This is a Step 3 children's literature book that is part of the Step into Reading series. I have always been a fan of Frederick Douglass's writings and his importance in history. This book spans from birth into old age, and tells not only of his impact on America, but the struggle and heart ache that he was born into. Being separated from his mother, which, understandably, he seemed to never get over, he was one of the luckier slave children when a slaveholders wife taught him to read. He kept on reading as he grew, wherever and whenever he could. He eventually escaped slavery and wrote a book, telling the story of what it was like to be a slave, he started a newspaper and crusaded in the fight to end slavery. His is a powerful tale that everyone should know about. He overcame so much. The book is good for school age readers and has pretty watercolor illustrations that help narrate. Not all stories are cheery and happy, but this is an important part of history to now and it is laid out well for the intended audience.

This is such a good story about the abolitionist, Frederick Douglass, who was born into slavery. Secretly, he learned to read and write, through which he also learned about equality and that slavery is wrong. He became an important figure in the outlawing of slavery in the USA.
Superbly illustrated.
