The book started off a bit slow and at times slipped into (perhaps intentionally given its target audience) "corporate speak." However, it contained some excellent discussion of six different types of "retirement" from the traditional (no income-producing activity and no commitments) to others that included some form of commitment (e.g. volunteerism or ongoing learning) or income production (stepped-down work, returning to the work force after some time off, or shifting careers). I like their use of examples of how different individuals, including they and their husbands, had approached it. I felt that at times the authors exhibited a bias against traditional retirement although at other times, for example when they described that each of their husbands had opted for traditional retirement and were quite happy with it, they seemed to view it as no-less appropriate for the right person than any other "retirement" mode.

Perhaps because of where I am in my own journey, I found the later chapters, which focused on implementing one's retirement plan, the most interesting. The earlier chapters, focusing on the how to think through what one wants their retirement to look like and how to plan for that, were interesting but not as useful for me (except as a check on the thought process I had gone through). I did find their suggestion to write down one's plan, not just have it in one's head, interesting and will probably now go back and do that with mine.

For me, the bottom line is that this is not the only book that a person would want to read on planning for retirement but it does serve to complement, and sometimes fill in gaps from, what one might learn from other books on the topc.

Not Just for Retirees, but Those Seeking a Career Change

This book is useful for not only those near retirement but those contemplating a change in careers. The road map provides a helpful structure to evaluate all aspects of your Next Chapter, no matter what stage you may be at now. The personal stories of the authors and others throughout the book help you realize those thoughts, concerns and emotions you are experiencing are normal. It is also reassuring to be reminded that you do not have to have all the answers, but making choices and exploring options will provide a sense of relief, joy and motivation. I highly recommend this book and plan to buy it for friends who are at various points in their careers.

This book was a fantastic start to the new year. I loved the 5 types of paths they most take: traditional, altruist, learner, stair stepper, boomerang. I also appreciated the importance of balancing your passion, your talent, and your environment! I’m excited for the next journey!

Fantastic book! First though: this book does not focus on money. Instead, it focuses on designing your retirement life. It offers great tools and a lot of options! This is a great book for those of us who see retirement knocking on our doors within the next twenty years.
