Decent primer on not all but a lot of things India, from an outsider's perspective. Partially based on anecdotes from travels and talks, that provide some local perspectives at times. Good for disproving some still prevalent western misconceptions about India. Though some of the comparisons with China uphold western misconceptions about Chinese history, and his chapter on Indian cinema feels like he read and copied a travel brochure without having seen any or talked to anyone knowledgeable. Though it is nice that he at least mentions how important it is outside of Europe and the US.

Veel over dit boek kan ik eigenlijk niet vertellen. Het is een leuke manier van een geschiedenis vertellen, maar of het daarmee ook echt een leuk boek is dat weet ik eigenlijk niet. Het andere verhaal van deze schrijver trekt mij veel meer aan. Daar gaat het namelijk echt om een verhaal met gebeurtenissen en personages, hier krijg je gewoon de geschiedenis van India verteld. Ik moet wel toegeven dat ik er nog niet veel van wist, dus dat het wel leerzaam was.

There's not really much to tell about this book. It's a nice way to get to know some more history, but that doesn't make it a nice book to read with that. The other book of this author appeals to me a lot more. That story is supposed to be a real plot with events and characters, while this book was just telling the history of India. I must admit I didn't know much about it before I started reading this, so I did learn a lot.

Ich bin ein bisschen enttäuscht. Nachdem ich von dem Autor das Buch mit dem Inder, der mit dem Fahrrad bis nach Schweden fuhr, um dort seine große Liebe wiederzufinden, gelesen hatte, war ich in einer gewissen Erwartungshaltung. Dieses Buch ist meiner Meinung nach nicht so schön geschrieben und auch ein bisschen verwirrend. Der Autor ist ein paar Mal nach Indien gereist und hat dort mit Leuten über Indien geredet und das alles hat er "verwurschtelt" zu einem Buch, das kein Roman, aber auch keine Reisereportage und kein Sachbuch ist. Ist ganz interessant, um Indien kennenzulernen, aber ein wirkliches Lesevergnügen ist es nicht...

One of the most amazing books i have ever read! It is a must have for anyone that is somehow interested in India or even south asia in general. The book covers a tremendous amount of topics, be it politics, food or wildlife in India. It is particularly important because it shows the discrepancy between what we (westeners) often think of India and what it really is in a way that is both easy to understand and very entertaining.
I can personally say that this book changed my whole perception of the asian/eastern (in the book it is referred to as southern) world in terms of history, economy and todays society. I would definitely recommend everyone to read it.
