(I used to sneak them from my parents' night tables and read them as a young boy.) Angels is a contemporary take on the old-style noir detective and won the Amazon.com Book of the Month Reader's Choice Award.
The first book of my Sci-Fi Fantasy series Tales of Nevaeh. Born to Magic, is an international Amazon genre Best Seller, Awarded the Silver medallion from the Drunken Druid International Literary Awards, and was a Kindle Review of Books finalist for Fantasy Book of the year. The final book of the series, A Dance of Light and Dark, Volume 8, was released on September 1, 2022.
Among my Mysteries & Thrillers are The Hyte Maneuver, (a Literary Guild alternate selection); The Sokova Convention, The Morrisy Manifest, Desperately Killing Suzanne, The Whistleblower’s Daughter, and Out of the Shadows.
My first non-fiction book, The Indie Writer’s Handbook, Designed for Independently Published authors, was honored with a B.R.A.G. Medallion for literary excellence, and awarded the Bronze Medal by the Florida Authors and Publishers Association.
I wrote a contemporary fiction novel, based on the Harry Chapin Song, A Better Place to Be, was named a B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree, signifying a book of the highest literary quality, and written by an independent writer; and, A Better Place to Be also received the Bronze Medal Award from Ireland's Drunken Druid International Literary Awards.

I really enjoyed this book, mainly because there was so much going on and it had so many twists and turns that it kept it interesting. I did think I knew who the killer was but enjoyed the ride to find out the answer and if I was right. The characters were believable and made you care about them, I hope there is another book.
When a play writer is killed at home the police write it off as just another burglary but for PI Storm, Scotty was like a brother to him always there for him in his hour of need and now it is Storms turn to be there for him. Unsure of the reason to kill him Storm starts with the play and soon focuses in on the backers but when a young runaway is killed by her pimp it turns the case on its head as Scotty's charity foundation had a connection with her. The only way Storm and his team know they are getting closer to something big is when the treats stop and somebody actually tries to kill them.
The narrator was good and is easy to listen to.

A great mystery that once you start reading you can’t put it down. Murder,
betrayal, backstabbing,lies, traveling all over the world. Dealings with the mobs. Both Russian and Japanese, to American. This book is a roller coaster of twists and turn, you don’t know the good guys from the bad! You start wondering if the mystery can be solved, and the killer brought to justice! This
book will keep you guessing right to the end!

Memorable and dynamic characters in an engrossing mystery perfect for the arm chair detective.
Spell-binding, emotional and tragic. Powerfully written, this book is flawless from cover to cover.

I listened to Angels In Mourning on audible
Angels in Mourning is the first novel I have listened too by author David Wind despite Mr Wind having 32 other novels out already. This is because crime/detective books wouldn't normally be my kind of books as I can normally tell early on who the murderer is, but the story sounded too intriguing and good to pass up the opportunity. I'm so glad I did give it a chance as it's opened me up to another author and I define will check out more of his work.
This is a story of murder, corruption at the highest level, intrigue and suspense as Gabriel Storm gathers information piece by piece inorder to undercover who the person is who killed his friend Scotty Granger. Along the way he discovers that the story and people's motives are complex and goes beyond Scotty Granger and his Broadway production.
At one stage I had accused everyone of the murder of Scotty Granger as they crossed Gabriel Storms path but as the story unfolded I ruled people out one by one before second guessing myself and accusing them again.I started to dream of all the other possible directions that the story could take once something vital had happened but as the story unfolds you discover that the possibilities are endless! I must admit I did have my suspicions on who the killer is halfway through the audio and even though I was right I never anticipated the twist that went with it at the end. Wow!
So far it's the longest audio book I have listened to at over 16 hours, but honestly don't let that put you off at all. The audiobook will keep you so engrossed so the time will just fly by. It did for me until the last two hours when I was nervously pacing the hallway shouting 'come on, come on, hurry up and tell me, who did it!'
The narration was flawless and Roberto Scarlato does an amazing job of keeping you hooked into the story with his pleasant, easy listening voice that brings the book to life. The characters have their own distinct voices that Mr Scarlato acts out brilliantly.
I would recommend listening to Angels In Mourning but be warned you won't be able to think of anything else until you've discovered who the murderer is. Enjoy!

Thourouly enjoyed this book. From start to finish. This is my 5th book by David Wind covering three different genres Historical, Epic Fantasy and Mystery/Thriller each and every single one of them have been great stories.
Well written, engaging, interesting and entertaining. You are sucked into the story immediately and all you can do is hold on for the ride. It's a mystery within a mystery. One new and one from the past. While I was able to solve part of the mystery before the end, there was still a part that I did not see coming at all. Great characters with a great plot. Bottom line this book is worth your time and credit.
I really liked the old time detective feel of the story.
Love the humor/sarcasm - since the Dead hit the garden, there are some who won't get the reference
I really like all the minute details that are included in the descriptions of each place in the story. It gives you the chance to visualize the scene in your mind.
Describes what it's like to drive in south Florida perfectly. The speed limit is basically just a suggestion.
Dream sequences are awkward especially in the beginning there needs to be an some indication it's a dream( I stopped my iPod and rewound to make sure I hadn't missed something).
Tone of the recording changes from chapter to chapter in the beginning. Sounds hollow sometimes, I didn’t notice it after the first few chapters.
Roberto Scarloto does a great job with the narration. Nice voice, very easy to listen to for hours on end. Smooth even pace. Perfect voice for the main character. His female voices were fantastic. Many male narrators cannot do female voices at all, that is not the case here. All around very enjoyable.

The protagonist who is an ex marine special forces astronaut jet fighter pilot police detective framed for murder of his wife with a selection of sidekicks who are all nothing short of (racial stereotype) superheroes will fight one dimensional cackling villains to solve a murder case of Andrew Lloyd Webber killed before he could finish his next pop musical but not before doing the rewrite and saving girls from a child prostitution ring, all this whilst describing in ridiculous detail the most mundane and irrelevant actions of the main character and dropping brand names like it's a James Bond film.
There is no humour, no wit - only a cringe-worthy unintentional (?) parody of a detective novel. At one point whilst the hero is solving the case by drawing on a whiteboard his FBI agent girlfriend calls him to tell him she just got chewed up by her boss for helping him speak to a local crime boss so he drives her over to his friend's dojo where they practice karate so she can beat him up and warm up for the quick trip to his place to have sex. This actually happens and it doesn't even stick out much from all off the other stupid.

Angels in Mourning takes a look the worst sort of people, those who steal a child's innocence for their own perverse pleasure. When Gabe Storm gets a call to come because his best friend Scotty Granger has been murdered Gabe vows to find the killer and get justice for Scotty. Little does Gabe realize that this case will span nearly 30 years as he hunts for a killer and will involve dealing with New York's organized crime families. Scotty's little sister was kidnapped when she was just 8 years old and Scotty has spent his adult life working to find out what happened to his sister. Along the way he has created a group that's sole purpose is to help children who are victims of the sex trade and he has managed to make a few enemies of the people who profit from destroying children's lives.
The story is fast paced and keeps you very interested. There were a few times when I found myself fussing at Gabe for being a little slow to catch on to things I had already figured out.

Overall I liked this book. The basics of the plot were rather standard but the background was unique. You don't find many murder mysteries set in the theater world. It moved along quickly and had some interesting characters.
Gabriel Storm, the detective was likable and solid for the first half. He's motivated to find the killer of his best friend despite the trouble it causes him. His assistant/partner is an interesting character with an interesting name and history.
The problem with this story is it became a little too much. Too many story lines (theater, child molestation, child trafficking), too many attempts on Storm's life and Storm had a little too many skills to be believable. All in all, it tried a little to hard to be a noir detective story.
I know this is not the author's first book but I think its his first detective story and it feels like it.

I read this when it first came out and just re-read it. I'm not a big fan of the hard boiled detective stories, but this one was very different. It was contemporary and it's main protagonist was really well done. He was hard where he was supposed to be, and warm at exactly the right times. His sidekick is-(you have to read about the sidekick) The plot was well paced and there were several spots that caught me completely off-guard. The ending, well.... it was surprising and great!

I loved this book. I felt like I was reading an old crime who-dunnit with a private-eye leading the way. The characters were wonderful and well defined, as was the plot. The end had a great twist and I look forward to reading more of his works.

I thought that this was a good read. The pace overall was good although I thought it slowed in the middle a bit. The story seemed surprisingly familiar but still entertained. A reasonable number of secrets and a few red herrings, and some very larger than life characters added to the mix.

Very different from this author's other books, it was part mystery /part suspense thriller. And it was not only very good, but a cliffhanger filled romp!
