ELISE KOVA is a USA Today bestselling author. She enjoys telling stories of fantasy worlds filled with magic and deep emotions. She lives in Florida and, when not writing, can be found playing video games, drawing, chatting with readers on social media, or daydreaming about her next story.
This was quite a wild ride, meshing together different themes and tropes, mostly from fantasy but also from sci-fi. As a whole it appears as if either the author was indecisive or simply wanted to let loose and allow each iteration to be it own world. Yes there is a steady common thread between them all, but it does change your understanding each time, which made me wonder how many holes I can puncture through it. It starts out as a retelling to the classic wish granting genies, forever forced to.. but with a new multiple perspective, which serves as a prelude for all things to come.
Even more awesome when you get sucked in, I couldn't put this down. May have a problem with that but NOPE, anyways when do we find out about the rumored merfolk attacks. 😁🤘🏻🤣
Narrator does a good job; not on my favorites list, but she did fine.
Cool idea with the Society of Wishes, and the mystery surrounding the society. Jo has a survivor mentality, which is great, but she lacks common sense a lot of the time and her morals aren’t the greatest at times. She can be an annoying character. Jo is a new member of the society, and isn’t handling things very well. Her existence has been removed from any of those who knew her; her family included, so she’s taking it very hard. It also doesn’t help that the new people in her life; those in the society, aren’t very clear on what the society is trying to accomplish and aren’t exactly welcoming. I didn’t really care for many of the side characters. Plus, there’s something really odd going on at the society that causes Jo to lash out at times. Also, Jo can’t give up on her past life, so problems ensue when she tries to get involved there. I do enjoy the connection between Jo and her main romantic interest; it takes awhile to come together, but I like the vibe going on there. I do not like that Jo has “romance” with someone that is not the love interest for this series though; it just puts a damper on my enjoyment of the actual romance. The series can move a bit slowly, but after reading all the books of the series I enjoyed the series. Overall, an entertaining series!
Admittedly I have read other works by Kova and have loved each one more than the last. I came across this a while ago and started with the Prince of Gods - not realising it was more of a novella/back story. When I started reading a Society of Wishes it seemed dull in comparison to such a rich, magical first read. So I put it down, with intent to try and reading again some other time as I struggled to get into it.
This time however - I read the authors suggestion to skip it and read it between the last two books (in publication order) and the experience was vastly different. I fell in LOVE with this series. The romance that spanned centuries and worlds had me in tears constantly. The world building was amazing as usual, especially with so many worlds to build on this series. All the little details came to make them so much more realistic.
I loved each and everyone of the characters that was brought to life in this series, each had their own personality and time on the page without it taking away from the main story at all. Something I usually find many authors struggle with. Their character development was great.
5* rating for yet another unbelievable fantasy series by Kova for me (and I now believe I need to give Larsh a read too!) x
This is such a brilliant twist on traditional Greek mythology making it both bigger and more relatable than I've ever experienced. I loved the ride, the final book most especially.
The premise is fascinating & the writing solid, but everything else is lackluster at best. I didn’t care about the characters & the series requires extreme editing. It’s ridiculously long and unbearably tedious.
