeit art editor) for the Paris Review! Wow.
