Hunter--a man fighting for his mom's life and for revenge.
Lorena--an old friend of Hunter's, now a cop, trying to balance her own life with the job.
Andrea--Marcus's mom, misssing her old life, one of secrets and action.
Linda--Hunter's mom, dealing with cancer, addiction, and a past deal with the devil.
Dennis--Hunter's friend, just out of prison, trying to put that life behind him.
These six people, seeming strangers to each other, find themselves sucked into a revenge scheme that will take some of their lives and all of their innocence.
Find out who's a casualty in the criminal masterpiece (collecting issues 1-6) that is perfect for fans of Breaking Bad, The Wire, Othello, and 100 Bullets.

Act 1 pulls together all of the individually released issues comprising Act 1 of Standal's Rebirth of a Gangster. Beautifully illustrated by Juan Romera, Standal's writing grips the reader and pulls them into intriguing world of bubbling conflict between the realistic and relatable characters. I've written glowing reviews of each of the 6 electronic issues comprising Act 1, so the greatness of this comes as no surprise. Having a hard copy brings this to a new level. I've long sought to feel the story unfold in my hands and to be able to see Romera's illustrations bring the story to life on something other than a small cell phone screen. This is an achievement for Standal and Romera and I can only hope that they continue working together for a long time to come!
I love having the first set of issues all together in one book! I'm really able to insert myself into the noir, gritty world of Marcus, Hunter, Lorena, Andrea, Linda, and Dennis as their lives further enmesh and entwine. And what a neat cover!
A tale told with plenty of thrills, mysteries, and character development, CJ Standal delivers a solid story that will engage fans of The Godfather, Breaking Bad, and fast-paced crime novels.
"Rebirth of the Gangster Act 1: Meet the Family" is a comic book story form written by C.J. Standal with the drawings done by Juan Romera. This is the first in a series of books.
I got this book from NetGalley as a Review Copy against an honest review.
I was little flustered and disappointed by the copy provided that refused to open properly in Kindle or my pdf reader (came without the dialogues) and finally I opened it piecemeal in various apps to get some proper reading pleasure.
The art is black and white with the cover pages in color and its stark lines looks clean, hard-hitting and fabulous. The story is dark and the characters are interesting. The chess men cover looks good but used. Some of the characters are worth investing in and there is a thin laced humor that doesn't overwhelm the story. The graphic novel stands out with some blunt scenes featuring murders and the B/w accentuates the actions. Enjoyed reading what I could.
