Grab a fresh journal and your favorite pen. Then kick off your shoes, and jump into the pages of WRITER GET NOTICED with both feet! The user-friendly exercises alone are with the price of admission. They revealed and explained things about myself I didn't know before. My favorite was discovering my strengths. But the author, Colleen Story, doesn’t stop there. She goes on to show you how to leverage them. I highly recommend this book!

I am a writer, yet I’ve lost my passion for it. I started my blog to review books. Okay, it was mostly for the free books. In writing reviews, I found that I enjoyed writing. Now, that I am writing more than reviews, I feel like I’m shouting my story to a blank wall. My readership is small and social media plays favorites in regards to reaching your audience.

As a fan of Colleen M. Story, I decided to read a complimentary copy of her newest book for some help. Who knew that I could use my strengths to find my author theme, to power up my platform and create a business blueprint. Mostly, I’m excited about discovering what sets me apart as a writer.

As I read through this book, I realized I had a lot of homework to do. Yes, Colleen gives you assignments! As I worked through these sections, I learned a lot about myself that can be used in my writing. You will also learn:

What You Really Want From Your Writing Career
I know I want to write more than book reviews. I have an idea of what I want to write about and have been doing so. Yet, I have never asked myself what I really want from my writing career. This was the hardest question to answer, yet I see that in doing so, I can move forward.

How Your Strengths Benefit Your Writing
Not only did I learn how my strengths benefit my writing, I learned what my strengths are. Again, homework! You’ll have to read my follow-up post to find out my strengths. I also learned how to make these strengths even stronger.

Why Heroes are Critical to Your Writing Journey
I realized that I do have a handful of heroes. I did not know until reading this how they play into my writing career. While I’m no hero, I also learned how to see myself as qualified to write even when I’m not feeling it.

How to Push My Business Forward
What business? Yes, my writing career (yours, too) is a business. I now see it that way, rather than a hobby. This is a result of discovering what I really want from my career. Thank you, Colleen for walking me through that important first step!

To move forward, we must make decisions. I was the indecisive slacker until I discovered a decision-making system, in this book, that works. I now can move forward with clarity instead of playing the waiting game.

How to Build a Lasting Author Brand
Finally, I learned about building a lasting author brand. While I know some of this already, I can actually apply it alongside all the new stuff I’ve discovered about writing and myself while reading this book.

What’s Next?
Homework! Order the book, grab a pen and notebook, and discover your strengths and what you really need to bring more readers your way! Enjoy!

Every writer despite his or her expectations of the future, or accomplishments in the past knows the invisible feeling. Like any artist or creator, we write both for ourselves, to serve the muse, but for others as well. A beautiful dress unworn is not serving it's purpose; so too, a beautiful essay or novel. Colleen M. Story has written a book that every writer should read.

WRITER GET NOTICED! is the type of book one must read with a pen and paper in hand. There are exercises and thought experiments meant to help build not just an in-the-moment snapshot of where a writer might be today, but also as archival footage. You will be able to return to the insights--your insights--again and again if you take her advice and engage with the activities.

Throughout the book, Colleen uses astute references from science and academia, as well as stories and ideas from other other writers. Her style is approachable--a coach not a dictator. I follow her Writing and Wellness blog and recognized several of the voices she quotes in the book. For me, this amplified the feeling that Colleen and the writing community at large was behind her words. Writing is, I believe, a team sport.

A key takeaway I gleaned from the book is this: Building a writing career takes time. Those stories we have all heard of a miraculous talent miraculously discovered are the stuff of fairy tales. And while none of us can predict the magic collusion of timing, topic, and trend, we can take steps to be ready when the tide rises. Investing in a long-term writing career means understanding what makes you unique, then building a structure around it. An architect looks at the plot of land before her and seeks to build the best, most beautiful home she can erect on THAT particular plot of land. So too must a writer evaluate his or her unique landscape and construct the platform that works best for him or her. That's what WRITER GET NOTICED is all about.

In Writer Get Noticed! the author states that “it’s time to create an author platform uniquely right for you” as your “platform is the key not only to the success of your books, but to your personal and professional fulfillment as a creative entrepreneur.” To that end, she provides a number of exercises for you to do as you read the book. “Though you could simply read the book and learn some important lessons, I guarantee you’ll gain a lot more if you work with me as we go.” She’s right. Don’t skip these!

The book is well written and well set out, with each topic flowing into the next. The author illustrates her points with case studies of real-life authors, as well as with examples from her own career. This comprehensive guide will lead you through an in-depth analysis of your strengths and show you how to match your talents to your passions to create a plan of action. By the end of the book, you will have come up with your author theme, your tagline, and your mission statement, and a much clearer purpose of what you want to achieve as a writer.

This book will benefit all types of writers, whether you write books, articles, or blog posts. As a blogger myself, reading this book has helped me clarify my motivations and define my own mission. The author makes it clear that there’s more to being a writer than merely writing a book. Always remember that “there’s joy in the act of creation that fills our hearts and keeps us coming back to the writer’s desk. But sometimes we forget that it’s on the other side of that desk, where we interact with others, that we discover where we truly belong.”

Inspiring.

I received this book in return for an honest review.

As a still-recovering management consultant. I was intrigued by Story's premise of focusing on your strengths, passions, and abilities to develop your writer platform. Then, when I started reading, I was totally hooked. This is the FIRST guide I've ever read where I actually did the exercises prescribed by the author. What's more, I learned tons and enjoyed it -- and emerged from a rip-roaring read with a platform, direction, and the momentum to carry what I developed out into the world. Story shares plenty of examples from her own life and that of other writers--and is consistently generous, encouraging, and authoritative. I feel as if I've had years of frustration dropped from my writer's path. The best part of the book by far is Colleen Story: she is upbeat, positive, resilient, level-headed, and creative in her tone and flow so a writer doesn't feel tossed and lost in what can be overwhelming, daunting, and off-putting.

I have been coaching authors on their online platform for years. Colleen Story takes this much further and helps you take a deep dive into your entire author platform. She takes you by the hand and leads you on a journey to discover yourself, as an author. She shows you how to discover your strengths and how to harness them. There is homework and you must do all of it to really benefit from this book!

I am still a believer in have a strong online author platform with a website and social media but ‘Writers Get Noticed’ shows you crucial steps in setting up your author business for success. Not to be missed!

I had the privilege of reading author Colleen M. Story's previous book, Overwhelmed Writer Rescue and was impressed. So I couldn't wait to get my hand on her latest title - Writer Get Noticed! - offering guidance for writers/authors trying to navigate the ever shifting sands of the current publishing landscape and dealing with the frustration of achieving what they envisioned. Both books offer exercises throughout to help you work through the ideas presented in each chapter. But in Writer Get Noticed! the author takes you on a much deeper inward journey to discover your strengths, understand your decision making process, set goals, learn how to evaluate risk and more.

I've been writing for over 12 years now - first magazine articles and then two published non-fiction books, with more in the planning stages. Regularly I have found myself at a loss at times to understand what direction to take in marketing and how to most effectively use my time. And I've found anytime I feel adrift, the writing process slows way down.

This year I promised to change it up and try some more creative approaches to building my readership. I had already begun to make changes when Writer Get Noticed! landed in my hands. Perfect timing! My biggest take away right from the start was the idea of building a strong author platform around my brand, one I feel truly represents who I am as an author and what I am trying to do. I like that each chapter ended with exercises - important steps to help bring your personal voice to the surface so you can truly begin to understand your motivation and your strengths.

I have to admit, I didn't do the exercises the first time through. I decided to read the book cover to cover to get a feel for what the author was offering as a whole. Now it's time to go back to the beginning with my notebook and pencil in hand, to savour each chapter slowly and then thoughtfully work through the exercises. I don't want to rush the process, just let it unfold one idea at a time. In fact, I think it's time to go through Overwhelmed Writer Rescue again as well. It could prove a powerful combination.

“Writer Get Noticed!” by Colleen M. Story is a holistic guide for all type of writers. I don’t mean just the ones who are trying to make a living successfully as an author. I think that this book will also serve those who write because they have a message to share. For these folks, success is measured by sharing their message, which could just be one book, articles, a blog…etc.

Although the information of this book is geared to build the author platform, there is a lot of information that helps writers discover their strengths. The author presents this self-discovery process in three parts. The first one focuses on general aspects of what the writer wants. Chapters 1-4 speak from ‘Pursuing your own path’ to ‘Use Motivation to Find Your Truth North.’ Part II goes into a detailed trip inward in search of the writer’s strengths. Chapters 5-12 go from ‘Focus on the Good Stuff,’ and ‘Identify your strength,’ to ‘Your Author-Business Blueprint.’ Finally, on Part III (my favorite part…), the author reaches out to hold writers by the hand and helps them to act.

Colleen M. Story does an awesome job, sharing valuable information in a down-to-earth genuine voice in this well-written well of practical information and useful guide.

Furthermore, in Part III, my favorite as I noted, she takes this book a step up from other writing books, as she provides her audience with tools, scientific information about decision making, and advice on how to act on your decision and reach for your goals! Story is also able to offer all this information in an easy-to-read style formatted in a way that makes sense to the audience and visualizes the entire writing for publication process.

“Writer Get Noticed!” by Colleen M. Story is a Five Star must have in your library as an invaluable guide for writers. However, I am keeping it not just because I am a writer, but because as I found her information and self-discovery processes applicable in other aspects of my life as well! Well done!

Writer Get Noticed is a rather refreshing book for writers. Instead of focusing on a "one size fits all" approach, it offers multiple strategies for different kinds of writers to help them succeed with their platform. It is often brutally honest, giving a realistic view of what it is like to be a writer in today's world. Some of it is hard to hear, but it will help to give you a good and realistic starting point. The beginning of the book tells you to work through all the exercises to get the most out of it. I definitely recommend following this advice. There are a lot of exercises, but they are designed to help you work through different aspects of your personality, how you approach tasks, and things like that. Through the exercises, you gain a better insight into what types of writing and what kind of platform would work best for you personally. I liked how it tailored the advice based on the different results, but it still left it open for the reader to add to the ideas and examples. This is a great book, and extremely helpful for any writer looking to figure out their place in the market.

I thoroughly recommend the latest offering from Colleen M. Story, “Writer Get Noticed!” It’s everything a writer needs to uncover their strengths and use that knowledge to take on all the challenges that lay ahead. When I started reading this book I found it to be an engrossing read. Intrigued by the premise of using your strengths and skills to expand your writer platform, I read the book before tackling the exercises. I then read it again, notebook in hand and the results gave me a strong direction forward. I learned a lot and enjoyed it. The author focuses in on an individual’s strengths as a writer, shattering the traditional belief we should be working on our weaknesses. Once we discover where those strengths lie, we can go begin to utilize those strengths and talents to fit our individual style to our best advantage.

This high quality book helped me focus on what is important to me as a writer. It’s all you need to achieve a great author platform whether you are a beginner or seasoned author - great work!

If the words “author platform” make your eyes glaze over...it's because you haven’t read this book! Colleen takes her considerable expertise as a health and wellness writer and manages to make this topic captivating by focusing on the “why” as much as the “how.” Why are you really writing? Is it to get rich and win awards, teach and influence others, avenge an unhappy childhood, fulfill your creative potential, honor the transcendent? Whatever your motivation, your author platform is your ability to attract readers and sell books. Not knowing why you write in the first place can lead to years of frustration if you confuse what you think you *should* want with what it is you truly want.

Colleen shows how a compelling author platform connects what matters most to you with how you can best be of service to readers. I’ve read other books on writing and motivation, and Colleen’s is by far the most engaging. She writes like an encouraging and knowledgeable coach you can trust, someone who challenges you to push yourself but doesn’t dismiss the dread and anxiety that are essential to creative risk-taking. The exercises are thoughtful and actually fun to do, even if you don’t write them out in a journal (which she strongly suggests). The exercise on picking three Funeral Songs and the chapter on the Three Brains used in decision-making were revelations. Colleen writes with clarity about a topic where jargon abounds. I may not quite be ready to call myself an “authorpreneur,” but this is a book I plan to consult again and again.

Colleen has managed to put into one book a way for you to get real about writing as a career as well as how to dig deep into your own psyche to understand why that is important to you. The exercises are a MUST! This is not a scan and go type of book, nor is it a self-promotional book. It's real life, and how to dig deep to make writing part of your life. This book goes beyond the typical tips and tricks on writing. It's more than a how-to. It's finding out why and how to capitalize on your passion to become the best writer you can be. This will be one that you go to over and over, highlight, tag pages and use to remind you why it's important that you write. Definitely recommend putting it in your list of must-have books on writing.

Writer Get Noticed is the perfect companion to Story's Overwhelmed Writer Rescue, published in 2017. Having learned how to find more time to write regularly in 2017, I found myself with a growing body of work.i knew it was time to to find readers, but I couldn't find a clear pathway into that broad business. Writer Get Noticed answered my questions and gave me a solid path forward.

I did read the entire book before doing the exercises, and felt I'd gotten a lot of insight from reading alone. However, when I backtracked and followed the exercises in order, the material really popped.

Books and articles I’ve read in the past on author branding and platform tend to explain first why these tools are basic to the author’s success and then offer up a list of things we should do to establish a brand and create a platform. I’ve wandered through these manuals in a daze, wondering how on earth I can establish a platform based on four books in three genres, written over a period of ten years. I’m not prolific, I can’t seem to settle on a genre, and I love to experiment with style and voice.

Colleen M. Story has taken a different approach to guide authors toward that platform that will attract an audience to our books. Whether a beginning writer or one with several books published, any writer will benefit from reading Story’s suggestions, doing the exercises, and making a plan.

The most important part of that previous sentence is this: Do the exercises.

Most of us think we know who we are, have a good grasp of our strengths and talents, and understand where we’re going with this writing adventure. I thought I did too. Sort of.

By diligently reading Writer Get Noticed! and using my journal to write out the answers to questions in each section, I found that I have strengths I didn’t take into account and that all the books I’ve written, both published and unpublished, and multiple genres, do indeed have a common theme.

That’s a pretty big discovery for someone who’s old enough to have figured life and writing out by now.

I highly recommend Writer Get Noticed! by Colleen M. Story, especially if you’re willing to read and think about every page and do all the exercises. I’m glad I did.

This book really gets you thinking and digging deep into yourself to find out why you write and what you really want to get out of your career. It's a hands on book to help you create an author platform and I highly recommend it.
I will do a full review very soon.

This is an intense book that helps you discover a lot about yourself as a writer and makes you think about your goals. Armed with this knowledge you can focus on your author platform and work towards your strengths. The book helps you discover those strengths and use them to come up with your author theme and mission statement. It uses questionnaires and journalling to help you reach deep and discover not just what motivates you, but also your decision making processes and how you can use them to your advantage.

It's a book to take time over. You need to sit quietly and answer the questions honestly to get the most out of the tasks the book sets you. I really enjoyed the opportunity to focus on my goals, something that often gets lost with so many looming deadlines. Another highlight of the book was making me focus on my strengths and achievements so far.

The questions are backed up by research and well presented facts. As well as the soul searching questionnaires, and multiple choice questions in this book, there are also many examples of other writers' stories, which are often touching and always inspirational.

Writer Get Noticed! is an in-depth book I think many writers can learn from.

Note - I received an arc copy of Writer Get Noticed. A big apology to Colleen Story as I have been meaning to review this great book much sooner, but writing and editing deadlines got in the way. I hope to put all I have learnt about myself and the direction I want to take my career into action very soon.

Gets to the heart of why you write, and what you should be writing to best use your creativity and feel fulfilled. I liked the quizzes and "assignments" although I'm using a big white board instead of journaling. This book has really helped me focus on what is important to me as a writer. High quality, professionally written. I got a free advance review copy of this book from the author under no obligation to leave a review.

I had previously read and appreciated Overwhelmed Writer Rescue by the same author. I strongly recommend you get your own copy of that book. So when I saw this new book, Writer Get Noticed!, I could not resist. I love it equally as much and strongly suggest you buy your own copy of this as well as others to give as gifts.

Not only is Colleen M. Story well versed in her topic, she has such an engaging way to share her well researched findings, that you are motivated and encouraged to work harder at achieving your dreams.
She writes about recognizing our strengths and putting them to best use, working at strengthening what you already enjoy and do well, along with doing better at your less well honed talents.

Once again there are plenty of real life examples offered to help you understand how you can put these steps into play. You can even learn to enjoy the journey and appreciate the time involved as your work improves and you find your proper audience.

These are not books to read once and then shelve. Colleen M Story writes books to treasure and return to again and again as you grow.

Writer Get Noticed! Offers Readers a Useful, Easy to Read Format. Story creates a handy self-help book for writers in Writer Get Noticed! Her writing style is very organized and arranged in a very easy to use, easy to read manner. She touches on virtually every area of the author as she guides readers to find, develop and grow their personal author platform. With conversational chapters, she leads readers to workbook-style exercises allowing them to really tailor each chapter to discovering and developing his or her individual strengths and goals toward a successful career in writing.

Every Section of Writer Get Noticed is Applicable to the Developing Author. So often, we become so narrowly focused on who we think we are, what we think readers want, and what we see as the one end-result of a successful writing career that we lose sight of any other path or route through the bigger picture. I loved that this book brings the focus back to the basics and encourages the author to find himself or herself first and build a platform virtually from ground zero. Too often, we try to jump onto a platform that isn't authentic and, while it may work for some, isn't our platform to success. I am not a usually a fan of workbooks and exercises--but, I found each and every activity in this book to be relevant and applicable to helping me re-discover my strengths and build a platform from where I should have started long ago!

Would I recommend Writer Get Noticed! By Colleen M. Story? Each of us has an individual voice and unique skills and talents to share with the world. This book really encourages writers to notice themselves and those particular skills and abilities to help them become a writer that readers will also notice. This book is an excellent resource for new writers--but, even for writers who have found a little success but still feel adrift in the sea of information and distractions vying for readers attention. I have written in various areas professionally for several years--but, I have never truly found my space or niche. I would certainly recommend this book for author's seeking to build an authentic author platform the right way the first time--but, also for those of us who never really put all of the puzzle pieces of an actual platform together in the proper sequence!

I received a copy of this book from the author or publisher for use in a blog review. All opinions are my own.

A few years back, I read Colleen M. Story's fiction novel Loreena's Gift, which I loved and then her first non-fiction book Overwhelmed Writer Rescue, a resource book for writers and creative artists. Colleen is the kind of author who knows how to take all of her life experience in the writer and health field and combine it to produce books that are honest and make you see things from a realistic, and very unique way.

In Writer Get Noticed! Colleen helps you to be the best writer according to the strengths you have, and the best part is that she helps you to discover those strengths. No two writers are alike, so it makes perfect sense that creating the author platform customized to your strengths is the way to go. So how does she do this? Through exercises of self-reflection. Some of these exercises are easy, but many of them are hard because they really make you dig deep down, opening up your eyes to the hard, but not impossible, dream of getting noticed as a writer.

Essentially, a writer needs to be a business person whether they like it or not and Colleen talks about this aspect. I loved the anecdotes and experiences from other writers that Colleen included in the book, making this also an inspiring read. It's clear that Colleen is a motivational speaker because this book is actually a workbook too, and she guides you step-by-step with an easy to read, motivating writing style that feels like she's right there with you. I suggest getting the paperback copy so that you can write your thoughts right in the book because that's how it's designed.

No matter what kind of writer you are, whether an author, journalist, or blogger you can definitely benefit from the advice that Colleen dispenses in this down-to-earth but motivational resource book. Highly recommended for all writers who want to demystify the "author platform" concept and get to work creating one that rocks for them.

Author Colleen Story knows the frustrations of being a struggling writer because she once was one. She found her niche by focusing on writing and wellness, and now she's sharing how she did it in her latest book, "Writer Get Noticed! A Strengths-Based Approach to Creating a Standout Author Platform."

This very readable book is like having a conversation with Colleen as she guides the reader through various effective journaling exercises to help writers understand their motivations, identify and build on their strengths, discover their heroes, create their author theme, and build their platform. Colleen acts as part psychologist/part coach to help writers refine and realize their goals.

If you're a writer who's feeling discouraged, demoralized, and on the verge of giving up, this book is an answer to an SOS. I've tuned in to various free webinars that purport to show authors the way to achieve success, and much of the time the suggestions are too broad and the whole purpose is to sell a product that purports to be "the answer." Colleen provides common-sense, specific, and real-world advice, and it's authentic because she's lived it.

If you're willing to put in the work of reading the book and completing the exercises, Colleen will help you figure out your path to having a writing career. It may not be the one you've fantasized about, but it's certain to be a more realistic one that suits your needs, your lifestyle, your talents, and your abilities.

I’ve read Colleen’s Overwhelmed Writer and reviewed it. So I was eager to read Writer Get Noticed! and I was glad that I did. This book requires you to work through it.

The author shares from her own journey and that of other authors and also looks at relevant psychological studies that come through in the exercises.
To make it meaningful, you must do the exercises. Do them with paper and pencil in hand and watch your confidence and self-belief growing.

Colleen’s style is easy and personal and you are drawn to look within yourself and acknowledge not your weakness, but claim your strengths and work on them.

I recently completed reading and reviewing Craved about building your brand, and once again I come across this book encouraging me to build a platform. I think the Universe is sending me a loud message!

If you too are looking to work on improving your reach and building a platform, I highly recommend ‘Writer Get Noticed!’ to you.

Loved, loved, loved Colleen M. Story's book, "Writer, Get Noticed!" I wish I'd had this years ago when I first started my writing/publishing journey.

There were too many great things to list individually, but here are several key benefits this book offers:

*Focuses on your strengths, rather than weaknesses, as a writer (and person)
*Helps you use those strengths to build a platform
*Encourages authenticity and honesty, making it easier to be true to you/your brand
*Uses the "3 Brain Method" to help you strengthen your decision-making muscles (3 brains include gut, heart, and mind)
*Offers tons of suggestions, tips, and helpful advice

These are just a few of the highlights. I jotted notes as I read (see the index card peeking out in the photo?) and plan to re-read this book a few more times to remember and implement everything it offers. Highly recommend it to other writers, particularly novelists.

This book has so many great applications. There are a lot of things I would like to try based on the advice in this book for new and budding writers. Even if something in the book does not work for you there are other suggestions that will help.

This book was outstanding! I took my time reading it as I wanted to implement some of the suggested strategies as I went along. I found both the content and the exercises to be very helpful, as it helped me to start thinking in new ways about my writing.

As just one example, I have taken the author's suggestion to leverage some of my blogs into a larger piece of writing (multiple books, actually). Sometimes we get so busy doing what we do - writing - day in a day out, that we lose sight of the bigger possibilities for creating additional works that will bring in even more income. This book helped me to see all the writing I have produced thus far as a goldmine for future projects.

The author also has some excellent suggestions about working with other writers and small business owners, as well as how to better utilize social media to share one's work with a broader audience.

I highly recommend this book - for both established writers, as well as those who are just getting started.

I think Writer Get Noticed! stands out among the books written for writers. It is a do-it-yourself guide that combines journal self-analysis with practical lessons from a number of authors. Colleen has the ability to anticipate roadblocks that prevent the flow of creativity. Exploring the connections between my childhood interests and my adult craft was insightful. On several occasions, I couldn't help but exclaim, "That's me." It was obvious to me that Colleen has spent a great deal of time studying writers and the craft of writing. I am looking forward to talking about her writing quizzes with my writing group. I didn't expect a book about the craft of writing to be such a page-turner, but I was drawn into it. I wasn't just a reader: I was a participant. I have no hesitation in recommending this book.
